Hello again and welcome to another
edition of jazz America here on v.o.a.
00:02:59
Why this is rush Davis your host and sadly
we must mark the passing of one of the
00:03:04
greatest pianists in all of jazz history
and look quite tired has died at the age
00:03:10
of 81 and we'll celebrate him
on this edition of the program.
00:03:21
I certainly don't have time to give you all
the details of the brilliant career in
00:03:26
the life of McCoy Tyner who
died at the age of 81 just
00:03:31
a week or so ago he was from
Philadelphia one of the great jazz
00:03:38
centers alongside New Orleans and New
York and Chicago and Los Angeles and San
00:03:44
Francisco in the other big cities where
jazz flourished over the decades well McCoy
00:03:50
Tyner the left an incredible impression
on so many young pianists as he
00:03:57
became one of the main men of the modern
jazz era following the days of Dixie land
00:04:03
and that big band era and bebop and beyond
he certainly created with his forcible
00:04:09
way of playing which was forceful
but melodic at the same time
00:04:14
a brilliant style of making jazz on piano
and he probably was most famous and the
00:04:19
beginning of his career for his work with
the legendary John culturing quartet and
00:04:26
I'll give you some of that
music right now on albums like
00:04:30
a love supreme and my favorite things which
will give you now because I tire played

I've. Well here we are
at the end of March that
00:13:04
means April is right around the corner
and April is Jazz Appreciation Month and
00:13:11
even though jazz was born in the United
States of America it's now created and
00:13:15
celebrated worldwide case in point
the music you just heard from
00:13:21
a Danish vocalist Cindy EEG and the
Danish radio big band from the brand
00:13:27
new album we've just begun
with a song entitled to
00:13:32
a new day and in the face of all of the
adversity that the world is looking at
00:13:38
right now with this terrible corona virus
sweeping the globe I thought it might be
00:13:45
nice to hear a song with
00:13:46
a positive message and we'll try to give
you more of that as this edition of jazz
00:13:51
America continues and right now as we look
back on the life and career of the late
00:13:57
great McCoy Tyner passed away at the age
of 81 just days ago let's go back in time
00:14:04
and go to Norway for
00:14:07
a conversation backstage after one of McCoy
Tyner his performances there and get
00:14:12
a little bit more insight into his personal
life from his own perspective followed
00:14:18
by one of his most famous songs from his
own great book Tyner group and the album
00:14:24
the real McCoy from 1967 we'll
hear the song passion dads it is
00:14:30
a past law this is an awful lot and it's
back to all all of us of all people to
00:14:36
soar and I'm happy because
this is it true this is gives
00:14:39
a. I think the nation and the
world and I think it does have
00:14:43
a point for an art form to have
that much water and it makes
00:14:46
a true true up for. I think
00:14:50
a simple meal. That I was the most
beautiful he asked of the well you know
00:14:57
to. Be accepted at home I think just for
00:15:00
a point. But I think that all also as
important as if you're the one the world can
00:15:06
receive what he asked to
go and walk away from
00:15:09
a concert and sing well I feel better
than I did when I came in I think that's
00:15:13
right for me. Because
00:15:15
a citizen was for the music should do should
make one feel better and I predict it
00:15:20
will all feel better after we enjoy Passion
Dance from the late McCoy Tyner jazz

Thank you Mara and thank you all
00:28:58
for listening and loving jazz wherever you
are around the globe and by the way if

of the joys of jazz and tell folks how
00:29:10
they can hear jazz America real all embrace
the music together and make ourselves
00:29:16
feel better all around the globe
now let's turn to more music from
00:29:21
a quiet Tyner such
00:29:22
a versatile player he was delving in
everything from the Hard Bop to big band and
00:29:28
Latin jazz in 2008 he put together
00:29:32
a collection of songs from an album simply
titled guitars and he brought in the
00:29:39
folks like Derek Trucks Mark Rubio Bill
Frisell all great guitars to even Bale
00:29:45
a fleck on the banjo he
also included John Scofield
00:29:49
a modern master and they put together this
version of John Coltrane's classic Mr

00:39:09
You.
00:39:16
Very interesting wouldn't you say you were
probably listening to that song thinking
00:39:21
I know that voice but I've never heard
that song before well if you were thinking
00:39:28
that was needed
00:39:29
a Simone you are correct and we probably
haven't heard that before because it was
00:39:36
released in 1982 on
00:39:38
a very small French label Nina had
moved to France at that point in 1982
00:39:45
and the album came out just recently all
around the world so we've just enjoyed
00:39:51
a cut from father on my wings
00:39:54
a brand new quote unquote album from Nina
Simone and the song Liberian Calypso is
00:40:00
what you just heard now let's return back
00:40:03
a few years ago and enjoy more of an interview
backstage with McCoy Tyner in Norway
00:40:09
here on jazz America and we'll follow that
with the title cut from his debut solo
00:40:15
effort from 1961 inception when the
interviewer asked McCoy about the origins of
00:40:21
American jazz McCoy pointed back to Africa
for the Sea Org Also for the use of.
00:40:30
Like the many people at all except
that if I were away at the rest of the
00:40:37
African Flossy in the music hall. As is
obvious to me more involved with him back
00:40:44
to the spiritual health the blues and my
view that their disabilities are African
00:40:49
and lost and so are. I mean there are
many other things in the music to America
00:40:55
that are just about I think that's one of
the main elements that makes new is the
00:40:59
New This music is identity you know. I
think it actually you know it's different
00:41:05
from Africa from is about I think it. Is
definitely the weather today from last you

00:13:32
a new day and in the face of all of the
adversity that the world is looking at
00:13:38
right now with this terrible corona virus
sweeping the globe I thought it might be
00:13:45
nice to hear a song with
00:13:46
a positive message and we'll try to give
you more of that as this edition of jazz
00:13:51
America continues and right now as we look
back on the life and career of the late
00:13:57
great McCoy Tyner passed away at the age
of 81 just days ago let's go back in time
00:14:04
and go to Norway for
00:14:07
a conversation backstage after one of McCoy
Tyner his performances there and get
00:14:12
a little bit more insight into his personal
life from his own perspective followed
00:14:18
by one of his most famous songs from his
own great book Tyner group and the album
00:14:24
the real McCoy from 1967 we'll
hear the song passion dads it is
00:14:30
a past law this is an awful lot and it's
back to all all of us of all people to
00:14:36
soar and I'm happy because
this is it true this is gives
00:14:39
a. I think the nation and the
world and I think it does have
00:14:43
a point for an art form to have
that much water and it makes
00:14:46
a true true up for. I think
00:14:50
a simple meal. That I was the most
beautiful he asked of the well you know
00:14:57
to. Be accepted at home I think just for
00:15:00
a point. But I think that all also as
important as if you're the one the world can
00:15:06
receive what he asked to
go and walk away from
00:15:09
a concert and sing well I feel better
than I did when I came in I think that's
00:15:13
right for me. Because
00:15:15
a citizen was for the music should do should
make one feel better and I predict it
00:15:20
will all feel better after we enjoy Passion
Dance from the late McCoy Tyner jazz

of the joys of jazz and tell folks how
00:29:10

the music together and make ourselves
00:29:16
feel better all around the globe
now let's turn to more music from
00:29:21
a quiet Tyner such
00:29:22
a versatile player he was delving in
everything from the Hard Bop to big band and
00:29:28
Latin jazz in 2008 he put together
00:29:32
a collection of songs from an album simply
titled guitars and he brought in the
00:29:39
folks like Derek Trucks Mark Rubio Bill
Frisell all great guitars to even Bale
00:29:45
a fleck on the banjo he
also included John Scofield
00:29:49
a modern master and they put together this
version of John Coltrane's classic Mr

You.
00:39:16
Very interesting wouldn't you say you were
probably listening to that song thinking
00:39:21
I know that voice but I've never heard
that song before well if you were thinking
00:39:28
that was needed
00:39:29
a Simone you are correct and we probably
haven't heard that before because it was
00:39:36
released in 1982 on
00:39:38
a very small French label Nina had
moved to France at that point in 1982
00:39:45
and the album came out just recently all
around the world so we've just enjoyed
00:39:51
a cut from father on my wings
00:39:54
a brand new quote unquote album from Nina
Simone and the song Liberian Calypso is
00:40:00
what you just heard now let's return back
00:40:03
a few years ago and enjoy more of an interview
backstage with McCoy Tyner in Norway
00:40:09
here on jazz America and we'll follow that
with the title cut from his debut solo
00:40:15
effort from 1961 inception when the
interviewer asked McCoy about the origins of
00:40:21
American jazz McCoy pointed back to Africa
for the Sea Org Also for the use of.
00:40:30
Like the many people at all except
that if I were away at the rest of the
00:40:37
African Flossy in the music hall. As is
obvious to me more involved with him back
00:40:44
to the spiritual health the blues and my
view that their disabilities are African
00:40:49
and lost and so are. I mean there are
many other things in the music to America
00:40:55
that are just about I think that's one of
the main elements that makes new is the
00:40:59
New This music is identity you know. I
think it actually you know it's different
00:41:05
from Africa from is about I think it. Is
definitely the weather today from last you
