Hello: This looks amazing! But I've downloaded the link from Archives.org two times and each time it is not in English (maybe Spanish) What am I doing wrong as it says it's in English. Thanks!

This is the best copy so far of this great movie but until a remaster of the original film is released we will not see it equal to the quality of other classic movies of the same era.

Thank you so much for restoring and sharing this - it looks gorgeous. It's been out of print for years and Disney only released it to video and laserdisc.

Thank you so much for this! However, I would be interested in hearing the tool chain and hardware used. Such as software used (Neat Video?) Avisynth? Also, would be very much appreciated if the original uncompressed file was also uploaded for archival sake, I do not think the mkv is uncompressed.

Awesome work, the quality is excellent and the preservation is so important!
BTW, this restoration is totally legal as of 2021 due to the “Last Twenty Years” Exception in US Code 17 USC 108(h)!
The copyright of Song of The South expires in exactly 20 years, so the exception likely applies. Stephen M. Wolfson has a great article about this topic that can be easily googled for the curious.

The 22.2G download keeps failing after about a third of the way through the download. My desktop has plenty of room for the file, so I don't understand why it keeps failing. Help!

Thank you so much. Up until recently I've only been able to some 7th gen copies of VHS or Betamax dubs....this is great work. Disney and the world is to P.C. lately...you have done a good deed for true Disney generation.

I love Song of the South (1946)! Song of the South (1946) is one of the Golden Age of Disney Movies, along with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), Pinocchio (1940), Fantasia (1940), Dumbo (1941), and Bambi (1942).
Song of the South (1946) is one of my all time favorite movies! Also, Song of the South (1946) is one of my all time favorite Disney movies!

Subject: Please re-encode in 4:2:0 subsampling instead of 4:4:4
As the previous reviews have indicated, I tried to play this mkv in my Blu-ray player and only got sound with no picture.
This is because the Blu-ray standard does not support 4:4:4 color subsampling, but only 4:2:0 color subsampling at 8-bit.
If the orignal archiver of this 35-mm transcode of SONG OF THE SOUTH may kindly re-encode it at 1080p at 4:2:0 color subsampling using the h.264 codec (AVC), it will play in all standalone Blu-ray players.
I suggest doing this and releasing a v. 3.0 of the title.
Until then, sadly, I and many other people will not be able to play this content on our standalone players on our 1080p displays.
This simple expedient will enable us to view this film in MUCH higher quality than it has ever been seen in the last 50 years. Please consider doing this re-encode. Thank you for making this long "lost" (or, rather -- intentionally buried and forgotten) Disney title available.
My rating will increase to 5 if the re-encode in proper 4:2:0 color subsampling will be uploaded!

At the time of my first review, I was ignorant of the fact that some DVD players can play video files as well as DVS's. I have successfully transcoded Notelu's gorgeous restoration to a nearly 3 Gb Mp4 file of high quality (using Handbrake and the HQ 1080p30 setting for output format). This file will burn as a data file to a standard DVD which can then be loaded onto a DVD player, and the movie watched in high quality on your TV. Or, the file can be copied to a USB stick of suitable size and played directly from the DVD player.
I plan to obtain a large capacity USB stick , copy the original 23 Gb mkv file to it, and see if this file is readable with my DVD player. It should be. My DVD player is a recent model Samsung Blu ray DVD player. I cannot say that this version by Notelu is better that the BBC version available on this site as an .iso file, but it is beautifully done and worth the trouble to make it playable on your big screen TV.
Update:
I copied the original mkv file to a 32 Gb USB drive formatted with NTSF, inserted the drive into my Samsung Blu ray DVD player, selected the drive as video input, and attempted to play the file. It did not work. All I got was lousy sound and a static screen of vertical colored lines. The best I have been able to do with this setup is to transcode the original 23 Gb mkv file with Handbrake, using the superHQ1080p30 setting which results in a 7 Gb plus file, which then transfers to an NTSF-formatted USB drive, which when inserted into the Samsung Blu ray DVD player, allows playback on the big screen in superb color and resolution. Thanks again to Notelu for a great job! If anyone else has suggestions on playing back the mkv file on the big screen, please share.

The film restoration is stunning. Thank you. The extras are fun but is the ERNEST GOES TO SPLASH MOUNTAIN supposed to be audio only? I saw no image.

Hi Notelu,
I was able to download the v2 of the mkv file. Have you been able to take the mkv file and create a iso or Blu-ray burnable folder successfully? I have tried using the two (free) packages out there, tsmuxer and the other one slips my mind. I get errors with both and the resulting iso will not work once the disc is burned.
Any help would be great!
Thanks again for your hard work and devotion to this classic!

Congratulations e thank you very much for share this amazing work! I just want to observ that the European Portuguese language is actually in Brazillian Portuguese. During many years Portugal used the Brazillian language for your viewrs and in home video releases. In Brazil we have two different versions of the Brazillian language. That yours was the version used here only on the VHS release. The second one is exclusive for TV broadcast.
