A tale of beleaguered idealism.
A Spanish republican agent arrives in 1937 Britain to find himself surrounded by fascists and sellouts. Good action and suspense with uniformly fine performances - although the tall, lanky, very American-accented Bacall seems transplanted from a Bogart film rather than a novel character. Francen, Paxinou and Lorre are suitably sinister.

A Republican veteran of the Spanish civil war goes to England to seek aid in defeating the fascist forces . We all know how well that worked out . Not a big fan of Charles Boyer but I have been in love w/ Lauren Bacall since first seeing "To Have and Have Not" . She is true to character as the Hard Boiled Dame with a soft heart, As a fan of film noir I'm accustomed to the protagonist being a tough capable guy here he is vulnerable and and seems to get set up to easily . She's sultry but doesn't simmer in this
