people globally what you say to Americans

00:03:02
a special edition of issues in the news
I'm Kim Lewis your host for this week's
00:03:06
show if you're wondering why I am hosting
this show as everyone is now aware the
00:03:11
cold it 19 pandemic has affected all aspects
of our lives including our programming
00:03:17
here at the Voice of America we are working
very hard using creative ways to help
00:03:21
keep you up to date on the latest news
developments Well joining me via phone is
00:03:26
one of issues in the news distinguished
journalist and that is j.j.
00:03:30
Grey national security correspondent for w
t o p and host of Target USA welcome j.j.
00:03:36
And thank you for your flexibility and
being able to join me via phone thank you
00:03:41
Kam It's my pleasure and being
00:03:43
a veteran of your way I certainly understand
your talent is that you're facing and
00:03:49
applaud you for taking the steps to make
sure that the. Thank you so much well of
00:03:55
course the biggest story of around the
globe right now is the corona virus which
00:03:59
continues. Spread in various parts of the
world cases are now being reported even
00:04:03
in Africa here in the us the state of
California has been shut down by the
00:04:08
government and hopes of stopping the
spread of the virus while the u.s.
00:04:12
Centers for Disease Control that myths
that much of co that 19 remains
00:04:16
a mystery that corona virus has been around
for decades and recently from June 24th
00:04:22
teen through July 2017 there
were 39 $1558.00 cases of
00:04:28
a positive strain of Corona
just here in the u.s.
00:04:31
Which is an average of $13196.00 cases
during that timeframe presently some
00:04:38
parts of the world experience in
00:04:40
a surge of the virus Well so far 86000
people have recovered from covert 19 what
00:04:46
j.j. We have dealt with various
viruses in the past h one
00:04:50
n one SARS murderers Ebola the Hong Kong
flu of the swine flu and back in the early
00:04:56
1900 a flu epidemic that actually
initiated here in the u.s.
00:05:01
But was known worldwide as the Spanish flu
which killed hundreds of thousands of
00:05:06
people worldwide So what are your thoughts
on why this fire is has caused panic and
00:05:11
fear here and the year 2020 there in
my opinion care more or 3 elements.
00:05:19
Because. There is the way in which
it was responded to early on and
00:05:26
then. We are so globally connected are
all contributing factors to what is
00:05:32
blown up in the water when you're looking
at what took place when people started to
00:05:38
grieve. In late December and it was
00:05:42
a record year that. People started to
figure out something was going on there
00:05:47
people or well. Realize just what could
happen flights were still coming out of
00:05:55
the. Internet for several weeks after that
and it was there. Clear probably by the
00:06:02
early part of January that that was blowing
up into something that the world the
00:06:06
devil seen before I don't believe the world
was prepared for anything like this and
00:06:11
I think the key thank you again is the
global connectivity here that has triggered
00:06:17
this worldwide pandemic so quickly because
when you think about it this all started
00:06:22
in late December as I mentioned that look
where we are down in the barge and you
00:06:27
know there are 246000 cases of this and
it shows no signs of abating at least in
00:06:33
this part of the world China is trying
to study right now it's not according to
00:06:38
what they say and it's not clear that we
completely every time we hear from them is
00:06:43
saying that there were no new cases if
that's the case and Greg but many people are
00:06:48
worried about whether or not we can believe
what they're saying about this also
00:06:51
Jay-Jay not everyone seems to be panicking
over this virus we're being shown videos
00:06:56
and photographs of people and socialize
settings still such as the hundreds of
00:07:01
beachgoers in Florida who are undergoing
a spring break also a family in the u.s.
00:07:06
State of New Jersey they lost 3
family members to cope and 19 after
00:07:10
a family gatherings so why do you think
people still are not heeding the warnings
00:07:15
and complying with the government regarding
social distancing Tim I think that the
00:07:20
time we live that I've spoken with people
who are experts in communications aside
00:07:26
from the media I'm talking about corporate
and private sector communications and
00:07:31
many different types of communications
even social media communications and what
00:07:36
they have said to me is this is plain and
simple people have gotten used to being
00:07:42
able to access what they want to hear when
they want to hear things that they are
00:07:48
not necessarily interested
in saving or that this is
00:07:51
a different situation and here's why yesterday
there are about 9000 plus cases it's
00:07:57
7 30 in the morning here in the u.s.
00:07:59
To. There 14000 yesterday there
were about 13000 to Durham and 7
00:08:06
in the morning today there are 16000
so what this means is that the u.s.
00:08:12
Veteran rate is growing faster than that
in Germany and it's probably going to move
00:08:19
through many and even have to run by the
early part of next week and Italy and.
00:08:26
The us and
00:08:27
a part of it with that that the people
either don't know don't care or are not
00:08:33
taking appropriate because
they're not sure what to do and
00:08:36
a lot of. People simply as I mentioned
before ignore what they've been told and it
00:08:43
a case of not knowing exactly what to do
Yes this takes me back our coverage here
00:08:48
the Voice of America of the Ebola virus
in West Africa back on 2014 where
00:08:53
a lot of the spread was due to people
basically not following direction people also
00:08:59
getting mixed communication they're getting
from unification from health agencies
00:09:04
from humanitarian agencies
the show the c.d.c.
00:09:08
And yet they are also getting information
from their local you know village chiefs
00:09:13
who are telling them sometimes giving them
the opposite of what they would being
00:09:17
told by the c.d.c.
00:09:19
So I don't think that would be the case
here Phil but I think it's mostly of what
00:09:23
you're saying people just say I'm going
to live my life the way I want to I don't
00:09:26
need the government to tell me what to do
so I think it's more of that than getting
00:09:31
mixed signals Yeah that is true and this
is the here's the problem with people
00:09:36
decide to take that approach then they
may live birth order because like your
00:09:42
government or the government in the world
the leaders of the government are. The
00:09:49
people who are believed to be in populations
around the world and here's why this
00:09:54
is an airborne transmitted type of virus
and it can happen. Anyone And we've
00:10:01
noted we've any situation where people who
either been on an airplane people who
00:10:07
are in buildings people who. Are out in
public places forward think your government
00:10:14
security every day. That their
grandparents. Their people
00:10:21
to getting sick by being sick and by
the by are one thing that struck me as
00:10:26
important is. That from The New York Governor
Andrew Cuomo on Thursday and he said
00:10:33
. People have the virus and we don't know
who they are because we can't have them
00:10:39
but the most telling thing he said to
me was found that people had that virus
00:10:45
before we knew about it and that many of
them have recovered on their own but that
00:10:52
can be in one of our what the problem
well before it became publicly known and
00:10:58
there may be people struggling right now
so this is the key thing to be to be
00:11:03
looking at I think for those people who
are reluctant to pay attention is that it
00:11:08
may already be in your neighborhood may
already be in your home but you need to pay
00:11:12
attention because the result could
be problematic exactly now j.j.
00:11:17
We do have all brand us on the line with
us now we had some technical difficulties
00:11:21
earlier and we're now able to bring him
and this is Paul Brandis White House
00:11:25
reporter for West Wing reports and
00:11:27
a columnist for USA Today thank you Paul
I'm so glad you could join us or you thank
00:11:32
you good now fall for you here in the u.s.
00:11:35
The Trump administration is taking measures
to not only combat the spread of the
00:11:40
virus but to help people economically so
that the economy does not collapse from
00:11:44
this some of these measures include
00:11:46
a coronavirus stimulus plan to provide
people with cash to help small businesses
00:11:52
stay in business and to prevent home
foreclosures he's also deploying to hospital
00:11:57
ships one on the East Coast and one. On
the West Coast and also he may enable the
00:12:03
Defense Production Act So how so far how
do you think President Trump is handling
00:12:08
the pandemic Well according
to him he's doing
00:12:11
a great job but the critics of course point
to the fact that we are well behind in
00:12:18
testing here's kind of an interesting story
the 1st confirmed case of coronavirus
00:12:24
was confirmed in both South Korea and the
United States on that ferry same day as
00:12:31
South Korea has raced ahead with massive
testing of its people they have lowered
00:12:36
the curve for bend the curve that's
sort of the phrase that's being
00:12:41
a use chair but the United States in that
regard is way behind there are shortages
00:12:47
testing kits there are shortages of maps
there are shortages of all kinds of
00:12:53
medical gear all sorts of things this is
that me saying that this is governors
00:12:58
around the nation who say that this is
Hospital officials around the country who
00:13:03
are saying that so that's sort of the
situation on the ground and as this virus
00:13:09
spread the number of cases is growing
quite rapidly I think is going to come
00:13:14
a time when the shortages become quite
apparent judge of your thoughts on this I
00:13:19
know you previously mentioned the lack of
testing in the beginning yeah exactly and
00:13:24
you know we were seeing the results of
that one of the things that took place as
00:13:29
this started was we were seeing in some
places like romantic rise in the number of
00:13:34
cases in other places there were minimal
there was minimal reporting even yesterday
00:13:39
you look at Russia Russia was reporting
something like 150 some cases of the
00:13:45
coronavirus and that was only 10 more than
the day before one of us exploding on
00:13:50
the western border and
girls that of course was
00:13:53
a gigantic in China from the very beginning
Russia which sits in between them has
00:13:58
not had more. A relatively few cases so I
thought if they can be gotten from prison
00:14:04
people about that and out. They say they
believe the devil that is whining about it
00:14:09
because it's
00:14:10
a governmental thing relating to the
Clintons insisting getting who want to serve
00:14:16
and then it's about the inability
to get care they can't get care so
00:14:22
a part of what I'm hearing it will help
from some of the folks at the speaking with
00:14:26
its doctors and have been told the inquest
to find the cases Okolona by was that
00:14:32
they had pneumonia in order to none
disturb the political kerning and
00:14:39
old girls who I need to say that on
not being able to tap kids but it's
00:14:46
a problem not just here in the us but in
other places as well and on that note
00:14:50
we're going to take
00:14:51

00:15:16
panel j.j. Grey national security
correspondent for w t o p
00:15:20
n host of Target USA and Paul Brandis White
House reporter for West Wing reports
00:15:25
and
00:15:25
a columnist for USA Today I'm going to throw
this question out to both of you what
00:15:31
would it mean for people
if the government declares
00:15:33
a coronavirus national emergency j.j.
00:15:37
Well what it would mean and we should take
this very seriously I would stare into
00:15:42
v.o.a.
00:15:42
Building on September 11th 2001 and
for those who remember or Ok history
00:15:49
of that day they know that plane that
crashed in some kinds of pain it was
00:15:54
supposedly destined for the u.s.
00:15:56
Capitol and for those who know
anything about the b.o.h.
00:15:59
Building. Court is building literally
right across the street from the u.s.
00:16:03
Capitol I can recall walking out the
door and seeing the streets swarmed with
00:16:09
blankets you'd be with blue lights in a
panic I can also remember probably maybe
00:16:15
a half an hour 40 minutes later walking up
to the roof of that building and seeing
00:16:20
the Pentagon on fire and of course knowing
that 2 towers can't be hitting New York
00:16:24
the whole country was in a bit of
00:16:27
a panic so what this suggests to doing
right now is that somebody believes what
00:16:33
they need to do in order
to deal with this on
00:16:36
a national scale but what has to be done
if the same thing that were done later
00:16:41
that very same day I remember walking down
the street independent there was not one
00:16:46
car in sight there were only military
vehicles on the side and people were told
00:16:51
walk in the center of the street and they
got down there away from that this was on
00:16:55
the set of the streets what I'm getting
at here is they're going to be some very
00:16:59
strict circumstances and London is
going to lock down shortly at least on
00:17:03
a partial basis for this weekend it's not
clear how long that kind of activity they
00:17:08
come to the u.s.
00:17:09
That kind of activity may need people
needing permission slips if you will to be
00:17:14
out on the streets it also may mean people
being cracked by the government that
00:17:19
know that several governments overseas are
already doing that using location data
00:17:23
from smartphones and other devices those
kinds of things could come to the u.s.
00:17:28
If it gets to that point and based on where
we are right now and again mentioned
00:17:33
earlier can people not heeding the advice
going in and some stimulant to prevent
00:17:38
more infection that may be a
done deal here in the u.s.
00:17:42
. And also Paul your thoughts on this that
I mentioned earlier that the governor of
00:17:47
California shut the state of California
down meaning that people can only go out
00:17:52
for essentials such as food items or arm
medicine they can go out to exercise I
00:17:58
understand your thoughts on that. Well we're
already seeing some of the curfews in
00:18:03
place for example in the state of
New Jersey which is on the u.s.
00:18:08
East coast quite particular state
of the governor there has ordered
00:18:12
a statewide therapy or you could only be
out in the burgeon see if we go into the
00:18:18
grocery store or something and I think
those are beginning to pop up in other
00:18:23
places but I want to comment
on something that j.j.
00:18:27
Said very interesting point about 2001
that was now nearly 20 years ago hard
00:18:34
to believe that so much time has passed
but what I think is interesting between
00:18:39
then and now is that back then there was
00:18:42
a lot more confidence
and trust in the u.s.
00:18:46
Government to do the right things people
had trust and faith in the government to
00:18:52
do what was right I think that is
not so much the case now we had
00:18:57
a big economic crisis here in
2007 through 2009 and polls
00:19:04
show that ever since then the trust that
Americans have in government to do the
00:19:10
right things has
00:19:11
a road ahead and I think that has
remained so we enter this crisis with
00:19:16
a lot less trust and faith in government
to do the right thing frankly and also it
00:19:22
has not helped that doesn't trump has said
things in the White House briefing room
00:19:28
but frankly aren't true about how there's
testing kits available for every one of
00:19:34
the numbers are going down and so forth
so in terms of 1st thing the government
00:19:39
there are all kinds of reasons to support
of Syria that people simply don't have
00:19:44
faith in the government to
do the right thing here in
00:19:47
a crisis like this that is
only getting bigger that is
00:19:51
a problem so I think that's something that
we have to keep in mind as well and also
00:19:55
just want to go back and
look at China just for
00:19:59
a 2nd where. It has been reported in Mohan
China that this virus originated and
00:20:05
there have been reports that China
is saying and blaming even the u.s.
00:20:10
For manufacturing this virus What do you
all thoughts on this yeah you know there's
00:20:15
been discussions about this being
00:20:17
a bioengineered virus from the very beginning
and there been even some prominent
00:20:23
people including the u.s.
00:20:24
Senate again theory in
public that this was
00:20:29
a bioengineered this virus but he said that
it was trying to get it now so you know
00:20:36
saying among others that
it's something the u.s.
00:20:39
But you know you have
to think about this in
00:20:41
a logical way if you look at what this is
done to China's economy it's basically
00:20:47
delivered a blow to it
but it's going to take
00:20:49
a while to recover from Henry
to talk about what the u.s.
00:20:54
Is facing and this president is facing
00:20:57
a real lead from here and the way this is
going this isn't going well for him or
00:21:03
for the the u.s.
00:21:04
For protecting them and I don't think that
anybody that leaks of anything or create
00:21:09
anything like this to turn leases that
is going to do it without some kind of
00:21:13
consultation or term front to how it's
going to impact them personally at home
00:21:19
unless of course this with term that
scientists that nobody knows about I don't buy
00:21:24
that conspiracy theory please what about
you Paul I mean if you look at all the
00:21:27
damage that has been done in China an
awful lot of people killed their economy
00:21:33
taking just a major hit over the
past couple months these kind of
00:21:38
a virus is in pandemics have been
00:21:40
a part of human history going back
to the very beginning it was only
00:21:45
a century ago in fact that we had influenza
that killed millions of people around
00:21:52
the world and I've been talking to various
experts on these kind of change who say
00:21:57
look even when we get a grip on. As for
a virus and it's important to note that
00:22:03
a vaccine they say is probably at least a
year away or perhaps even the wall girl
00:22:08
a year and
00:22:09
a half because one date that they're talking
about we're going to be other viruses
00:22:14
and other pandemics that pop up from time
to time as well and some people fear in
00:22:19
fact they could be even worse than this
one if you can believe but so this theory
00:22:24
that you know some mad scientist in the lab
did something and that got out of hand
00:22:31
if I could be blunt kind of crackpot theories
that pop up and they read around the
00:22:36
Internet and I'm sure there are people who
believe those kind of things but I just
00:22:40
don't think it's true what it's estimated
that the virus outbreak could go on for
00:22:45
as long as 18 months so if so what
what The New Normal be like and what
00:22:51
lessons have we learned so far from this
virus for instance I'm just looking at
00:22:55
a lot of the small businesses for
example did they really have back
00:23:00
a business plan to keep going in
00:23:01
a case like this or even families do they
have preparations at home family go bags
00:23:06
extra supplies at home so what lessons
have we learned Well I think back to the
00:23:11
time in the 19 fifties and 1960 s.
00:23:15
When there were fears of nuclear war and
school children practiced ducking beneath
00:23:21
their desks that as if
that would be helpful in
00:23:24
a nuclear war but people bought on shelters
and put them in their backyard and they
00:23:30
stocked up on food and that kind of thing
I sense we're kind of going back to an
00:23:36
era where I think some sort of
00:23:38
a fear will hang over us rather like it
did back then I think this says kind of
00:23:45
shaken at least Americans out of whatever
00:23:48
a sense of complacency we may have had the
attacks of September 11th 2001 that j.j.
00:23:54
Was talking about also shook this out of
00:23:57
a complacency but that was 20. Years ago
and I think this whole kind of punitive
00:24:03
same thing I think
00:24:04
a lot of things that we've taken for granted
in the United States I'm sure this is
00:24:08
true in Europe as well I'm not
sure we can take the kind of
00:24:13
a carefree lifestyle that we've always had
to make we would have I don't think we
00:24:17
can take that for granted
anymore and in terms of
00:24:20
a lot of small businesses know most
of them don't have Paul back plants
00:24:25
a lot of businesses literally
survive hand to mouth
00:24:29
a lot of them I think they're going
to go under exposed to change
00:24:33
a lot of things about way we live and
play I think it's going to result in more
00:24:37
people telecommuting more people have
00:24:40
a long distance education all sorts of
things that are going to change well that
00:24:46
have been changing and I think this
crisis will simply accelerate seventy's
00:24:50
preexisting changes said
00:24:52
a how do you see the new normal Yeah Kim
what you said earlier about this perhaps
00:24:57
stretching out over maybe 18 months is I
think spot on and what Paul said as well
00:25:03
is right down the middle on the
people not just here in the u.s.
00:25:06
But around the world probably ought to look
at the. A long term scenario this great
00:25:12
from what I've heard from medical
professionals from intelligence officials and
00:25:17
from corporate experts as well and the
interesting part about this is that it comes
00:25:23
most likely in waves across this country
at least it'll probably happen in ways you
00:25:29
know it's not going to be approved week
scenario is not going to be 2 months today
00:25:33
it's probably going to happen in
00:25:34
a way that is essential there are many
people may have had this and didn't even
00:25:38
know it you know the symptoms are said to
be mild to moderate among some people but
00:25:43
there are 205 that in the us and we can
think of this similar to what we saw
00:25:50
that during the 911 crisis everything tends
to that we were warned about terrorism
00:25:56
then some people ignoring
00:25:58
a lot of people acted on. Already pandemics
made about them people have enjoyed the
00:26:04
movie people have ignored the warning so
I think there are other people talking
00:26:09
about preparations and here we are we're
away now and this is what we're going to
00:26:14
have you know what a days weeks
months and you know perhaps even
00:26:18
a year or more. We're not going to be able
to do the things that we did before for
00:26:24
a good while so people should have those
plans and Corey They should also prepare
00:26:29
for what we don't know and how did you
do that you do that by keeping your ears
00:26:33
open and your eyes open and remembering
that this whole business about hygiene is
00:26:40
key you know washing your hands and
things like their stuff is he right now
00:26:45
especially with your with it so
people are going to have to pay
00:26:48
a lot more it's not just what they see
went on but what they do out in public and
00:26:52
realize that this is going to be
a situation that may take quite
00:26:56
a while as well we're going to end our
program on that note I want to thank my 2

Etienne Charles man task man at the sound
of great thank you very much and tell me
00:34:24
about growing up and what you learned as
00:34:27
a musician growing up in Trinidad so
growing going through and I was really
00:34:32
a blessing it was extremely interesting
especially not often living in the u.s.
00:34:37
For so long the c.m.
00:34:39
Seeing all people grow up have seen that
some of the differences. In my family
00:34:43
music was always associated with dancing
always so any time the record player was
00:34:48
on. Somebody would be chipping
around the house when I was
00:34:52
a baby my mother would always come home
from work and she says that I would become
00:34:58
until she put music on my family
everybody played music and I was
00:35:02
a play quadrille guitar
bottle a school. Made
00:35:08
a difference from the play still panoply
still by my father pleased to have I'm on
00:35:11
complete steel bar. So it was always at
Christmas time specifically there's always
00:35:17
like
00:35:17
a bottomless boom jam going to the end
line be instruments it might be the record
00:35:21
player playing and people playing along
and singing and dancing you know I have
00:35:25
a different friend from Puerto Rico who
is musician and at Christmas time they
00:35:29
would always join these what are called
Piron that is how I got in doing Aguinaldo
00:35:32
music playing for people
bring out cookie dough
00:35:35
a little holiday drink and people just
care all night long would you do the same
00:35:40
kind of thing we have a big a
very similar cause of except
00:35:42
a cold Purana we call it
part around with a g.
00:35:45
In the air and it's the same thing you move
from house to house play and it's only
00:35:49
a lot of quater was guitar box bass
mandolin flutes and vocalists in the most
00:35:53
important part is you sing in the bottom
that it's so that's all they use in
00:35:56
a ceremony you go to
somebody's selves and you say
00:35:58
a sailor now then they let you weigh in
and then you sing some more and you think
00:36:02
Sean stop so they feed
you you know there's
00:36:04
a saying lot of love the Lord
that we get something. It's
00:36:08
a song about and then you go or
lonely you know it used to be
00:36:11
a house to house tradition so it
became of will be called upon
00:36:15
a new rule for most of the people
that you've been at one house. I'm
00:36:18
a long way if you get millet in
00:36:19
a Eventually you know as this huge mass
of people will move from house to house
00:36:25
very neighborhood viable and then you
have other great traditions in Trinidad
00:36:30
having a Carneval and
00:36:32
a very big and you know what did you
learn musically from playing in carnival
00:36:37
playing steel bands you know it seems that
00:36:40
a lot of jazz musicians
that grew up in the u.s.
00:36:43
Never connect the music their learning
with the dance tradition go on
00:36:49
a plane in the field by if the if the rhythm
section the groove it people that say
00:36:54
so so most importantly you know maintain
that to keep good to get good to
00:37:01
be good so you look up people's all people
all these top and if in the whole By
00:37:05
understand by a face to
plan a group which is
00:37:07
a bilingual play and then you know 120
people we want everybody's marking time we
00:37:12
want time with so even when we're not
playing any music you have you know hey at
00:37:18
200 sometimes 300 feet back and you feel
in the stable so it's just told your bar
00:37:23
energy about. Exchanging the energy
from the. Audience one of the most
00:37:30
important because you're. On the road to
role playing so to have rhythm is what's
00:37:36
driving people to keep moving I mean
you people. Sometimes 20 miles.
00:37:44
You know you've got to
keep. Going if you think.
00:37:54
Through what brought. A lot of this music
00:38:01
you were going to miss whether it keeps
them driving and you feel that still in the
00:38:05
music that you're playing. For what I have
what I have my music is very important
00:38:11
about like. Well maybe we can hear it in
the next 2 now I want to get the guys back
00:38:16
up and we're going to do 1st
next. We're going to do
00:38:21
a. Redo.
00:38:28
On this old. Fantastic.
00:41:11
Oh.
00:41:38
Oh.
00:47:26
The to. The I'm.
00:47:34
Plenty.
00:47:47
Plenty.
00:48:07
The I'm.
00:48:54
The I'm.
00:49:26
Can Charles love that tune what was that
last time you did and you know those twins
00:49:32
oh so to my role about these little
goblin like creatures This is
00:49:37
a part of the Caribbean foreclosures
and specifically the Africa real focal
00:49:40
traditional story is that when
00:49:43
a child dies before having been baptized
they become of the way. That's the law and
00:49:49
. The thing about it the way it
is of the way in which alone
00:49:54
a hot cup of coffee and
his feet to ice into
00:49:58
a backwards gust the trickle of weight and
so when they walk one way you go another
00:50:03
way to look at for them so they annoy you
while you normal with. This silly primes
00:50:08
to type cards is. And you have twins and
you have the story of the Lambs in many
00:50:13
different cultures you have called balloons
that's the translation of the Web you
00:50:20
know in Spanish because they're called
do and be you know leprechauns all these
00:50:24
things are different foods of the same story
and so this is the Caribbean was sort
00:50:28
of in this simple pranksters you know one
of the great things in your music is you
00:50:33
are drawing on
00:50:34
a whole sort of pan Caribbean traditions
grooves from all sorts of countries
00:50:41
and you know a lot of times the u.s.
00:50:43
People say oh well you know play
00:50:45
a Latin beat and there are there are hundreds
thousands of different Latin rhythms
00:50:50
out there and there are so many
different Caribbean written such
00:50:53
a difference between what you get in the
Dominican Republic what you get in in
00:50:58
Haiti and it's just the other side of the
island right and how do you go about
00:51:02
trying to you know keep the flavor of
distinct rhythms and then mix them with other
00:51:08
rhythms that they might not necessarily
go with for me the way with them works I
00:51:14
try to find similarities between different
regions in terms of the rhythms so
00:51:21
so for instance with the winds which we
just played. The driving. Wrong that I
00:51:27
worded based on is actually
00:51:28
a more ranking of them when you have public
took me via group works very well on
00:51:33
Calypso as well so on the bridge we go to
Calypso So if you think about it strictly
00:51:39
from
00:51:39
a ethnomusicology. Point is you've gone
from Trinidad to the Dominican Republic but
00:51:46
in terms of sound the grooves blamed
for the well and then you blend it so
00:51:51
seamlessly with American jazz as well on
your most recent record Creole saw you do
00:51:57
the phoniest monk to Green Chimneys and
then you think that was a tune that was
00:52:01
a calypso tune when it was originally
written I thought you know it means it's
00:52:05
funny you say that because to
me that melody you listen to
00:52:08
a melody by itself bop bop bop bop
but oh yeah so me that's that's
00:52:14
a drum part alone Calypso or something of
00:52:16
a calling to play it would play on
will play oh so I'm Monk's music is.
00:52:24
Is definitely Caribbean influence
you know the names of his tools
00:52:28
a bench just played by just one is above
all beat us by was from via which means
00:52:33
you know because they come on over. His
bones and so strong just the way he
00:52:38
interprets most of these was that's he's
on another level Well I'd love to do
00:52:43
something with you maybe one of these tunes
where you blend Calypso with kind of
00:52:49
maybe traditional jazz harmonic
form the rhythm changes you get
00:52:54
a great tune called doing the thing on the
record list allowing one doing the thing
00:52:58
is
00:52:58
a tune I wrote in tribute to Blue Angel he
won his album The thing to do and it was
00:53:04
very influential on me having to Korea.
So be rolled out soon after them
00:53:11
changes based on George
Gershwin's out of the rhythm what
00:53:14
a calypso melody and the Calypso me antacid
Well let's get the guys up and give it
00:53:18
a try and look at the end Charles.
00:56:54
Now that was fun I was shocked for its
part on tenor saxophone Taylor I'd stay on
00:56:59
piano then Williams on the bass John Davis
on the drums and of course on trumpet Mr
00:57:05
Etienne Charles My name's Eric Felten and
I hope you'll join us again for more good
00:57:10
music on beyond category.

course the biggest story of around the
globe right now is the corona virus which
00:03:59
continues. Spread in various parts of the
world cases are now being reported even
00:04:03
in Africa here in the us the state of
California has been shut down by the
00:04:08
government and hopes of stopping the
spread of the virus while the u.s.
00:04:12
Centers for Disease Control that myths
that much of co that 19 remains
00:04:16
a mystery that corona virus has been around
for decades and recently from June 24th
00:04:22
teen through July 2017 there
were 39 $1558.00 cases of
00:04:28
a positive strain of Corona
just here in the u.s.
00:04:31
Which is an average of $13196.00 cases
during that timeframe presently some
00:04:38
parts of the world experience in
00:04:40
a surge of the virus Well so far 86000
people have recovered from covert 19 what
00:04:46
j.j. We have dealt with various
viruses in the past h one
00:04:50
n one SARS murderers Ebola the Hong Kong
flu of the swine flu and back in the early
00:04:56
1900 a flu epidemic that actually
initiated here in the u.s.
00:05:01
But was known worldwide as the Spanish flu
which killed hundreds of thousands of
00:05:06
people worldwide So what are your thoughts
on why this fire is has caused panic and
00:05:11
fear here and the year 2020 there in
my opinion care more or 3 elements.
00:05:19
Because. There is the way in which
it was responded to early on and
00:05:26
then. We are so globally connected are
all contributing factors to what is
00:05:32
blown up in the water when you're looking
at what took place when people started to
00:05:38
grieve. In late December and it was
00:05:42
a record year that. People started to
figure out something was going on there
00:05:47
people or well. Realize just what could
happen flights were still coming out of
00:05:55
the. Internet for several weeks after that
and it was there. Clear probably by the
00:06:02
early part of January that that was blowing
up into something that the world the
00:06:06
devil seen before I don't believe the world
was prepared for anything like this and
00:06:11
I think the key thank you again is the
global connectivity here that has triggered
00:06:17
this worldwide pandemic so quickly because
when you think about it this all started
00:06:22
in late December as I mentioned that look
where we are down in the barge and you
00:06:27
know there are 246000 cases of this and
it shows no signs of abating at least in
00:06:33
this part of the world China is trying
to study right now it's not according to
00:06:38
what they say and it's not clear that we
completely every time we hear from them is
00:06:43
saying that there were no new cases if
that's the case and Greg but many people are
00:06:48
worried about whether or not we can believe
what they're saying about this also
00:06:51
Jay-Jay not everyone seems to be panicking
over this virus we're being shown videos
00:06:56
and photographs of people and socialize
settings still such as the hundreds of
00:07:01
beachgoers in Florida who are undergoing
a spring break also a family in the u.s.
00:07:06
State of New Jersey they lost 3
family members to cope and 19 after
00:07:10
a family gatherings so why do you think
people still are not heeding the warnings
00:07:15
and complying with the government regarding
social distancing Tim I think that the
00:07:20
time we live that I've spoken with people
who are experts in communications aside
00:07:26
from the media I'm talking about corporate
and private sector communications and
00:07:31
many different types of communications
even social media communications and what
00:07:36
they have said to me is this is plain and
simple people have gotten used to being
00:07:42
able to access what they want to hear when
they want to hear things that they are
00:07:48
not necessarily interested
in saving or that this is
00:07:51
a different situation and here's why yesterday
there are about 9000 plus cases it's
00:07:57
7 30 in the morning here in the u.s.
00:07:59
To. There 14000 yesterday there
were about 13000 to Durham and 7
00:08:06
in the morning today there are 16000
so what this means is that the u.s.
00:08:12
Veteran rate is growing faster than that
in Germany and it's probably going to move
00:08:19
through many and even have to run by the
early part of next week and Italy and.
00:08:26
The us and
00:08:27
a part of it with that that the people
either don't know don't care or are not
00:08:33
taking appropriate because
they're not sure what to do and
00:08:36
a lot of. People simply as I mentioned
before ignore what they've been told and it
00:08:43
a case of not knowing exactly what to do
Yes this takes me back our coverage here
00:08:48
the Voice of America of the Ebola virus
in West Africa back on 2014 where
00:08:53
a lot of the spread was due to people
basically not following direction people also
00:08:59
getting mixed communication they're getting
from unification from health agencies
00:09:04
from humanitarian agencies
the show the c.d.c.
00:09:08
And yet they are also getting information
from their local you know village chiefs
00:09:13
who are telling them sometimes giving them
the opposite of what they would being
00:09:17
told by the c.d.c.
00:09:19
So I don't think that would be the case
here Phil but I think it's mostly of what
00:09:23
you're saying people just say I'm going
to live my life the way I want to I don't
00:09:26
need the government to tell me what to do
so I think it's more of that than getting
00:09:31
mixed signals Yeah that is true and this
is the here's the problem with people
00:09:36
decide to take that approach then they
may live birth order because like your
00:09:42
government or the government in the world
the leaders of the government are. The
00:09:49
people who are believed to be in populations
around the world and here's why this
00:09:54
is an airborne transmitted type of virus
and it can happen. Anyone And we've
00:10:01
noted we've any situation where people who
either been on an airplane people who
00:10:07
are in buildings people who. Are out in
public places forward think your government
00:10:14
security every day. That their
grandparents. Their people
00:10:21
to getting sick by being sick and by
the by are one thing that struck me as
00:10:26
important is. That from The New York Governor
Andrew Cuomo on Thursday and he said
00:10:33
. People have the virus and we don't know
who they are because we can't have them
00:10:39
but the most telling thing he said to
me was found that people had that virus
00:10:45
before we knew about it and that many of
them have recovered on their own but that
00:10:52
can be in one of our what the problem
well before it became publicly known and
00:10:58
there may be people struggling right now
so this is the key thing to be to be
00:11:03
looking at I think for those people who
are reluctant to pay attention is that it
00:11:08
may already be in your neighborhood may
already be in your home but you need to pay
00:11:12
attention because the result could
be problematic exactly now j.j.
00:11:17
We do have all brand us on the line with
us now we had some technical difficulties
00:11:21
earlier and we're now able to bring him
and this is Paul Brandis White House
00:11:25
reporter for West Wing reports and
00:11:27
a columnist for USA Today thank you Paul
I'm so glad you could join us or you thank
00:11:32
you good now fall for you here in the u.s.
00:11:35
The Trump administration is taking measures
to not only combat the spread of the
00:11:40
virus but to help people economically so
that the economy does not collapse from
00:11:44
this some of these measures include
00:11:46
a coronavirus stimulus plan to provide
people with cash to help small businesses
00:11:52
stay in business and to prevent home
foreclosures he's also deploying to hospital
00:11:57
ships one on the East Coast and one. On
the West Coast and also he may enable the
00:12:03
Defense Production Act So how so far how
do you think President Trump is handling
00:12:08
the pandemic Well according
to him he's doing
00:12:11
a great job but the critics of course point
to the fact that we are well behind in
00:12:18
testing here's kind of an interesting story
the 1st confirmed case of coronavirus
00:12:24
was confirmed in both South Korea and the
United States on that ferry same day as
00:12:31
South Korea has raced ahead with massive
testing of its people they have lowered
00:12:36
the curve for bend the curve that's
sort of the phrase that's being
00:12:41
a use chair but the United States in that
regard is way behind there are shortages
00:12:47
testing kits there are shortages of maps
there are shortages of all kinds of
00:12:53
medical gear all sorts of things this is
that me saying that this is governors
00:12:58
around the nation who say that this is
Hospital officials around the country who
00:13:03
are saying that so that's sort of the
situation on the ground and as this virus
00:13:09
spread the number of cases is growing
quite rapidly I think is going to come
00:13:14
a time when the shortages become quite
apparent judge of your thoughts on this I
00:13:19
know you previously mentioned the lack of
testing in the beginning yeah exactly and
00:13:24
you know we were seeing the results of
that one of the things that took place as
00:13:29
this started was we were seeing in some
places like romantic rise in the number of
00:13:34
cases in other places there were minimal
there was minimal reporting even yesterday
00:13:39
you look at Russia Russia was reporting
something like 150 some cases of the
00:13:45
coronavirus and that was only 10 more than
the day before one of us exploding on
00:13:50
the western border and
girls that of course was
00:13:53
a gigantic in China from the very beginning
Russia which sits in between them has
00:13:58
not had more. A relatively few cases so I
thought if they can be gotten from prison
00:14:04
people about that and out. They say they
believe the devil that is whining about it
00:14:09
because it's
00:14:10
a governmental thing relating to the
Clintons insisting getting who want to serve
00:14:16
and then it's about the inability
to get care they can't get care so
00:14:22
a part of what I'm hearing it will help
from some of the folks at the speaking with
00:14:26
its doctors and have been told the inquest
to find the cases Okolona by was that
00:14:32
they had pneumonia in order to none
disturb the political kerning and
00:14:39
old girls who I need to say that on
not being able to tap kids but it's
00:14:46
a problem not just here in the us but in
other places as well and on that note
00:14:50
we're going to take
00:14:51

00:15:16
panel j.j. Grey national security
correspondent for w t o p
00:15:20
n host of Target USA and Paul Brandis White
House reporter for West Wing reports
00:15:25
and
00:15:25
a columnist for USA Today I'm going to throw
this question out to both of you what
00:15:31
would it mean for people
if the government declares
00:15:33
a coronavirus national emergency j.j.
00:15:37
Well what it would mean and we should take
this very seriously I would stare into
00:15:42
v.o.a.
00:15:42
Building on September 11th 2001 and
for those who remember or Ok history
00:15:49
of that day they know that plane that
crashed in some kinds of pain it was
00:15:54
supposedly destined for the u.s.
00:15:56
Capitol and for those who know
anything about the b.o.h.
00:15:59
Building. Court is building literally
right across the street from the u.s.
00:16:03
Capitol I can recall walking out the
door and seeing the streets swarmed with
00:16:09
blankets you'd be with blue lights in a
panic I can also remember probably maybe
00:16:15
a half an hour 40 minutes later walking up
to the roof of that building and seeing
00:16:20
the Pentagon on fire and of course knowing
that 2 towers can't be hitting New York
00:16:24
the whole country was in a bit of
00:16:27
a panic so what this suggests to doing
right now is that somebody believes what
00:16:33
they need to do in order
to deal with this on
00:16:36
a national scale but what has to be done
if the same thing that were done later
00:16:41
that very same day I remember walking down
the street independent there was not one
00:16:46
car in sight there were only military
vehicles on the side and people were told
00:16:51
walk in the center of the street and they
got down there away from that this was on
00:16:55
the set of the streets what I'm getting
at here is they're going to be some very
00:16:59
strict circumstances and London is
going to lock down shortly at least on
00:17:03
a partial basis for this weekend it's not
clear how long that kind of activity they
00:17:08
come to the u.s.
00:17:09
That kind of activity may need people
needing permission slips if you will to be
00:17:14
out on the streets it also may mean people
being cracked by the government that
00:17:19
know that several governments overseas are
already doing that using location data
00:17:23
from smartphones and other devices those
kinds of things could come to the u.s.
00:17:28
If it gets to that point and based on where
we are right now and again mentioned
00:17:33
earlier can people not heeding the advice
going in and some stimulant to prevent
00:17:38
more infection that may be a
done deal here in the u.s.
00:17:42
. And also Paul your thoughts on this that
I mentioned earlier that the governor of
00:17:47
California shut the state of California
down meaning that people can only go out
00:17:52
for essentials such as food items or arm
medicine they can go out to exercise I
00:17:58
understand your thoughts on that. Well we're
already seeing some of the curfews in
00:18:03
place for example in the state of
New Jersey which is on the u.s.
00:18:08
East coast quite particular state
of the governor there has ordered
00:18:12
a statewide therapy or you could only be
out in the burgeon see if we go into the
00:18:18
grocery store or something and I think
those are beginning to pop up in other
00:18:23
places but I want to comment
on something that j.j.
00:18:27
Said very interesting point about 2001
that was now nearly 20 years ago hard
00:18:34
to believe that so much time has passed
but what I think is interesting between
00:18:39
then and now is that back then there was
00:18:42
a lot more confidence
and trust in the u.s.
00:18:46
Government to do the right things people
had trust and faith in the government to
00:18:52
do what was right I think that is
not so much the case now we had
00:18:57
a big economic crisis here in
2007 through 2009 and polls
00:19:04
show that ever since then the trust that
Americans have in government to do the
00:19:10
right things has
00:19:11
a road ahead and I think that has
remained so we enter this crisis with
00:19:16
a lot less trust and faith in government
to do the right thing frankly and also it
00:19:22
has not helped that doesn't trump has said
things in the White House briefing room
00:19:28
but frankly aren't true about how there's
testing kits available for every one of
00:19:34
the numbers are going down and so forth
so in terms of 1st thing the government
00:19:39
there are all kinds of reasons to support
of Syria that people simply don't have
00:19:44
faith in the government to
do the right thing here in
00:19:47
a crisis like this that is
only getting bigger that is
00:19:51
a problem so I think that's something that
we have to keep in mind as well and also
00:19:55
just want to go back and
look at China just for
00:19:59
a 2nd where. It has been reported in Mohan
China that this virus originated and
00:20:05
there have been reports that China
is saying and blaming even the u.s.
00:20:10
For manufacturing this virus What do you
all thoughts on this yeah you know there's
00:20:15
been discussions about this being
00:20:17
a bioengineered virus from the very beginning
and there been even some prominent
00:20:23
people including the u.s.
00:20:24
Senate again theory in
public that this was
00:20:29
a bioengineered this virus but he said that
it was trying to get it now so you know
00:20:36
saying among others that
it's something the u.s.
00:20:39
But you know you have
to think about this in
00:20:41
a logical way if you look at what this is
done to China's economy it's basically
00:20:47
delivered a blow to it
but it's going to take
00:20:49
a while to recover from Henry
to talk about what the u.s.
00:20:54
Is facing and this president is facing
00:20:57
a real lead from here and the way this is
going this isn't going well for him or
00:21:03
for the the u.s.
00:21:04
For protecting them and I don't think that
anybody that leaks of anything or create
00:21:09
anything like this to turn leases that
is going to do it without some kind of
00:21:13
consultation or term front to how it's
going to impact them personally at home
00:21:19
unless of course this with term that
scientists that nobody knows about I don't buy
00:21:24
that conspiracy theory please what about
you Paul I mean if you look at all the
00:21:27
damage that has been done in China an
awful lot of people killed their economy
00:21:33
taking just a major hit over the
past couple months these kind of
00:21:38
a virus is in pandemics have been
00:21:40
a part of human history going back
to the very beginning it was only
00:21:45
a century ago in fact that we had influenza
that killed millions of people around
00:21:52
the world and I've been talking to various
experts on these kind of change who say
00:21:57
look even when we get a grip on. As for
a virus and it's important to note that
00:22:03
a vaccine they say is probably at least a
year away or perhaps even the wall girl
00:22:08
a year and
00:22:09
a half because one date that they're talking
about we're going to be other viruses
00:22:14
and other pandemics that pop up from time
to time as well and some people fear in
00:22:19
fact they could be even worse than this
one if you can believe but so this theory
00:22:24
that you know some mad scientist in the lab
did something and that got out of hand
00:22:31
if I could be blunt kind of crackpot theories
that pop up and they read around the
00:22:36
Internet and I'm sure there are people who
believe those kind of things but I just
00:22:40
don't think it's true what it's estimated
that the virus outbreak could go on for
00:22:45
as long as 18 months so if so what
what The New Normal be like and what
00:22:51
lessons have we learned so far from this
virus for instance I'm just looking at
00:22:55
a lot of the small businesses for
example did they really have back
00:23:00
a business plan to keep going in
00:23:01
a case like this or even families do they
have preparations at home family go bags
00:23:06
extra supplies at home so what lessons
have we learned Well I think back to the
00:23:11
time in the 19 fifties and 1960 s.
00:23:15
When there were fears of nuclear war and
school children practiced ducking beneath
00:23:21
their desks that as if
that would be helpful in
00:23:24
a nuclear war but people bought on shelters
and put them in their backyard and they
00:23:30
stocked up on food and that kind of thing
I sense we're kind of going back to an
00:23:36
era where I think some sort of
00:23:38
a fear will hang over us rather like it
did back then I think this says kind of
00:23:45
shaken at least Americans out of whatever
00:23:48
a sense of complacency we may have had the
attacks of September 11th 2001 that j.j.
00:23:54
Was talking about also shook this out of
00:23:57
a complacency but that was 20. Years ago
and I think this whole kind of punitive
00:24:03
same thing I think
00:24:04
a lot of things that we've taken for granted
in the United States I'm sure this is
00:24:08
true in Europe as well I'm not
sure we can take the kind of
00:24:13
a carefree lifestyle that we've always had
to make we would have I don't think we
00:24:17
can take that for granted
anymore and in terms of
00:24:20
a lot of small businesses know most
of them don't have Paul back plants
00:24:25
a lot of businesses literally
survive hand to mouth
00:24:29
a lot of them I think they're going
to go under exposed to change
00:24:33
a lot of things about way we live and
play I think it's going to result in more
00:24:37
people telecommuting more people have
00:24:40
a long distance education all sorts of
things that are going to change well that
00:24:46
have been changing and I think this
crisis will simply accelerate seventy's
00:24:50
preexisting changes said
00:24:52
a how do you see the new normal Yeah Kim
what you said earlier about this perhaps
00:24:57
stretching out over maybe 18 months is I
think spot on and what Paul said as well
00:25:03
is right down the middle on the
people not just here in the u.s.
00:25:06
But around the world probably ought to look
at the. A long term scenario this great
00:25:12
from what I've heard from medical
professionals from intelligence officials and
00:25:17
from corporate experts as well and the
interesting part about this is that it comes
00:25:23
most likely in waves across this country
at least it'll probably happen in ways you
00:25:29
know it's not going to be approved week
scenario is not going to be 2 months today
00:25:33
it's probably going to happen in
00:25:34
a way that is essential there are many
people may have had this and didn't even
00:25:38
know it you know the symptoms are said to
be mild to moderate among some people but
00:25:43
there are 205 that in the us and we can
think of this similar to what we saw
00:25:50
that during the 911 crisis everything tends
to that we were warned about terrorism
00:25:56
then some people ignoring
00:25:58
a lot of people acted on. Already pandemics
made about them people have enjoyed the
00:26:04
movie people have ignored the warning so
I think there are other people talking
00:26:09
about preparations and here we are we're
away now and this is what we're going to
00:26:14
have you know what a days weeks
months and you know perhaps even
00:26:18
a year or more. We're not going to be able
to do the things that we did before for
00:26:24
a good while so people should have those
plans and Corey They should also prepare
00:26:29
for what we don't know and how did you
do that you do that by keeping your ears
00:26:33
open and your eyes open and remembering
that this whole business about hygiene is
00:26:40
key you know washing your hands and
things like their stuff is he right now
00:26:45
especially with your with it so
people are going to have to pay
00:26:48
a lot more it's not just what they see
went on but what they do out in public and
00:26:52
realize that this is going to be
a situation that may take quite
00:26:56
a while as well we're going to end our
program on that note I want to thank my 2

Etienne Charles man task man at the sound
of great thank you very much and tell me
00:34:24
about growing up and what you learned as
00:34:27
a musician growing up in Trinidad so
growing going through and I was really
00:34:32
a blessing it was extremely interesting
especially not often living in the u.s.
00:34:37
For so long the c.m.
00:34:39
Seeing all people grow up have seen that
some of the differences. In my family
00:34:43
music was always associated with dancing
always so any time the record player was
00:34:48
on. Somebody would be chipping
around the house when I was
00:34:52
a baby my mother would always come home
from work and she says that I would become
00:34:58
until she put music on my family
everybody played music and I was
00:35:02
a play quadrille guitar
bottle a school. Made
00:35:08
a difference from the play still panoply
still by my father pleased to have I'm on
00:35:11
complete steel bar. So it was always at
Christmas time specifically there's always
00:35:17
like
00:35:17
a bottomless boom jam going to the end
line be instruments it might be the record
00:35:21
player playing and people playing along
and singing and dancing you know I have
00:35:25
a different friend from Puerto Rico who
is musician and at Christmas time they
00:35:29
would always join these what are called
Piron that is how I got in doing Aguinaldo
00:35:32
music playing for people
bring out cookie dough
00:35:35
a little holiday drink and people just
care all night long would you do the same
00:35:40
kind of thing we have a big a
very similar cause of except
00:35:42
a cold Purana we call it
part around with a g.
00:35:45
In the air and it's the same thing you move
from house to house play and it's only
00:35:49
a lot of quater was guitar box bass
mandolin flutes and vocalists in the most
00:35:53
important part is you sing in the bottom
that it's so that's all they use in
00:35:56
a ceremony you go to
somebody's selves and you say
00:35:58
a sailor now then they let you weigh in
and then you sing some more and you think
00:36:02
Sean stop so they feed
you you know there's
00:36:04
a saying lot of love the Lord
that we get something. It's
00:36:08
a song about and then you go or
lonely you know it used to be
00:36:11
a house to house tradition so it
became of will be called upon
00:36:15
a new rule for most of the people
that you've been at one house. I'm
00:36:18
a long way if you get millet in
00:36:19
a Eventually you know as this huge mass
of people will move from house to house
00:36:25
very neighborhood viable and then you
have other great traditions in Trinidad
00:36:30
having a Carneval and
00:36:32
a very big and you know what did you
learn musically from playing in carnival
00:36:37
playing steel bands you know it seems that
00:36:40
a lot of jazz musicians
that grew up in the u.s.
00:36:43
Never connect the music their learning
with the dance tradition go on
00:36:49
a plane in the field by if the if the rhythm
section the groove it people that say
00:36:54
so so most importantly you know maintain
that to keep good to get good to
00:37:01
be good so you look up people's all people
all these top and if in the whole By
00:37:05
understand by a face to
plan a group which is
00:37:07
a bilingual play and then you know 120
people we want everybody's marking time we
00:37:12
want time with so even when we're not
playing any music you have you know hey at
00:37:18
200 sometimes 300 feet back and you feel
in the stable so it's just told your bar
00:37:23
energy about. Exchanging the energy
from the. Audience one of the most
00:37:30
important because you're. On the road to
role playing so to have rhythm is what's
00:37:36
driving people to keep moving I mean
you people. Sometimes 20 miles.
00:37:44
You know you've got to
keep. Going if you think.
00:37:54
Through what brought. A lot of this music
00:38:01
you were going to miss whether it keeps
them driving and you feel that still in the
00:38:05
music that you're playing. For what I have
what I have my music is very important
00:38:11
about like. Well maybe we can hear it in
the next 2 now I want to get the guys back
00:38:16
up and we're going to do 1st
next. We're going to do
00:38:21
a. Redo.
00:38:28
On this old. Fantastic.
00:41:11
Oh.
00:41:38
Oh.
00:47:26
The to. The I'm.
00:47:34
Plenty.
00:47:47
Plenty.
00:48:07
The I'm.
00:48:54
The I'm.
00:49:26
Can Charles love that tune what was that
last time you did and you know those twins
00:49:32
oh so to my role about these little
goblin like creatures This is
00:49:37
a part of the Caribbean foreclosures
and specifically the Africa real focal
00:49:40
traditional story is that when
00:49:43
a child dies before having been baptized
they become of the way. That's the law and
00:49:49
. The thing about it the way it
is of the way in which alone
00:49:54
a hot cup of coffee and
his feet to ice into
00:49:58
a backwards gust the trickle of weight and
so when they walk one way you go another
00:50:03
way to look at for them so they annoy you
while you normal with. This silly primes
00:50:08
to type cards is. And you have twins and
you have the story of the Lambs in many
00:50:13
different cultures you have called balloons
that's the translation of the Web you
00:50:20
know in Spanish because they're called
do and be you know leprechauns all these
00:50:24
things are different foods of the same story
and so this is the Caribbean was sort
00:50:28
of in this simple pranksters you know one
of the great things in your music is you
00:50:33
are drawing on
00:50:34
a whole sort of pan Caribbean traditions
grooves from all sorts of countries
00:50:41
and you know a lot of times the u.s.
00:50:43
People say oh well you know play
00:50:45
a Latin beat and there are there are hundreds
thousands of different Latin rhythms
00:50:50
out there and there are so many
different Caribbean written such
00:50:53
a difference between what you get in the
Dominican Republic what you get in in
00:50:58
Haiti and it's just the other side of the
island right and how do you go about
00:51:02
trying to you know keep the flavor of
distinct rhythms and then mix them with other
00:51:08
rhythms that they might not necessarily
go with for me the way with them works I
00:51:14
try to find similarities between different
regions in terms of the rhythms so
00:51:21
so for instance with the winds which we
just played. The driving. Wrong that I
00:51:27
worded based on is actually
00:51:28
a more ranking of them when you have public
took me via group works very well on
00:51:33
Calypso as well so on the bridge we go to
Calypso So if you think about it strictly
00:51:39
from
00:51:39
a ethnomusicology. Point is you've gone
from Trinidad to the Dominican Republic but
00:51:46
in terms of sound the grooves blamed
for the well and then you blend it so
00:51:51
seamlessly with American jazz as well on
your most recent record Creole saw you do
00:51:57
the phoniest monk to Green Chimneys and
then you think that was a tune that was
00:52:01
a calypso tune when it was originally
written I thought you know it means it's
00:52:05
funny you say that because to
me that melody you listen to
00:52:08
a melody by itself bop bop bop bop
but oh yeah so me that's that's
00:52:14
a drum part alone Calypso or something of
00:52:16
a calling to play it would play on
will play oh so I'm Monk's music is.
00:52:24
Is definitely Caribbean influence
you know the names of his tools
00:52:28
a bench just played by just one is above
all beat us by was from via which means
00:52:33
you know because they come on over. His
bones and so strong just the way he
00:52:38
interprets most of these was that's he's
on another level Well I'd love to do
00:52:43
something with you maybe one of these tunes
where you blend Calypso with kind of
00:52:49
maybe traditional jazz harmonic
form the rhythm changes you get
00:52:54
a great tune called doing the thing on the
record list allowing one doing the thing
00:52:58
is
00:52:58
a tune I wrote in tribute to Blue Angel he
won his album The thing to do and it was
00:53:04
very influential on me having to Korea.
So be rolled out soon after them
00:53:11
changes based on George
Gershwin's out of the rhythm what
00:53:14
a calypso melody and the Calypso me antacid
Well let's get the guys up and give it
00:53:18
a try and look at the end Charles.
00:56:54
Now that was fun I was shocked for its
part on tenor saxophone Taylor I'd stay on
00:56:59
piano then Williams on the bass John Davis
on the drums and of course on trumpet Mr
00:57:05
Etienne Charles My name's Eric Felten and
I hope you'll join us again for more good
00:57:10
music on beyond category.
