Six new records of the bull shark Carcharhinus leucas from five different river basins of Sumatra, Indonesia, were reported as a result of captures by artisanal and recreational fishers, including records from rivers of northern and western Sumatra for the first time. These findings may highlight the importance of Sumatran river basins for the reproduction of this threatened species in Indonesian waters. Inland records of C. leucas in Southeast Asia and in particular Indonesia are scarce but...

This work represents the first record of Glyphis glyphis for Indonesia, more precisely for the Papua Province, and information on its current distribution and abundance in the Indo-West Pacific region are scarce, probably because the species is rare and rarely sampled. Among other biological topics, providing new registers of rare non-marine elasmobranchs is an important contribution to improve the understanding of species diversity and biogeography in the Indo-West Pacific. This first...

Poster Symposium 16 Ecological impacts of neobiota, GfÖ 2006 Bremen The Ruhrgebiet (Northrhine-Westphalia, Germany) is the largest former urban-industrial area in Europe, but still the biggest urban agglomeration, now containing many abandoned areas, most of them former industrial sites (steelworks, coal mining, heaps, industrial railway sites etc.). In most fallow industrial areas primary forests are established. Basic characterizing woody species of these habitats are Betula pendula and...

A single specimen of a bull shark Carcharhinus leucas (Müller & Henle 1839) with c. 102 cm of total length was landed and photographed on 25 March 2019 in Sungai Mawai Lama, about 25 km inland, Kota Tinggi District, Johor, Peninsular Malaysia. This rare finding represents only the second record of C. leucas in inland Peninsular Malaysia. This shark was identified as C. leucas by the snout much shorter than the width of mouth and bluntly rounded, first dorsal fin triangular, rearward...

The Dryopteris affinis complex ( Dryopteridaceae ) in the Harz Mountains – identification, distribution, ecology In Germany, the Dryopteris affinis complex has its main distribution in southern parts of the country, but also occurs in the Harz Mountains, the northernmost German low mountain range. From 2008 to 2018, the authors made a series of excursions into the Harz Mountains to study this group. To correctly identify the taxa, samples were collected for flow cytometric analyses as well as...

Industrial Forest Zollverein: scientific investigations on vegetation The vegetation of the industrial forests on Zollverein is documented and discussed on a phytosociological basis. The woody plant communities are divided into two groups: the spontaneous, Betula -dominated stands and the former planted Robinia -dominated industrial forests. Within syntaxa, a finer differentiation takes place. The industrial forests have an enormous woody species richness that is due to cultural refugees from...

Unique in the whole world - endemic species in Westphalia Endemiten sind Organismen (Pflanzen, Tiere, Pilze, Bakterien u. a.), welche nur ein sehr kleines Verbreitungsgebiet aufweisen und nirgendwo anders vorkommen als in diesem meist kleinräumig ausgebildeten Areal. Flora and Vegetation of the Western Algarve (South Portugal) The Mediterranean flora accounts to the most species-rich and divers flora on a global scale and comprises more than 20,000 vascular plants (SCHULZ 1995). Portugal represents with its approximately 2,500 species (MABBERLEY & PLACITO 1993) a very special place for scholars with a keen interest in botany, particularly to those species, which are descriptive for the Mediterranean region but not abundant in Central Europe.

The Ruhr Basin today is one of the most urban-industrial influenced regions in the world. The few green sites are attracted by amounts of visitors for sports, lingering and espacialy relaxing. This leads to massive pressure on environment and ecosystems. Areas which are close to nature are rare and should get on observation and protection. Sometimes these areas show rare biotopes and can inhabit species which normaly can't exist in regions with massive urban impacts.

The considerable decline of heavy industry (coal, steel) has led to extensive structural changes in the German Ruhr, leaving behind areas which have been shaped by the profound impacts of industrial use. As long as these industrial abandoned lands are not subjected to use, they experience ecological succession. In 1992, more than 8,000 ha of such land were known in the Ruhr (Tara and Zimmermann 1997). Today the area is estimated to total approximately 10,000 ha. Depending on the local economic...

The black spleenwort (Asplenium adiantum-nigrum) is one of the fern species for which both the number of occurrences as well as the population size have increased significantly in the recent past. This phenomenon has also been observed in Westphalia and sparked a comprehensive investigation including evaluation of literature and herbaria, but also studies to re-evaluate the populations in the field. The results are presented in a detailed listing, which contains geographic data, reports on the...
