On a virus Wednesday in
00:00:01
a statement his office says he's
without severe symptoms feels
00:00:04
a little sick and is in quarantine at home
Meanwhile hundreds of millions worldwide
00:00:09
are just in to unprecedented measures to
battle the pandemic this as Johns Hopkins
00:00:14
University releases new figures saying more
than 200000 people worldwide have been
00:00:19
infected and more than
8000 killed borders as
00:00:23
a Libya Chan has more than the enemy is
00:00:25
a virus and now we have to do our most
to protect our people and to protect our
00:00:31
economies European Commission president
of underlying can found that the e.u.
00:00:37
Would be closing off its external borders
to cut the spread of coronavirus German
00:00:42
Chancellor Angela Merkel said the borders
would be shut with immediate effect as
00:00:46
other nations such as sponsor follow
suit bring in stringent restrictions on
00:00:51
people's movement as the e.u.
00:00:54
Scramble to find
00:00:54
a coherent response to the outbreak many
nation states imposed their own border
00:00:59
checks in what is normally a certain of
control free travel that's workers as
00:01:03
a Livia Chan u.s.
00:01:05
President Donald Trump moved Wednesday to
manage dual health and economic crises
00:01:09
announcing he'll invoke
00:01:10
a federal provision allowing the government
to marshal the private sector in
00:01:14
response to the coronavirus pandemic speaking
at the White House Mr Trump outlined
00:01:19
a number of steps he's taking including
paying out of work Americans the value of
00:01:23
the checks that would be sent will be
determined later we'll look at the different
00:01:26
numbers we're looking at timing that
would be different splitting the time
00:01:31
splitting the payments we're looking at
00:01:32
a lot of different things hasn't been
determined yet but it will shortly be
00:01:36
determined and people want to go big as
opposed everybody seems to want to go big
00:01:40
the president also said he will expand
the nation's testing capacity and deploy
00:01:45
a naval hospital ship to New
York City this is a news u.s.
00:01:49
Stocks plunged Wednesday trading amid
investor uncertainty over the government's
00:01:54
response to the coronavirus stock trader
Matthew Chance luck says right now this is
00:01:59
a health issue. Not
00:02:00
a financial one that the Fed or trump
administration moves can help when the case
00:02:04
numbers are going to jump and if they
jump incrementally even with social
00:02:09
distancing and shelter in place in effect
the numbers could increase and that's
00:02:14
going to lead to panic and that's what we
seem to have right now the United States
00:02:18
and Canada have agreed to temporarily close
their shared border to non-essential
00:02:22
travel due to the coronavirus
at pandemic a.p.
00:02:26
Correspondent Shelley Adler reports after
president cheated about in the morning he
00:02:30
spoke about the new restrictions at
00:02:33
a White House news conference it's non-essential
crossings it won't affect trade at
00:02:37
all and it was just something we thought
would be good for both countries Canadian
00:02:42
prime minister Justin Trudeau on c.t.v.
00:02:45
Essential travel will continue our governments
recognize that it is critical that
00:02:50
we preserve supply chains between both
countries chatted there relies on the u.s.
00:02:55
For 75 percent of its exports I'm showing
after the Olympic Games in Tokyo are
00:03:01
still 4 months away as the International
Olympic Committee works on preparations in
00:03:05
line with protecting athletes from the
coronavirus the committee had what it calls
00:03:10
a constructive conference call Wednesday
with 220 athletes Representatives the
00:03:15
i.o.c.
00:03:15
President said they heard the concerns and
we will address the section of the road
00:03:22
keep acting in
00:03:23
a responsible way in the interest off of
the athletes China is withdrawing the
00:03:30
press credentials of American
journalists at 3 u.s.
00:03:33
Newspapers The New York Times Wall Street
Journal and Washington Post Reuters as
00:03:37
ever McCarthy reports the move is
likely to intensify the already frosty
00:03:42
relationship between the world's top
2 economies according to the Foreign
00:03:46
Correspondents Club of China which said
it deploys China's decision the expulsion
00:03:51
is expected to affect at least 13 journalists
China has defended its decision which
00:03:57
will even bar reporters from working
in Hong Kong. Wrong and says it was
00:04:01
a retaliation against u.s.
00:04:03
Restrictions on Chinese journalists
that's what he says m.r.
00:04:06
McCarthy the most powerful
earthquake to hit the u.s.
00:04:10
State of Utah in 28 years knocked out
00:04:13
a coronavirus hotline shut down the capital
cities airport for much of the day and
00:04:18
forced the evacuation of an oil refinery
Wednesday officials say there were no
00:04:23
immediate reports of deaths or injuries
from the 5.7 magnitude quake for more on

00:04:35
News dot com I'm Diane
Roberts the only news.
00:04:51
It's Thursday March
19th and this is v.o.a.
00:04:55
Asia I'm Deborah are beginning
Washington today we're broadcasting from
00:05:00
a alternative situation and turn to
00:05:03
a location that's in part because in
large measure because of the coronavirus
00:05:10
buildings are emptying out and people are
finding different ways of working well
00:05:16
socially distancing that's what I'm doing
so the audio may not be exactly what
00:05:21
you're used to don't worry we're going to
work on all of that and make it better in
00:05:28
the coming days. One thing
that we're going to
00:05:35
continue to do and that we won't stop is
bringing you the very best information
00:05:40
that we can the most accurate and the
most timely news and information now
00:05:47
that 6 material that our journalists at
Voice of America are producing around the
00:05:53
world is that material from our sister
broadcasters such as our f.a. Or r.f.e.
00:06:00
R.l.
00:06:01
As well as material from established
organizations like the Associated Press and
00:06:08
Reuters So we're culling through the very
best information that we can and this is
00:06:15
a great opportunity for me to mention
that right on our home page for v.o.a.
00:06:20
News dot com There is
00:06:22
a big red banner link that says
corona virus update and you can
00:06:29
be assured that if you go there if you
click on that you are going to get the
00:06:34
latest news and information that we
have and that we have confidence
00:06:41
in its accuracy and its truthfulness
So again we thought it today might be
00:06:48
a good chance. It's to
revisit where we are there's
00:06:53
a lot of stories obviously today's program
is pretty much mostly going to be about
00:06:58
coronavirus it's not always going to be
the case we're going to return to airing
00:07:03
features and all kinds of you know profiles
of life in America and that sort of
00:07:08
thing in the coming days and weeks ahead
these are extraordinary circumstances and
00:07:15
we are doing our best to make sure that you
are being served now we thought we just
00:07:21
would begin today with
taking a very quick overview
00:07:25
a snapshot as it were as to where we are
right now don't glow Beloit Now many of
00:07:31
you know that the corona virus appears
to have originated in who Bay province
00:07:38
in China that certainly for
00:07:40
a long time where the epicenter was maybe
not so much anymore at least according to
00:07:45
the w.h.o.
00:07:47
Currently China is reporting
81058 confirmed cases of Corona
00:07:54
virus not covert 1000 which is the disease
and they are also reporting over 3200
00:08:01
deaths from covert 19 so
they're trying to get
00:08:05
a handle on that they're
doing the best they can it's
00:08:09
a very big country and so they're trying
to keep things under control as much as
00:08:14
possible 2nd on the list is Italy you've
probably heard that said the w.h.o.
00:08:21
The World Health Organization has alerted
people that Europe is actually kind of
00:08:27
becoming the hot spot for this Fred of
coronavirus and Italy is certainly one
00:08:33
of those places Italy right now
is reporting 31506 confirmed
00:08:40
cases and that's a tremendous number
of cases for a country with such
00:08:45
a relatively small population there
also reporting. Over $2500.00 deaths so
00:08:51
far health experts there are saying
they are not at the end of it that they
00:08:57
continue to expect things to go from bad
to worse the hospital systems there are
00:09:03
being overtaxed So we will keep our eye on
what happens in Italy very closely next
00:09:10
on the list to run you've no
doubt heard that Iran has been
00:09:15
a hot spot of its own in some ways there
over 16000 cases that have been reported
00:09:22
in Iran alone with 988
deaths again staggeringly
00:09:29
large numbers now some Iranian officials
recently told the press that they fear
00:09:35
that once this is all said and done that
as many as 1000000 Iranians might die from
00:09:42
code 900 now we haven't seen those numbers
confirmed anywhere else by any other
00:09:49
health organization we're just reporting
that that's what the government is saying
00:09:54
Spain is coming in next with
11748 confirmed cases 533
00:10:01
deaths Germany not doing
so much better but
00:10:05
a little bit better 1257
cases confirmed and 24
00:10:12
deaths which is an encouraging number
and of course South Korea which was for
00:10:17
a long time sort of the hot spot outside
of who Bay is reporting now 8320
00:10:24
cases and 81 deaths it's really
00:10:28
a testament to how hard they have been
working in South Korea to try and limit the
00:10:34
spread of corona virus and to treat
those who are sick with covert 19
00:10:41
and other many other nations that follow
just simply too many to list this is
00:10:47
a virus that is. Clearly touching every
continent now and we're watching to
00:10:53
see it's going to spread in different ways
and different paths in different spots
00:10:59
and that's in part because of local
situations and in part because of how
00:11:03
governments respond so we're going to keep
our eye on those numbers those numbers
00:11:08
will go up and people should simply prepare
for that social distancing and maybe
00:11:14
a big help certainly washing hands trying
to get as much sleep as possible trying
00:11:20
to reduce stress eating healthily as possible
all of these things are important but
00:11:26
there are no guarantee that anybody in
particular is not going to catch the virus
00:11:32
again if you're listening to v.o.a.
00:11:34
Asia.

00:12:12

00:12:14
a News dot com website. Now
00:12:33
leading off our section on the coronavirus
is this most recent story this comes to
00:12:39
us from Steve Herman Steve is our senior
White House correspondent and let me just
00:12:46
read
00:12:46
a little bit to you if I may be. Federal
government is looking at quickly sending
00:12:52
money directly to Americans to help soften
the economic blow from the coronavirus
00:12:57
pandemic quote I think we're going to do
something that gets money as quickly as
00:13:02
possible to Americans President Trump
told White House reporters on Tuesday
00:13:08
treasury secretary Steve Nugent said the
president has instructed me we have to do
00:13:14
this now we're looking at sending checks
to Americans immediately and I mean now in
00:13:20
the next 2 weeks the Trump administration
is seeking to get Congress to approve an
00:13:27
infusion of as much as $850000000000.00
into the economy that includes
00:13:33
$250000000000.00 for small business loans
00:13:37
a 50 dollars 1000000000 dollar package
to bail out nation's airlines as part
00:13:44
of an emergency stimulus package that should
be noted that said Not everywhere but
00:13:50
increasingly and more and more places
you're seeing it in some states such as
00:13:55
Maryland you're seeing it in some cities
such as San Francisco and even here in
00:14:00
Washington d.c.
00:14:02
Various government officials have imposed
00:14:05
a social distancing bands if you or they
come under a variety of names is it
00:14:10
a lockdown is it a quarantine is it
00:14:13
a ban and what is it exactly but what
it usually entails is that places where
00:14:20
people gather restaurants
bars movie theaters jams even
00:14:27
libraries some other kinds of public
gathering places are being closed and
00:14:34
they're being closed under order of the
got government the whole idea here is to
00:14:39
limit individuals exposure to other
individuals because that's exactly
00:14:46
how this respiratory virus. This is
transmitted it's transmitted through the air
00:14:52
and it passes individual to individual
so what's happening is many
00:14:59
people many many hundreds of thousands of
people are finding themselves at least
00:15:05
temporarily without work for
00:15:07
a loaded questioning what's going to happen
and that is creating enormous financial
00:15:14
strain on the system.

00:15:44
States take aggressive action
against coronavirus this by v.o.a.
00:15:51
As Cho she writes she begins with this
quote stay home stay safe stay home
00:15:57
has
00:15:58
a cave in Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolfe
urged his residents while announcing his
00:16:03
shutdown order at least 13 states including
California Connecticut Delaware issued
00:16:10
executive orders this week to close bars
and restaurants limiting their service to
00:16:16
carry out and delivery or hers only add
the District of Columbia to that with
00:16:21
thousands of new coronavirus cases across
the United States the numbers took
00:16:26
a precipitous jump today is Thursday
they just in the last not even
00:16:31
a week since last Friday in the
United States they really took
00:16:36
a precipitous jump so that Scott
people's attention with thousands of new
00:16:40
coronavirus cases across the United
States states are implementing aggressive
00:16:46
actions to stop the rapid spread of. Virus
some governors gave clear warnings to
00:16:52
people who aren't heeding them here's
00:16:54
a quote I would say to them weeks from now
months from now when one of those party
00:16:59
goers one of those people that they
defied the order to have into their
00:17:04
establishment become sick somebody perhaps
that might die they should know that
00:17:10
they are responsible for that and they
should not hold these parties that was
00:17:17
Illinois governor j.b.
00:17:18
Pritzker who speaking at
00:17:20
a news conference on Monday California
Florida Georgia Maine and Tennessee declared
00:17:26
states of emergency in New Jersey set
00:17:29
a statewide curfew from 8 pm
to 5 pm of course there's also
00:17:34
a national state of emergency that was
announced last week by President Trump that
00:17:40
doesn't number of things to release is some
decent amount of federal monies to get
00:17:46
help where it's needed particularly to
people who are on the front lines the
00:17:51
hospital staff who are running low of
of critical material be they masks
00:17:58
or surgical gloves or gowns or respirators
or you know that kind of ventilators
00:18:04
these things are in short supply and there
is worry that this may continue for some
00:18:11
time anecdotally part of these
shutdowns for example Washington d.c.
00:18:17
I live almost right at the corner of
00:18:19
a very busy intersection always lively
always something going on here in Washington
00:18:25
d.c.
00:18:26
It is totally empty there are no pedestrians
there is no traffic except for maybe
00:18:33
emergency vehicles it's eerie
and of course there are some
00:18:40
health professionals in the United States
and elsewhere who are cautioning that
00:18:46
these social distancing. Process
A's plans actions that we are
00:18:53
taking that limit our exposure to other
people that largely keep people in their
00:18:59
house you know safe from the virus presumably
may continue for some time but this
00:19:05
probably isn't going to be
00:19:07
a couple weeks this may be several months
so we're going to have to keep our eyes
00:19:12
on that again if you are

00:20:18
w.h.o.
00:20:19
Urges nations to enact tougher measures
to combat the corona virus and she writes
00:20:24
The World Health Organization is
urging governments to implement
00:20:28
a comprehensive aggressive approach
in tackling covert 19 to slow down
00:20:35
the rapidly increasing number of cases and
deaths from this now dangerous new virus
00:20:42
in Europe and in other parts of the world
again Europe is seen by many now it's as
00:20:47
a real hotspot. The largest number of cases
and deaths from Corona virus are still
00:20:52
being reported in from the Western Pacific
region which includes China however
00:20:58
Europe is running a close 2nd and now has
00:21:02
a larger cumulative number of confirmed
infections and deaths than all other
00:21:08
regions combined the w.h.o.
00:21:10
Says it's difficult to nail down any one
factor or particular scenario behind this
00:21:17
surge of cases in Europe that we do a Joe
spokesman Christian Linamar told v.o.a.
00:21:23
That his agency has been warning for weeks
that this novel virus will grab hold and
00:21:30
continue to spread with relentless speed
around the world this is some tough
00:21:35
language quote at the
same time when you have
00:21:38
a large spike of cases either because
they have been undetected for
00:21:42
a while or because of an
unfortunate incident were
00:21:45
a large group of people gets infected at
any one time you reach capacity problems
00:21:51
and this is what many Your pm countries
seem to be struggling with right now it's
00:21:58
certainly something that Italy and Spain
are struggling with German Chancellor
00:22:03
Angela Merkel is set to make
00:22:06
a televised address fairly shortly this
will be her 1st televised address ever
00:22:13
since serving 4 years in
the role of Chancellor.

00:22:46
This is
00:22:46
a Reuters story bulge. Supermarket chain
moves to protect older people from Corona
00:22:53
virus now you may have heard that some
doctors are speculating that it appears that
00:22:59
older people or people who are immunocompromised
that means maybe they have some
00:23:05
sort of underlying conditions such as
chronic heart problems diabetes h.i.v.
00:23:12
Those kinds of if you do suppressive
conditions that they may be at greater risk
00:23:19
for catching the corona virus and developing
covert 19 so writers rights in this
00:23:26
story is here that Belgian supermarket
chain highs has moved to protect its
00:23:31
customers over 65 years of age the age
group most at risk from the Corona virus
00:23:37
they write by reserving the 1st hour after
it shops open only for elderly shoppers
00:23:44
that's interesting the decision has
00:23:46
a potted since Tuesday and more than 700
of the company's shops in Belgium as well
00:23:52
as its
00:23:52
a stop and shop chain in the United States
quote I came here to stop for some groceries
00:23:59
to have an effect home so I don't run out
or run around too much because I think
00:24:03
it's too dangerous said all
3 a 71 year old wearing
00:24:09
a mask over his nose and his mouth as he
told Reuters as he was preparing to leave
00:24:15
the shop despite the especially reserved
time there was still lines of elderly
00:24:20
shoppers waiting to enter shops on Wednesday
because of the restriction that only
00:24:25
150 people can in
00:24:28
a Delhaize supermarket at any given time
be admitted this again to limit the
00:24:34
infection this raises an interesting point
you may have seen some places where
00:24:38
people are lining up queuing up long lines
kind of crowding together to get into
00:24:44
a certain place whether
it's a supermarket or
00:24:47
a bank or something. Like that I will
simply repeat what the public health
00:24:52
professionals are repeating which is if
we're supposed to be practicing social
00:24:58
distancing that probably the worst thing
that we can be doing is packing ourselves
00:25:03
together in compact little groups where
we're all basically breathing on top of
00:25:09
each other that can be
00:25:11
a perfect the factor for virus transmission
so we should try to avoid those
00:25:18
situations as much as we can.

00:26:23
Stocks plunged in early trading Wednesday
amid investor uncertainty over the
00:26:29
government's response to the coronavirus
setting the stage for what may be another
00:26:34
highly volatile day of trading it has been
volatile so far we can tell you that the
00:26:40
Dow Jones Industrial
Average and the s. And p.
00:26:43
500 are were more than 5 percent lower
here shortly after the markets. Open while
00:26:49
the Nasdaq composite was down more than 4
percent and investors in the financial
00:26:55
markets are looking for some form of
call me and something to ease their
00:27:01
concerns about where things may be heading
around the world not just in the United
00:27:07
States but but around the world
this story from Reuters u.s.
00:27:11
Health officials on Wednesday appealed
to use to do their part by heating
00:27:16
guidelines on self isolation to blunt the
corona virus outbreak and warned that the
00:27:23
White House may have to extend its
action plan if 15 days proves
00:27:29
insufficient quote 15 days is likely not
going to be enough to get us all the way
00:27:35
through but we really need to lean into
it now so we can bend the curve in 15
00:27:41
days and at that point we'll
reassess this a quote from u.s.
00:27:46
Surgeon general drone
Adams who is speaking on
00:27:49
a national television network today the
phrase you may have heard bending the curve
00:27:56
is in fact what public health officials
are hoping to see which is rather than
00:28:01
seeing spikes of cases and of deaths
like we're seeing in Italy where there
00:28:08
is work it puts such
00:28:09
a condensed demand on medical supplies
it needs what they're hoping to do
00:28:16
is bend that curve really kind of tried
flat out that doesn't mean people aren't
00:28:22
going to get infected that doesn't mean
people aren't going to get sick but it's
00:28:26
not going to happen you know all of
00:28:28
a sudden bang kind of way I deal it and
it will be flattened out and health
00:28:34
professionals will be able to much better
assess and deal with and treat patients
00:28:41
as their needs come by well
that is a look at just
00:28:45
a few of the stories that are making headlines
right. Now of course there are many
00:28:50
many more and you can find those many many
more at our website that we don't we die

The. Welcome to learning English
00:29:54
a daily 30 minute program from the
Voice of America. Jonathan Evans this
00:30:01
program is aimed at English
learners so we speak
00:30:04
a little slower and we use words and phrases
especially written for people learning
00:30:10
English. We also explain words
00:30:17
and language rules all while bringing you
stories and information from around the
00:30:23
world. Today on the program you will
hear stories from Ashley Thompson and
00:30:30
and ball later Steve Amber will present
our American history series The
00:30:37
Making of
00:30:38
a nation but 1st here is
Ashley Thompson. With
00:30:45
schools shutting down and the ways of
daily life changing children are hearing
00:30:52
more about the new coronavirus
they may not fully understand it
00:30:58
or know how seriously to take
it but their lives are affected
00:31:05
many parents are trying to decide how to
talk with their children about the virus
00:31:12
and of the outbreak Some say they
are checking in each day to see how
00:31:19
their children are doing but others worry
that talking too much about it could make
00:31:26
their children more nervous and fearful in
00:31:30
a call pony is the mother of 10
year old Clara and 12 year old Jane
00:31:37
the family lives in Audubon
New Jersey she said We talk
00:31:43
a lot about it I watch the news every
morning and they're always watching it too
00:31:50
both girls said they have talked about the
virus at school Jane said her teachers
00:31:56
have discussed it during science
lessons I'm not really as scared of it
00:32:03
it's still not even that many people
getting sick here Jane said one of my
00:32:10
friends is really scared of it but she's
honestly really scared of all diseases
00:32:17
back Young said she has decided to limit
the conversations with her 4 children they
00:32:24
are ages 810-1215 the family lives in Fort
00:32:31
Mill South Carolina she said she does
not want them to be afraid of getting
00:32:37
sick because kids get sick pretty
often and she does not want them
00:32:44
to worry about dying. The
new corona virus causes
00:32:49
a disease called Kovac 19 for
most people including children
00:32:56
it results in only mild or
moderate sickness such as
00:33:02
a temperature and cough for others
especially older adults and people
00:33:08
with existing health problems it can
cause more severe illness including
00:33:15
pneumonia which facts
00:33:17
a person's ability to breathe most
people recover the World Health
00:33:23
Organization says that people with minor
sickness recover in about 2 weeks
00:33:31
those with
00:33:31
a more serious case may take 3 to 6
weeks to recover child psychology
00:33:38
experts advise parents and others
to be calm and positive when
00:33:45
discussing the issue with young people they
suggest centering discussions on active
00:33:52
steps one can take They also suggested
doing research in order to answer
00:33:58
children's questions
truthfully Dr Jamie Howard is
00:34:04
a psychologist at the nonprofit Child
Mind Institute she said it is important
00:34:11
to reassure children ask them if they
have questions and tell them how they can
00:34:18
stay safe the Institute and the u.s.
00:34:22
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
offer suggestions on talking with
00:34:28
children some teachers and sports
coaches are working to stop the
00:34:34
idea that the virus is tied to any
group or race the new coronavirus
00:34:41
1st appeared in China. Some American
adults are staying away from Chinese
00:34:48
restaurants and businesses out of
fear that they may get the virus
00:34:54
Seattle public schools in the state of
Washington wrote on its website that
00:35:00
misinformation has led to fear and
anger the school district's leaders
00:35:07
urged students to combat racism and
bias we are aware of reports that
00:35:13
some of our Asian students have been
targeted and discriminated against in
00:35:19
connection to coded 19 their school
leaders wrote this is unacceptable
00:35:27
parents should explain that measures such
as wearing covers over your mouth and
00:35:33
nose and closing schools are
preventative and temporary Dr Howard
00:35:40
said she urges parents to follow
what the television personality Mr
00:35:46
Rogers used to say look to the
helpers to see what doctors
00:35:53
teachers parents and scientists
are doing to keep them safe I'm
00:35:59
Ashley Thompson.
00:36:47
Wasim
00:36:47
a con stopped attending school
6 years ago she has yet to
00:36:54
complete her studies the 19 year
old is not an exception she
00:37:01
is like many other young women in new
where she lives in northern India
00:37:08
only about 30 percent of the women
there can read and write that is
00:37:15
about half the national
average was Sima Khan
00:37:21
left school because she had to do housework
and help her mother with younger
00:37:27
brothers and sisters she said and
there was no middle school in her
00:37:34
community at the same time
boys living in pet Piqua
00:37:41
in hard Yana State walk to the nearest
high school about 4 kilometers
00:37:47
away. Yet girls are not permitted
to leave the small village.
00:37:55
Many of the women work in fields or
care for farm animals young girls got
00:38:02
water while children play men often
sit outside their homes in the
00:38:08
sun after a cold winter
00:38:12
a group of young women from this mostly
Muslim community made it to college by
00:38:17
overcoming prejudices against women
now they are working to get more
00:38:24
girls into school every Sunday
they spread out in and other
00:38:30
villages to talk to people about why they
should let their daughters study the
00:38:37
young women persuaded Wassim cons mother
to keep her younger daughter at school
00:38:43
they ease her concerns about the
dollar ease the money or goods that
00:38:49
a woman's family must give to her
husband's family when they marry she
00:38:55
fears that educated girls will want
to marry educated men who will demand
00:39:01
a bigger dowry this is difficult for
many poor families who see no reason to
00:39:08
educate girls all rush to knit is
00:39:12
a postgraduate student studying
history she says her college
00:39:18
education has given her the strength
to fight the dowry tradition
00:39:25
I will only marry into
00:39:27
a family which does not demand
dowry she said however well to do
00:39:34
they may be. They young women
tell Khan that she can
00:39:40
return to school as
00:39:43
a girl her goal had been to join
India's police force she does not know
00:39:50
if she can go back but she says she
will do whatever she can to make
00:39:57
sure her sister does not leave
school I loved my classes she said
00:40:04
but I was helpless
00:40:07
a nonprofit organization called the selfie
with daughter foundation is leading the
00:40:13
campaign to empower and educate
women in these villages its aim is
00:40:20
to bring change by publicizing the success
stories of girls who came from the
00:40:25
villages and now serve as role
models for other families is one
00:40:32
a cause and began her campaign by persuading
her extended family to educate their
00:40:38
daughters she tells these women that
educated girls could help the villages
00:40:45
in some areas Lemmon are not permitted to
enter act with male lawyers be taught by
00:40:52
male teachers or get treated by
male doctors. And is training for
00:40:59
a job in health care as
a nurse when she was
00:41:03
a teenager she became terribly
sick but her treatment was
00:41:08
a problem her parents could not read and
medical centers in the area were very
00:41:15
poor quality it made her decide
to get her own education
00:41:23
Khan said she wants to bring medical
aid to women in the area this is
00:41:29
a Goal her father urged her to go for
even selling belongings to pay for her
00:41:36
nursing school. They don't want
to educate their daughters but
00:41:43
if women are ill they want
00:41:46
a lady doctor how will that happen
Khan said another girl in the
00:41:53
campaign Shahnaz Bano wants to teach in
00:41:58
a local school she said I tell them that
if your daughters don't attend schools
00:42:05
how will they find female teachers it is
00:42:10
a message the young women repeat as they
go from house to house they point out how
00:42:17
they had to fight with their families to
get the right to study sometimes even
00:42:24
when parents agree to let them
study others in the village raised
00:42:30
objections most boys who complete
college move away to look
00:42:37
for better jobs outside the villages
but the girls hope to use their skills
00:42:44
in education in the community
on German Islam is studying law
00:42:51
she wants to provide free legal aid to
women I don't want to do that for men she
00:42:58
adds but her bigger goal is to change
minds here men think that women
00:43:05
are only meant to do housework and give
birth to children Islam said we have to
00:43:11
change this thinking if we have
00:43:14
a quality under the law how can society
have this gender discrimination
00:43:22
the campaign is having success and flew
in saying some women they do most of the
00:43:28
work both at home and in the
fields. And is 30 years old
00:43:35
she is determined to educate her 3 daughters
she wants to make sure they can escape
00:43:41
her life story of hard backbreaking
work all day long she works with the
00:43:47
animals finds firewood cleans
cooks and washes dishes she said
00:43:55
if I had studied I would have been
saved from this. Time Jonathan

00:45:28
Welcome to the making of a nation
American history in the oh
00:45:34
a special English I'm Steve embers.
The United States entered the 2nd
00:45:41
World War In December of 1941 Europe
had already been at war since
00:45:48
1939 but the United States did not enter
00:45:52
a World War 2 until Japanese forces at
tack the American naval base at Pearl
00:45:59
Harbor Hawaii. The attack was
00:46:05
a surprise but American military and political
leaders had believed that the United
00:46:12
States sooner or later would be pulled into
the fighting and they began to prepare
00:46:18
for war. President Franklin Roosevelt
had been assistant secretary of the
00:46:25
Navy under President Woodrow Wilson
during World War one he remembered how
00:46:31
American troops were not ready if up that
war now that he was President Roosevelt
00:46:38
wanted to be sure that the United States
would be ready when it had to fight
00:46:44
throughout 1941 Roosevelt urged
American industries to produce more
00:46:51
weapons and other military supplies the
as damaged new government agencies
00:46:58
to work with industry to increase arms
production. Some business leaders
00:47:04
resisted Roosevelt's efforts they found
there was no need to produce more arms
00:47:10
while the United States was still at
peace but many others cooperated and by
00:47:17
the time. Pam attacked Pearl Harbor the
American economy was producing millions of
00:47:24
guns and other weapons still
this was not enough to fight
00:47:29
a war after the Japanese attack Roosevelt
increased his demands on American
00:47:36
industry he called 460000 war planes 45000
00:47:43
tanks and 20000 anti aircraft
guns and he wanted all these
00:47:49
within one year. A month after
the Pearl Harbor raid Roosevelt
00:47:56
organized the special committee to direct
military production he created another
00:48:03
group to help companies find men
and women for defense work and he
00:48:09
established
00:48:10
a new office where the nation's best
scientists and engineers could work together
00:48:17
to design new weapons these new
government organizations faced several
00:48:24
problems sometimes factories produced
too much of one product and not
00:48:30
enough of another sometimes tools
broke and some business owners
00:48:37
refused to accept government orders but
the weapons were produced and American
00:48:43
troops soon have but guns
and supplies they need.
00:48:54
The federal government had to quickly
expand its own workforce to meet war needs
00:49:01
federal spending increased from
$60000000000.00 in 1940 to
00:49:07
$89000000000.00 in 1944
that was 15 times as much
00:49:14
spending in just 5 years Roosevelt.
Had to take strong steps to get the
00:49:21
money if for all this spending he put limits
on wages he increased income taxes to
00:49:28
as much as 94 percent on potions
of incomes over 200000 dollars
00:49:35
and he asked the American people to lend
money to the federal government the people
00:49:41
answered by purchasing almost 100000000000
dollars in war bonds the great
00:49:48
injuries.
00:50:13
As wanted somebody else's not their
own federal officials had to
00:50:20
work hard to keep prices and supplies
under control they restricted how much
00:50:27
meat fuel and other goods people
could buy. The friends controlled
00:50:33
program generally worked its success kept
the American economy strong to support
00:50:40
the troops fighting in Europe and the Asia.
One reason these strong economic steps
00:50:47
worked was because most of the get American
people fully supported the war effort
00:50:53
talk to talk oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
oh oh oh oh oh oh. 00000000 but I think
00:51:01
she's supposed to send the file and
she's making this to be part of
00:51:06
a keep up with. The keep shuffle out
of Sam but sitting up there on the
00:51:13
pistol that little bit can
do that in a minute and
00:51:16
a total. Of them will get out
of the thing Charlie the movie.
00:51:24
Both in public don't. Want to know that I
am on the living machine when they get
00:51:30
the attention she was called as
00:51:33
a gift to be there something you might
improve up hoping. That you can
00:51:40
look at photographs of people from those
times and see in their faces how strongly
00:51:46
they felt. In one picture from
the state of North Carolina
00:51:52
a group of men there standing in front
of old rubber tires they are planning to
00:51:58
give the tires to the army to be fixed
and used for military vehicles. Another
00:52:05
photo shows a woman visiting
a hospital she is singing to
00:52:10
a soldier to lift his spirits still
another photo shows a man who owns
00:52:17
a small food store he is placing
the signs on meat and cans of food
00:52:24
to tell people how much they are allowed
to buy. You can also get an idea
00:52:31
about the feelings of the times by the
names of some of the popular songs during
00:52:37
World War 2. Come back there.
00:52:46
Well I. Was.
00:52:54
Alone. With the Day. While I.
00:53:01
Was. In
00:53:08
addition to Rosie the Riveter there
were songs like Praise the Lord m.
00:53:13
As for the ammunition. One of the most
hopeful songs was this was recorded by
00:53:20
Britain's beer on the. Lawn I.
00:53:28
Was on was. Not gone dump
00:53:35
on my good. Long long walk.
00:53:43
And the rain all lonely and
drawl I'm watching. From
00:53:50
the. Laundry. To the
00:53:57
bomb. Bomb bomb bomb.
00:54:06
Bomb bomb. Bomb bomb bomb.
00:54:16
And eventually. Bomb the lawn.
00:54:26
When we. Saw
00:54:29
a new life when he really.
Honestly we saw in the.
00:54:40
Dawn again. Lawyer.
00:54:50
Not all Americans supported the war
00:54:53
a small number refused to fight because
of religious or moral beliefs they were
00:55:00
known as conscientious objectors and some
Americans supported at all for Hitler
00:55:07
and other fascists but almost everyone
else wanted to win the war quickly
00:55:14
and return to
00:55:15
a normal life. Many Japanese
Americans served with honor in
00:55:22
the United States armed forces but many
Americans were suspicious of anyone whose
00:55:29
family had come from Japan. They refused
to trust even Japanese American
00:55:36
families who had lived in the
United States for more than
00:55:40
a century. Many banks refused to
lend money to Japanese Americans
00:55:47
many stores would not sell to them.
The federal government relocated
00:55:54
thousands of Japanese Americans in
California and other states into
00:56:00
internment camps they were
released only after the war ended.
00:56:07
It was many years before the government
officially apologized for mistreating
00:56:13
Japanese Americans.
00:56:35
But one more to do the progress for another
group that was often the target of
00:56:41
discrimination black
Americans. Black leaders
00:56:47
spoke out they said that
it was unfair it to fight
00:56:52
a war for freedom in Europe while black
Americans did not have old the same

Philip Randolph threatened to lead
00:57:25
a giant March on Washington for
civil rights for blacks. President
00:57:32
Roosevelt reacted by issuing
an order that made it
00:57:36
a crime to deny blacks at the chance
for jobs in defense industries
00:57:43
He also ordered the armed forces to change
some of their rules that discriminated
00:57:50
against blacks service members. Blanks
made progress in the military and
00:57:57
defense industries but most other
industries still refused to give them an
00:58:04
equal chance. Major progress in civil
rights would not come until the
00:58:10
19 fifties and sixties.
00:58:28
Life was busy during the war years there
were many changes in the economy business
00:58:34
music race relations and other areas
but in many ways life continued as it
00:58:41
always does America. Did what they could
during the hard years of World War 2 They
00:58:48
keep life on the home front as normal as
possible but almost everyone understood
00:58:54
that the 1st job was to support the
troops overseas and win the war.
00:59:02
This strength of purpose at home gave the
American soldiers the support they needed
00:59:08
and it also helped President Roosevelt as
he negotiated with other world leaders
00:59:14
diplomacy and foreign relations became
much more complex during the war.

00:04:51
It's Thursday March
19th and this is v.o.a.
00:04:55
Asia I'm Deborah are beginning
Washington today we're broadcasting from
00:05:00
a alternative situation and turn to
00:05:03
a location that's in part because in
large measure because of the coronavirus
00:05:10
buildings are emptying out and people are
finding different ways of working well
00:05:16
socially distancing that's what I'm doing
so the audio may not be exactly what
00:05:21
you're used to don't worry we're going to
work on all of that and make it better in
00:05:28
the coming days. One thing
that we're going to
00:05:35
continue to do and that we won't stop is
bringing you the very best information
00:05:40
that we can the most accurate and the
most timely news and information now
00:05:47
that 6 material that our journalists at
Voice of America are producing around the
00:05:53
world is that material from our sister
broadcasters such as our f.a. Or r.f.e.
00:06:00
R.l.
00:06:01
As well as material from established
organizations like the Associated Press and
00:06:08
Reuters So we're culling through the very
best information that we can and this is
00:06:15
a great opportunity for me to mention
that right on our home page for v.o.a.
00:06:20
News dot com There is
00:06:22
a big red banner link that says
corona virus update and you can
00:06:29
be assured that if you go there if you
click on that you are going to get the
00:06:34
latest news and information that we
have and that we have confidence
00:06:41
in its accuracy and its truthfulness
So again we thought it today might be
00:06:48
a good chance. It's to
revisit where we are there's
00:06:53
a lot of stories obviously today's program
is pretty much mostly going to be about
00:06:58
coronavirus it's not always going to be
the case we're going to return to airing
00:07:03
features and all kinds of you know profiles
of life in America and that sort of
00:07:08
thing in the coming days and weeks ahead
these are extraordinary circumstances and
00:07:15
we are doing our best to make sure that you
are being served now we thought we just
00:07:21
would begin today with
taking a very quick overview
00:07:25
a snapshot as it were as to where we are
right now don't glow Beloit Now many of
00:07:31
you know that the corona virus appears
to have originated in who Bay province
00:07:38
in China that certainly for
00:07:40
a long time where the epicenter was maybe
not so much anymore at least according to
00:07:45
the w.h.o.
00:07:47
Currently China is reporting
81058 confirmed cases of Corona
00:07:54
virus not covert 1000 which is the disease
and they are also reporting over 3200
00:08:01
deaths from covert 19 so
they're trying to get
00:08:05
a handle on that they're
doing the best they can it's
00:08:09
a very big country and so they're trying
to keep things under control as much as
00:08:14
possible 2nd on the list is Italy you've
probably heard that said the w.h.o.
00:08:21
The World Health Organization has alerted
people that Europe is actually kind of
00:08:27
becoming the hot spot for this Fred of
coronavirus and Italy is certainly one
00:08:33
of those places Italy right now
is reporting 31506 confirmed
00:08:40
cases and that's a tremendous number
of cases for a country with such
00:08:45
a relatively small population there
also reporting. Over $2500.00 deaths so
00:08:51
far health experts there are saying
they are not at the end of it that they
00:08:57
continue to expect things to go from bad
to worse the hospital systems there are
00:09:03
being overtaxed So we will keep our eye on
what happens in Italy very closely next
00:09:10
on the list to run you've no
doubt heard that Iran has been
00:09:15
a hot spot of its own in some ways there
over 16000 cases that have been reported
00:09:22
in Iran alone with 988
deaths again staggeringly
00:09:29
large numbers now some Iranian officials
recently told the press that they fear
00:09:35
that once this is all said and done that
as many as 1000000 Iranians might die from
00:09:42
code 900 now we haven't seen those numbers
confirmed anywhere else by any other
00:09:49
health organization we're just reporting
that that's what the government is saying
00:09:54
Spain is coming in next with
11748 confirmed cases 533
00:10:01
deaths Germany not doing
so much better but
00:10:05
a little bit better 1257
cases confirmed and 24
00:10:12
deaths which is an encouraging number
and of course South Korea which was for
00:10:17
a long time sort of the hot spot outside
of who Bay is reporting now 8320
00:10:24
cases and 81 deaths it's really
00:10:28
a testament to how hard they have been
working in South Korea to try and limit the
00:10:34
spread of corona virus and to treat
those who are sick with covert 19
00:10:41
and other many other nations that follow
just simply too many to list this is
00:10:47
a virus that is. Clearly touching every
continent now and we're watching to
00:10:53
see it's going to spread in different ways
and different paths in different spots
00:10:59
and that's in part because of local
situations and in part because of how
00:11:03
governments respond so we're going to keep
our eye on those numbers those numbers
00:11:08
will go up and people should simply prepare
for that social distancing and maybe
00:11:14
a big help certainly washing hands trying
to get as much sleep as possible trying
00:11:20
to reduce stress eating healthily as possible
all of these things are important but
00:11:26
there are no guarantee that anybody in
particular is not going to catch the virus

00:12:33
leading off our section on the coronavirus
is this most recent story this comes to
00:12:39
us from Steve Herman Steve is our senior
White House correspondent and let me just
00:12:46
read
00:12:46
a little bit to you if I may be. Federal
government is looking at quickly sending
00:12:52
money directly to Americans to help soften
the economic blow from the coronavirus
00:12:57
pandemic quote I think we're going to do
something that gets money as quickly as
00:13:02
possible to Americans President Trump
told White House reporters on Tuesday
00:13:08
treasury secretary Steve Nugent said the
president has instructed me we have to do
00:13:14
this now we're looking at sending checks
to Americans immediately and I mean now in
00:13:20
the next 2 weeks the Trump administration
is seeking to get Congress to approve an
00:13:27
infusion of as much as $850000000000.00
into the economy that includes
00:13:33
$250000000000.00 for small business loans
00:13:37
a 50 dollars 1000000000 dollar package
to bail out nation's airlines as part
00:13:44
of an emergency stimulus package that should
be noted that said Not everywhere but
00:13:50
increasingly and more and more places
you're seeing it in some states such as
00:13:55
Maryland you're seeing it in some cities
such as San Francisco and even here in
00:14:00
Washington d.c.
00:14:02
Various government officials have imposed
00:14:05
a social distancing bands if you or they
come under a variety of names is it
00:14:10
a lockdown is it a quarantine is it
00:14:13
a ban and what is it exactly but what
it usually entails is that places where
00:14:20
people gather restaurants
bars movie theaters jams even
00:14:27
libraries some other kinds of public
gathering places are being closed and
00:14:34
they're being closed under order of the
got government the whole idea here is to
00:14:39
limit individuals exposure to other
individuals because that's exactly
00:14:46
how this respiratory virus. This is
transmitted it's transmitted through the air
00:14:52
and it passes individual to individual
so what's happening is many
00:14:59
people many many hundreds of thousands of
people are finding themselves at least
00:15:05
temporarily without work for
00:15:07
a loaded questioning what's going to happen
and that is creating enormous financial
00:15:14
strain on the system.

00:15:44
States take aggressive action
against coronavirus this by v.o.a.
00:15:51
As Cho she writes she begins with this
quote stay home stay safe stay home
00:15:57
has
00:15:58
a cave in Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolfe
urged his residents while announcing his
00:16:03
shutdown order at least 13 states including
California Connecticut Delaware issued
00:16:10
executive orders this week to close bars
and restaurants limiting their service to
00:16:16
carry out and delivery or hers only add
the District of Columbia to that with
00:16:21
thousands of new coronavirus cases across
the United States the numbers took
00:16:26
a precipitous jump today is Thursday
they just in the last not even
00:16:31
a week since last Friday in the
United States they really took
00:16:36
a precipitous jump so that Scott
people's attention with thousands of new
00:16:40
coronavirus cases across the United
States states are implementing aggressive
00:16:46
actions to stop the rapid spread of. Virus
some governors gave clear warnings to
00:16:52
people who aren't heeding them here's
00:16:54
a quote I would say to them weeks from now
months from now when one of those party
00:16:59
goers one of those people that they
defied the order to have into their
00:17:04
establishment become sick somebody perhaps
that might die they should know that
00:17:10
they are responsible for that and they
should not hold these parties that was
00:17:17
Illinois governor j.b.
00:17:18
Pritzker who speaking at
00:17:20
a news conference on Monday California
Florida Georgia Maine and Tennessee declared
00:17:26
states of emergency in New Jersey set
00:17:29
a statewide curfew from 8 pm
to 5 pm of course there's also
00:17:34
a national state of emergency that was
announced last week by President Trump that
00:17:40
doesn't number of things to release is some
decent amount of federal monies to get
00:17:46
help where it's needed particularly to
people who are on the front lines the
00:17:51
hospital staff who are running low of
of critical material be they masks
00:17:58
or surgical gloves or gowns or respirators
or you know that kind of ventilators
00:18:04
these things are in short supply and there
is worry that this may continue for some
00:18:11
time anecdotally part of these
shutdowns for example Washington d.c.
00:18:17
I live almost right at the corner of
00:18:19
a very busy intersection always lively
always something going on here in Washington
00:18:25
d.c.
00:18:26
It is totally empty there are no pedestrians
there is no traffic except for maybe
00:18:33
emergency vehicles it's eerie
and of course there are some
00:18:40
health professionals in the United States
and elsewhere who are cautioning that
00:18:46
these social distancing. Process
A's plans actions that we are
00:18:53
taking that limit our exposure to other
people that largely keep people in their
00:18:59
house you know safe from the virus presumably
may continue for some time but this
00:19:05
probably isn't going to be
00:19:07
a couple weeks this may be several months
so we're going to have to keep our eyes

00:20:19
Urges nations to enact tougher measures
to combat the corona virus and she writes
00:20:24
The World Health Organization is
urging governments to implement
00:20:28
a comprehensive aggressive approach
in tackling covert 19 to slow down
00:20:35
the rapidly increasing number of cases and
deaths from this now dangerous new virus
00:20:42
in Europe and in other parts of the world
again Europe is seen by many now it's as
00:20:47
a real hotspot. The largest number of cases
and deaths from Corona virus are still
00:20:52
being reported in from the Western Pacific
region which includes China however
00:20:58
Europe is running a close 2nd and now has
00:21:02
a larger cumulative number of confirmed
infections and deaths than all other
00:21:08
regions combined the w.h.o.
00:21:10
Says it's difficult to nail down any one
factor or particular scenario behind this
00:21:17
surge of cases in Europe that we do a Joe
spokesman Christian Linamar told v.o.a.
00:21:23
That his agency has been warning for weeks
that this novel virus will grab hold and
00:21:30
continue to spread with relentless speed
around the world this is some tough
00:21:35
language quote at the
same time when you have
00:21:38
a large spike of cases either because
they have been undetected for
00:21:42
a while or because of an
unfortunate incident were
00:21:45
a large group of people gets infected at
any one time you reach capacity problems
00:21:51
and this is what many Your pm countries
seem to be struggling with right now it's
00:21:58
certainly something that Italy and Spain
are struggling with German Chancellor
00:22:03
Angela Merkel is set to make
00:22:06
a televised address fairly shortly this
will be her 1st televised address ever
00:22:13

00:22:46
This is
00:22:46
a Reuters story bulge. Supermarket chain
moves to protect older people from Corona
00:22:53
virus now you may have heard that some
doctors are speculating that it appears that
00:22:59
older people or people who are immunocompromised
that means maybe they have some
00:23:05
sort of underlying conditions such as
chronic heart problems diabetes h.i.v.
00:23:12
Those kinds of if you do suppressive
conditions that they may be at greater risk
00:23:19
for catching the corona virus and developing
covert 19 so writers rights in this
00:23:26
story is here that Belgian supermarket
chain highs has moved to protect its
00:23:31
customers over 65 years of age the age
group most at risk from the Corona virus
00:23:37
they write by reserving the 1st hour after
it shops open only for elderly shoppers
00:23:44
that's interesting the decision has
00:23:46
a potted since Tuesday and more than 700
of the company's shops in Belgium as well
00:23:52
as its
00:23:52
a stop and shop chain in the United States
quote I came here to stop for some groceries
00:23:59
to have an effect home so I don't run out
or run around too much because I think
00:24:03
it's too dangerous said all
3 a 71 year old wearing
00:24:09
a mask over his nose and his mouth as he
told Reuters as he was preparing to leave
00:24:15
the shop despite the especially reserved
time there was still lines of elderly
00:24:20
shoppers waiting to enter shops on Wednesday
because of the restriction that only
00:24:25
150 people can in
00:24:28
a Delhaize supermarket at any given time
be admitted this again to limit the
00:24:34
infection this raises an interesting point
you may have seen some places where
00:24:38
people are lining up queuing up long lines
kind of crowding together to get into
00:24:44
a certain place whether
it's a supermarket or
00:24:47
a bank or something. Like that I will
simply repeat what the public health
00:24:52
professionals are repeating which is if
we're supposed to be practicing social
00:24:58
distancing that probably the worst thing
that we can be doing is packing ourselves
00:25:03
together in compact little groups where
we're all basically breathing on top of
00:25:09
each other that can be
00:25:11
a perfect the factor for virus transmission
so we should try to avoid those
00:25:18
situations as much as we can.

00:26:23
Stocks plunged in early trading Wednesday
amid investor uncertainty over the
00:26:29
government's response to the coronavirus
setting the stage for what may be another
00:26:34
highly volatile day of trading it has been
volatile so far we can tell you that the
00:26:40
Dow Jones Industrial
Average and the s. And p.
00:26:43
500 are were more than 5 percent lower
here shortly after the markets. Open while
00:26:49
the Nasdaq composite was down more than 4
percent and investors in the financial
00:26:55
markets are looking for some form of
call me and something to ease their
00:27:01
concerns about where things may be heading
around the world not just in the United
00:27:07
States but but around the world
this story from Reuters u.s.
00:27:11
Health officials on Wednesday appealed
to use to do their part by heating
00:27:16
guidelines on self isolation to blunt the
corona virus outbreak and warned that the
00:27:23
White House may have to extend its
action plan if 15 days proves
00:27:29
insufficient quote 15 days is likely not
going to be enough to get us all the way
00:27:35
through but we really need to lean into
it now so we can bend the curve in 15
00:27:41
days and at that point we'll
reassess this a quote from u.s.
00:27:46
Surgeon general drone
Adams who is speaking on
00:27:49
a national television network today the
phrase you may have heard bending the curve
00:27:56
is in fact what public health officials
are hoping to see which is rather than
00:28:01
seeing spikes of cases and of deaths
like we're seeing in Italy where there
00:28:08
is work it puts such
00:28:09
a condensed demand on medical supplies
it needs what they're hoping to do
00:28:16
is bend that curve really kind of tried
flat out that doesn't mean people aren't
00:28:22
going to get infected that doesn't mean
people aren't going to get sick but it's
00:28:26
not going to happen you know all of
00:28:28
a sudden bang kind of way I deal it and
it will be flattened out and health
00:28:34
professionals will be able to much better
assess and deal with and treat patients
00:28:41
as their needs come by well
that is a look at just
00:28:45
a few of the stories that are making headlines
right. Now of course there are many
00:28:50
many more and you can find those many many

especially written for people learning
00:30:10
English. We also explain words
00:30:17

stories and information from around the
00:30:23
world. Today on the program you will
hear stories from Ashley Thompson and
00:30:30
and ball later Steve Amber will present
our American history series The
00:30:37
Making of
00:30:38
a nation but 1st here is
Ashley Thompson. With
00:30:45
schools shutting down and the ways of
daily life changing children are hearing
00:30:52
more about the new coronavirus
they may not fully understand it
00:30:58
or know how seriously to take
it but their lives are affected
00:31:05
many parents are trying to decide how to
talk with their children about the virus
00:31:12
and of the outbreak Some say they
are checking in each day to see how
00:31:19
their children are doing but others worry
that talking too much about it could make
00:31:26
their children more nervous and fearful in
00:31:30
a call pony is the mother of 10
year old Clara and 12 year old Jane
00:31:37
the family lives in Audubon
New Jersey she said We talk
00:31:43
a lot about it I watch the news every
morning and they're always watching it too
00:31:50
both girls said they have talked about the
virus at school Jane said her teachers
00:31:56
have discussed it during science
lessons I'm not really as scared of it
00:32:03
it's still not even that many people
getting sick here Jane said one of my
00:32:10
friends is really scared of it but she's
honestly really scared of all diseases
00:32:17
back Young said she has decided to limit
the conversations with her 4 children they
00:32:24
are ages 810-1215 the family lives in Fort
00:32:31
Mill South Carolina she said she does
not want them to be afraid of getting
00:32:37
sick because kids get sick pretty
often and she does not want them
00:32:44
to worry about dying. The
new corona virus causes
00:32:49
a disease called Kovac 19 for
most people including children
00:32:56
it results in only mild or
moderate sickness such as
00:33:02
a temperature and cough for others
especially older adults and people
00:33:08
with existing health problems it can
cause more severe illness including
00:33:15
pneumonia which facts
00:33:17
a person's ability to breathe most
people recover the World Health
00:33:23
Organization says that people with minor
sickness recover in about 2 weeks
00:33:31
those with
00:33:31
a more serious case may take 3 to 6
weeks to recover child psychology
00:33:38
experts advise parents and others
to be calm and positive when
00:33:45
discussing the issue with young people they
suggest centering discussions on active
00:33:52
steps one can take They also suggested
doing research in order to answer
00:33:58
children's questions
truthfully Dr Jamie Howard is
00:34:04
a psychologist at the nonprofit Child
Mind Institute she said it is important
00:34:11
to reassure children ask them if they
have questions and tell them how they can
00:34:18
stay safe the Institute and the u.s.
00:34:22
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
offer suggestions on talking with
00:34:28
children some teachers and sports
coaches are working to stop the
00:34:34
idea that the virus is tied to any
group or race the new coronavirus
00:34:41
1st appeared in China. Some American
adults are staying away from Chinese
00:34:48
restaurants and businesses out of
fear that they may get the virus
00:34:54
Seattle public schools in the state of
Washington wrote on its website that
00:35:00
misinformation has led to fear and
anger the school district's leaders
00:35:07
urged students to combat racism and
bias we are aware of reports that
00:35:13
some of our Asian students have been
targeted and discriminated against in
00:35:19
connection to coded 19 their school
leaders wrote this is unacceptable
00:35:27
parents should explain that measures such
as wearing covers over your mouth and
00:35:33
nose and closing schools are
preventative and temporary Dr Howard
00:35:40
said she urges parents to follow
what the television personality Mr
00:35:46
Rogers used to say look to the
helpers to see what doctors
00:35:53
teachers parents and scientists
are doing to keep them safe I'm
00:35:59
Ashley Thompson.
00:36:47
Wasim
00:36:47
a con stopped attending school
6 years ago she has yet to
00:36:54
complete her studies the 19 year
old is not an exception she
00:37:01
is like many other young women in new
where she lives in northern India
00:37:08
only about 30 percent of the women
there can read and write that is
00:37:15
about half the national
average was Sima Khan
00:37:21
left school because she had to do housework
and help her mother with younger
00:37:27
brothers and sisters she said and
there was no middle school in her
00:37:34
community at the same time
boys living in pet Piqua
00:37:41
in hard Yana State walk to the nearest
high school about 4 kilometers
00:37:47
away. Yet girls are not permitted
to leave the small village.
00:37:55
Many of the women work in fields or
care for farm animals young girls got
00:38:02
water while children play men often
sit outside their homes in the
00:38:08
sun after a cold winter
00:38:12
a group of young women from this mostly
Muslim community made it to college by
00:38:17
overcoming prejudices against women
now they are working to get more
00:38:24
girls into school every Sunday
they spread out in and other
00:38:30
villages to talk to people about why they
should let their daughters study the
00:38:37
young women persuaded Wassim cons mother
to keep her younger daughter at school
00:38:43
they ease her concerns about the
dollar ease the money or goods that
00:38:49
a woman's family must give to her
husband's family when they marry she
00:38:55
fears that educated girls will want
to marry educated men who will demand
00:39:01
a bigger dowry this is difficult for
many poor families who see no reason to
00:39:08
educate girls all rush to knit is
00:39:12
a postgraduate student studying
history she says her college
00:39:18
education has given her the strength
to fight the dowry tradition
00:39:25
I will only marry into
00:39:27
a family which does not demand
dowry she said however well to do
00:39:34
they may be. They young women
tell Khan that she can
00:39:40
return to school as
00:39:43
a girl her goal had been to join
India's police force she does not know
00:39:50
if she can go back but she says she
will do whatever she can to make
00:39:57
sure her sister does not leave
school I loved my classes she said
00:40:04
but I was helpless
00:40:07
a nonprofit organization called the selfie
with daughter foundation is leading the
00:40:13
campaign to empower and educate
women in these villages its aim is
00:40:20
to bring change by publicizing the success
stories of girls who came from the
00:40:25
villages and now serve as role
models for other families is one
00:40:32
a cause and began her campaign by persuading
her extended family to educate their
00:40:38
daughters she tells these women that
educated girls could help the villages
00:40:45
in some areas Lemmon are not permitted to
enter act with male lawyers be taught by
00:40:52
male teachers or get treated by
male doctors. And is training for
00:40:59
a job in health care as
a nurse when she was
00:41:03
a teenager she became terribly
sick but her treatment was
00:41:08
a problem her parents could not read and
medical centers in the area were very
00:41:15
poor quality it made her decide
to get her own education
00:41:23
Khan said she wants to bring medical
aid to women in the area this is
00:41:29
a Goal her father urged her to go for
even selling belongings to pay for her
00:41:36
nursing school. They don't want
to educate their daughters but
00:41:43
if women are ill they want
00:41:46
a lady doctor how will that happen
Khan said another girl in the
00:41:53
campaign Shahnaz Bano wants to teach in
00:41:58
a local school she said I tell them that
if your daughters don't attend schools
00:42:05
how will they find female teachers it is
00:42:10
a message the young women repeat as they
go from house to house they point out how
00:42:17
they had to fight with their families to
get the right to study sometimes even
00:42:24
when parents agree to let them
study others in the village raised
00:42:30
objections most boys who complete
college move away to look
00:42:37
for better jobs outside the villages
but the girls hope to use their skills
00:42:44
in education in the community
on German Islam is studying law
00:42:51
she wants to provide free legal aid to
women I don't want to do that for men she
00:42:58
adds but her bigger goal is to change
minds here men think that women
00:43:05
are only meant to do housework and give
birth to children Islam said we have to
00:43:11
change this thinking if we have
00:43:14
a quality under the law how can society
have this gender discrimination
00:43:22
the campaign is having success and flew
in saying some women they do most of the
00:43:28
work both at home and in the
fields. And is 30 years old
00:43:35
she is determined to educate her 3 daughters
she wants to make sure they can escape
00:43:41
her life story of hard backbreaking
work all day long she works with the
00:43:47
animals finds firewood cleans
cooks and washes dishes she said
00:43:55
if I had studied I would have been
saved from this. Time Jonathan

00:45:28
Welcome to the making of a nation
American history in the oh
00:45:34
a special English I'm Steve embers.
The United States entered the 2nd
00:45:41
World War In December of 1941 Europe
had already been at war since
00:45:48
1939 but the United States did not enter
00:45:52
a World War 2 until Japanese forces at
tack the American naval base at Pearl
00:45:59
Harbor Hawaii. The attack was
00:46:05
a surprise but American military and political
leaders had believed that the United
00:46:12
States sooner or later would be pulled into
the fighting and they began to prepare
00:46:18
for war. President Franklin Roosevelt
had been assistant secretary of the
00:46:25
Navy under President Woodrow Wilson
during World War one he remembered how
00:46:31
American troops were not ready if up that
war now that he was President Roosevelt
00:46:38
wanted to be sure that the United States
would be ready when it had to fight
00:46:44
throughout 1941 Roosevelt urged
American industries to produce more
00:46:51
weapons and other military supplies the
as damaged new government agencies
00:46:58
to work with industry to increase arms
production. Some business leaders
00:47:04
resisted Roosevelt's efforts they found
there was no need to produce more arms
00:47:10
while the United States was still at
peace but many others cooperated and by
00:47:17
the time. Pam attacked Pearl Harbor the
American economy was producing millions of
00:47:24
guns and other weapons still
this was not enough to fight
00:47:29
a war after the Japanese attack Roosevelt
increased his demands on American
00:47:36
industry he called 460000 war planes 45000
00:47:43
tanks and 20000 anti aircraft
guns and he wanted all these
00:47:49
within one year. A month after
the Pearl Harbor raid Roosevelt
00:47:56
organized the special committee to direct
military production he created another
00:48:03
group to help companies find men
and women for defense work and he
00:48:09
established
00:48:10
a new office where the nation's best
scientists and engineers could work together
00:48:17
to design new weapons these new
government organizations faced several
00:48:24
problems sometimes factories produced
too much of one product and not
00:48:30
enough of another sometimes tools
broke and some business owners
00:48:37
refused to accept government orders but
the weapons were produced and American
00:48:43
troops soon have but guns
and supplies they need.
00:48:54
The federal government had to quickly
expand its own workforce to meet war needs
00:49:01
federal spending increased from
$60000000000.00 in 1940 to
00:49:07
$89000000000.00 in 1944
that was 15 times as much
00:49:14
spending in just 5 years Roosevelt.
Had to take strong steps to get the
00:49:21
money if for all this spending he put limits
on wages he increased income taxes to
00:49:28
as much as 94 percent on potions
of incomes over 200000 dollars
00:49:35
and he asked the American people to lend
money to the federal government the people
00:49:41
answered by purchasing almost 100000000000
dollars in war bonds the great
00:49:48
injuries.
00:50:13
As wanted somebody else's not their
own federal officials had to
00:50:20
work hard to keep prices and supplies
under control they restricted how much
00:50:27
meat fuel and other goods people
could buy. The friends controlled
00:50:33
program generally worked its success kept
the American economy strong to support
00:50:40
the troops fighting in Europe and the Asia.
One reason these strong economic steps
00:50:47
worked was because most of the get American
people fully supported the war effort
00:50:53
talk to talk oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh
oh oh oh oh oh oh. 00000000 but I think
00:51:01
she's supposed to send the file and
she's making this to be part of
00:51:06
a keep up with. The keep shuffle out
of Sam but sitting up there on the
00:51:13
pistol that little bit can
do that in a minute and
00:51:16
a total. Of them will get out
of the thing Charlie the movie.
00:51:24
Both in public don't. Want to know that I
am on the living machine when they get
00:51:30
the attention she was called as
00:51:33
a gift to be there something you might
improve up hoping. That you can
00:51:40
look at photographs of people from those
times and see in their faces how strongly
00:51:46
they felt. In one picture from
the state of North Carolina
00:51:52
a group of men there standing in front
of old rubber tires they are planning to
00:51:58
give the tires to the army to be fixed
and used for military vehicles. Another
00:52:05
photo shows a woman visiting
a hospital she is singing to
00:52:10
a soldier to lift his spirits still
another photo shows a man who owns
00:52:17
a small food store he is placing
the signs on meat and cans of food
00:52:24
to tell people how much they are allowed
to buy. You can also get an idea
00:52:31
about the feelings of the times by the
names of some of the popular songs during
00:52:37
World War 2. Come back there.
00:52:46
Well I. Was.
00:52:54
Alone. With the Day. While I.
00:53:01
Was. In
00:53:08
addition to Rosie the Riveter there
were songs like Praise the Lord m.
00:53:13
As for the ammunition. One of the most
hopeful songs was this was recorded by
00:53:20
Britain's beer on the. Lawn I.
00:53:28
Was on was. Not gone dump
00:53:35
on my good. Long long walk.
00:53:43
And the rain all lonely and
drawl I'm watching. From
00:53:50
the. Laundry. To the
00:53:57
bomb. Bomb bomb bomb.
00:54:06
Bomb bomb. Bomb bomb bomb.
00:54:16
And eventually. Bomb the lawn.
00:54:26
When we. Saw
00:54:29
a new life when he really.
Honestly we saw in the.
00:54:40
Dawn again. Lawyer.
00:54:50
Not all Americans supported the war
00:54:53
a small number refused to fight because
of religious or moral beliefs they were
00:55:00
known as conscientious objectors and some
Americans supported at all for Hitler
00:55:07
and other fascists but almost everyone
else wanted to win the war quickly
00:55:14
and return to
00:55:15
a normal life. Many Japanese
Americans served with honor in
00:55:22
the United States armed forces but many
Americans were suspicious of anyone whose
00:55:29
family had come from Japan. They refused
to trust even Japanese American
00:55:36
families who had lived in the
United States for more than
00:55:40
a century. Many banks refused to
lend money to Japanese Americans
00:55:47
many stores would not sell to them.
The federal government relocated
00:55:54
thousands of Japanese Americans in
California and other states into
00:56:00
internment camps they were
released only after the war ended.
00:56:07
It was many years before the government
officially apologized for mistreating
00:56:13
Japanese Americans.
00:56:35
But one more to do the progress for another
group that was often the target of
00:56:41
discrimination black
Americans. Black leaders
00:56:47
spoke out they said that
it was unfair it to fight
00:56:52
a war for freedom in Europe while black
Americans did not have old the same
00:56:58
freedoms as white citizens.
Long. White innocent or less.
00:57:08
Noble or some of. Them and
then. The civil rights
00:57:15
revolution but no one to bring in 1941
00:57:20
a leader in the black community a
Philip Randolph threatened to lead
00:57:25
a giant March on Washington for
civil rights for blacks. President
00:57:32
Roosevelt reacted by issuing
an order that made it
00:57:36
a crime to deny blacks at the chance
for jobs in defense industries
00:57:43
He also ordered the armed forces to change
some of their rules that discriminated
00:57:50
against blacks service members. Blanks
made progress in the military and
00:57:57
defense industries but most other
industries still refused to give them an
00:58:04
equal chance. Major progress in civil
rights would not come until the
00:58:10
19 fifties and sixties.
00:58:28
Life was busy during the war years there
were many changes in the economy business
00:58:34
music race relations and other areas
but in many ways life continued as it
00:58:41
always does America. Did what they could
during the hard years of World War 2 They
00:58:48
keep life on the home front as normal as
possible but almost everyone understood
00:58:54
that the 1st job was to support the
troops overseas and win the war.
00:59:02
This strength of purpose at home gave the
American soldiers the support they needed
00:59:08
and it also helped President Roosevelt as
he negotiated with other world leaders
00:59:14
diplomacy and foreign relations became
much more complex during the war.
00:59:23
And that's our program for today listen
again tomorrow to learn English through
00:59:29
stories from around the war. Jonathan.
