From the archives, a tribute that is worthy to the testimony that Blue note is 70 years young this year (2009).
It mustn't be understated just how important this milestone is for Jazz and for the greater good of Music as a Whole. We have tried to swerve the obvious tunes that tend to get dropped on comps like "The bestest Blue Note album in the whole wide world since the beginning of time ever part 6" you know the ones; Song for my father, Sidewinder, Cantaloup Island, Congoralre, Blue Bossa, Maiden Voyage etc and concentrated on tunes that have been instrumental to us over the last 25 odd years.
Some of the tunes on here are over 50 odd years old and IMHO still sound as fresh and exciting as they must have done back in the day... And let's not forget this fact people; This is Real Music made by Real Talent â people who mastered the art of their instruments which is sadly not seen that often in this day and age. In fact most of todays dedicated talent can be seen mainly busking on the streets to make a living â in between the odd studio session if they are really, really lucky...
Anyway, When we set out to do this comp, we wanted to do 70 tracks over 70 mins which looking back was a tad ambitious to say the least and am afraid we failed miserably on both budgets. 35 Tracks listed, 42 Used and some other little incidental bits... Plus it wouldn't be a BC mix without a lil'bit of spoken word... Here is the righteous track listing:
His Blessings: McCoy Tyner Pax: Andrew Hill Wind: Wayne Shorter How Much Does Matter Really Matter at all? Horace Silver Motto Grosso Goodbye to Childhood: Herbie Hancock Illusion: Andrew Hill Christo Redentor: Duke Pearson Inner Passion Out: Lee Morgan Succotash: Herbie Hancock Look At Teyonda (Astrological bit): William Norwood The Coming Of Gwilu: Eddie Gale Song of Will: Eddie Gale Understanding: Eddie Gale Fulton Street: Eddie Gale Walk with Thee: Eddie Gale The Gleeker: Eddie Gale Look At Teyonda: Eddie Gale The Rain: Eddie Gale NOW!: McCoy Tyner Hope: McCoy Tyner Now! Bobby Hutcherson Forbidden Land: McCoy Tyner Searchin' The Trane: Bobby Hutcherson Search for the New Nand: Lee Morgan On the Nile: Jackie McClean The Creators: Bobby Hutcherson Prayer: Solomon Ilori Sweet Pea: Wayne Shorter Appointment In Ghana: Jackie McClean The Feast: Art Blakey Buhaina Chant: Art Blakey Elephant Walk: Art Blakey The Phantom: Duke Pearson Boom, Boomp, Choomp: The Sons
This is not a definitive list just what we could pack in... A nono-second of the 100's more we just couldn't get in and really wanted to; Slow Change, Had a little talk, Walk Tall, Happy People amongst others (next Jazz on a Sunday possibly) Huuummmmm so maybe the task is 7 mixes over 7 months would be more appropriate?
