During WWII the government produced and distributed 78 RPM "Victory Discs," or V-Discs, to U.S. troops all over the world. The records were to be destroyed after the war but many of them survived. :)
A lot of the V-Disc material was taken from radio programs like Command Performance; you can find out more in the book V-Discs: A History and Discography by Richard Sears.
