Up until only recently I had mistakenly thought that Hawkman was awarded his own series right after the tryouts in The Brave and the Bold , where he was drawn by Joe Kubert . I was delighted to find that, instead, he had four MORE tryouts in issues 87-90 of Mystery in Space , a title I already loved. Naturally, as a Hawkman nut (and Adam Strange fan)- I had to acquire those! So here we go with the first of these issues featuring both Hawkman & Hawkwoman and Adam Strange. CREDITS: Cover art:...

This is the visual record of several families, mostly told from my maternal (Rubottom) family side, as I have a limited number of the Dobbs' family photos and ephemera in my possession. I have listed the people involved above in the TOPICS section. I have carefully curated these photos and paper ephemera for many years, knowing that eventually I would undertake the massive project of going through thousands of images to select the final edited batch that you find here. This particular 80 page giant book goes way back in my memories to when some kids next door had a copy of it and I coveted it greatly. In the late 1980s when my collecting took a huge upturn I finally got my own copy, which was later sold along with half of my collection. A few years ago I decided to buy it once again as I missed it. Even though I have a nice paperback collection of Bizarro stories, there are some in this old comic that aren't in the paperback version. Here we find two stories...

I'm back with some more Hawkman -pal and his lovely wife Shiera and some high-altitude thrills!  Sadly, this issue is a bit blurry in spots, as it seems to be from near the end of its print run and the plates were almost fully worn out, that said, it is still nice to look at, and even has one panel which is a reduction of the cover art, unusual for DC to do, most times the cover scene is re-drawn for the interior. This issue also sports TWO "Bird Facts" pages instead of the usual one...

Ahhh! Now we swing around to another one of my favorite comic series, The Doom Patrol ! I decided to start with this issue since it deals with the origin of their leader, Niles Caulder , or, " The Chief ". As an artist myself, I am a huge fan or the fellow that drew all of these books, Bruno Premiani . An amazing draftsman. The guy can draw ANYTHING well. Just wonderful. His inking is also superb and stylish. I imagine I'll do more panel by panel studies of this series in the future,...

I've been on a binge of CAEDMON records this year, and here's a particularly mad one from 1967. Here is most of the first hour of the four-hour/four record set of the complete Beowulf as read by scholar Kemp Malone , described as a "medievalist, etymologist, philologist, and specialist". Here's another episode that probably none of my listeners could make it through the whole thing. Enjoy!

I've been meaning to get around to Metamorpho , one of my childhood favorites and an odd hero indeed. I had intended to start with Metamorpho #1, the issue following this second tryout for him, but in the midst of editing the scans I found to my horror that my copy was missing the center-spread, depriving me of four pages of story. So, out came this issue instead and I started all over. Unfortunately I don't own The Brave & the Bold #57, his origin story, it is too pricey for me to get now....

Here's the last Fantastic Four " Annual " made before Jack Kirby departed from Marvel for the first time. I've been interested in Fletcher Hanks ' peculiar comic book work ever since discovering it in RAW Magazine #5 way back in 1983. Thanks to Paul Karasik 's excellent collections of his work, they can now be enjoyed in their entirety. Almost. I suspected when I bought the two volumes of Hanks' work that due to the obscurity of his work, and the many assumed names that he used, that more "lost" stories by him might turn up over the years in little-collected and less-desirable old comic...

Here we find the first issue drawn AND scripted by Neal Adams . Adams had also been doing his own color guides on his books, and in this issue he began to play around with adding color to the gutters between panels, an experiment that didn't take (correction: apparently it was DC-wide at the time-I'll look into this more...), and the engravers who had to execute it must have hated having to lay in those extra areas with long straight lines, I would imagine they used rubylith tape or something...

Here we find the second installment in the Deadman saga, cover-dated November 1967. One inspiration for this flurry of panel by panel pages in the Archive is my reading the huge two-volume set of collected Marvel monster stories by Jack Kirby from the early 1960s, which segued into the publication of the first Fantastic Four book in 1961. Many storytelling elements from the monster/fantasy/sci-fi books of that time continued to run through the early FF issues until they began to develop the formula of the book on its own. I...

Herein we find the classic 1956 adaptation of Aldous Huxley 's Brave New World , as narrated by the author, with original music composed and conducted for the radio by Bernard Herrmann . A one hour tribute to vintage sound effects records. I've included a few really old ones from 78 rpm discs, but mostly long-players from the 1950s and 60s. This was a bear to put together, the result of many downloads of old records and then hours of sifting sounds out of them and assembly. The final result features at least 75 tracks - a new record for my show! Turn It Up-! It is after all Doctored for Super-Stereo!

During my time making a weekly television show in San Francisco (1999-2007) I got into the habit of using an old TV broadcasting gimmick that I call the "Clip Show", in which elements of already-shown episodes are re-cut to make a "new" installment of a show. Whilst trolling through my archive of past radio shows recently, it occurred to me that some disparate episodes might be fun to jumble together in an unfamiliar way, thus creating a "Cut-Up" show, in an almost...

It took five+ years, but I finally got around to doing a whole episode featuring Disney records. I tried to find as many little-played and obscure ones as I could, and some personal faves. A second raid on the 78 rpm collection at the Boston Public Library 's Archive page , where I went on another long fishing expedition to bring up pieces for this show. As will happen, there was a lot of material mined for the episode that didn't make the final cut, but there are still a wealth of nice records featured. I did some click removal here and there, but not much, and compressed the heck out of most of the cuts to boost the loudness for broadcast - but not changing the overall sound of...

Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later - here I am with yet another darned show revolving around the Fabs. In this instance, I went for inspiration to a classic radio show from 1984 by the Big City Orchestra on the Over the Edge program (which can be heard in all of its glory here ), where our theme that night was entitled simply Beatles Hell , and which was later edited down into a one-hour cassette release of that name by the band. Well, here's another whacked-out episode! I had been compiling a folder of very random audio and music for the last year and as my birthday in September neared, I realized that with the addition of a bit more material, that folder could be the ingredients for a radio show.
