In the middle of the lockdown, in the everyday monotony, Erich Schall comes along and makes us happy quite casually, as if nothing were wrong, with a new album, the Mechanical Fable. Quasi out of nothing - or, to introduce into the musical theme, quasi out of a misty, enchanted old magic forest. The forest that parents always warn their children about, but that only makes it more attractive. It begins as a harmless excursion, a downtown cruise, aimlessly wandering. Where to, where only? Why not...

This is the second part of selected older works. "Dark inner aspects of toddy drinking" contains a collection of dark pieces that develop a suction effect due to their great density, at least if you listen to them appropriately loud or with headphones, and come from a phase of Svanns life that he only remembers darkly.

A new album, then. Seemingly casually screwed together from the wrist. Dominik doesn't make many words about it: "The tracks are (as usual) one-take recordings of the modular system, partly also with generative elements. Often carried by 2 modular CS-80 voices and almost beatless, the tracks on this album are rather minimalistic, emotional and intimate." This description is technically accurate, but of course does not do justice at all to the monumental sound and sense spaces of his...

Frustration, aggression, depression, resignation. In that order. But what next? Cynicism, nihilism, radicalism? Or the realisation that life sometimes just sucks, and that’s part of it? And then what? Just keep going, hoping it means something? The care of a cheerful, optimistic nihilism. If nothing matters, anything can be overloaded with meaning at will. This is what we need to work on. We take back the prerogative of interpretation and don’t leave it to all the idiots out there without a...

The title of the album refers of course to the novel by the Strugatzki brothers. But it is also the expression of the desperate realisation that the world is probably unsavable. The problems are obvious, everybody knows everything, but nobody is willing to do anything. We oscillate faster and faster between hysteria and agony, blind actionism and panic. And again and again we get fast and easy answers to complex questions with the certainty of a placebo. Clicktivism as a digital balm for the...

A huge guy with heavy glasses and a drop tuned electric guitar, a woman 10 feet tall, computer beats and synth basses. Post industrial beats, stoner bass loops, metal riffs and german lyrics. Guitars cannot be to loud, drum patterns never to stoical, bass licks never to dark, lyrics never to sealed. „Their songs are precise, concise in the best sense, and in use of the sometimes minimalistic means highly effective. And damn powerful. Even if their message is disenchanting, their sound gives...

For Freedom in these days, you not only have to fight and defend it. You also have to withstand freedom when things get tricky. As with tolerance, which is only interesting when it is permanently challenged and which inevitable has to leed to acceptance and not ignorance, as with this, freedom is only interesting, when it comes to claim its price and wants to sacrifice itself on the altar of a diffuse desire for more perceived security. Let’s face it: sacrificing freedom for more supposed...

Even though there was nothing really worth looking back on this year (2020), we didn't miss the opportunity to publish a small musical review of the year. Have fun and keep up the good work.

Here now, as promised, the second EP by Dominik Vogel. It is a bit more cryptic than Oasis, but that fits well to the self chosen theme and also in our strange times. As with Oasis, everything was recorded live in one go. This time with the special challenge that many of the elements were created generatively and an intervention of the "player" changes something, but the result is not predictable. Dominik gave us the following lines to accompany the recording: "What happens where...

Kind of Neo-Postrock, not by a band, though one might guess so, but by one Person alone: marco Trovatello. He formed a virtual Band with Drums, Bass, E-Guitars and Synthesizers. And he also invited himself as Guestmusician on Glockenspiel, Violin and several small Musictoys.

How sexy is that? After more than 10 years, Cologne’s legenday Formation Doppelherz 2000 decide to release their greatest successes under a creative commons licence. We admit though we’ve been working on this since we started our small netlabel – and organised gig after gig with these “last heroes of love”, the latest at Cologne Commons 2013. These guys are nowhere better than at one of their live shows. They celebrate their distinct mix of Disco, Pop, Electro, Schlager and Eurotrance...

This is the first of two EPs that we’re happy to publish from Dominik Vogel. Like so many great artists, Dominik makes little fuss about the creation of his tracks: "It was recorded in one night in one go with my modular system and is therefore not reproducible.” As charming as this understatement may be, it raises more questions than it answers. How many years did it take to study its modules to record three such tracks in one night? How many live performances had Dominik to do, to...

“When the weight drops to the floor, after the lifting, the moment of relaxation is achieved. But if you’re standing on ice, the problems are just about to begin.” Erich Schall in December 2018, gone fishing after dictating.

The subtitle "Fugale Schemen" shows us the way into this acoustically unknown terrain. Like Shadows in the fog, sound events immediately appear and pass us by as we listen and continue to feel our way forward and dive deeper and deeper into this strange world of sound. Irritation and fascination are close together here. There is a lot to discover, but whether and what lies at the end of the journey also depends on what we ourselves bring along. The more open and unprejudiced we are in...

Erich Schall is back with his second release on Der Kleine Gruene Wuerfel, with tracks spanning across a wide variety. Monostilistic albums have never been his cup of tea, but the diversity of electronic music he presents on “Klong and Rauch” couldn’t be more colourful. It all starts with subtle ambient sounds (“Things To Come”) where it takes two and a half minutes for the first beat to appear, followed by minimal techno (“The Sting”). As the listener finds his way, he continues...

Retrospective Self Criticism "My Favorite Songs and Chants" is a compilation from 2001. The tracks are a selection of analog recordings (pre-laptop) with a trusty Fostex 4-track cassette recorder produced in the bedroom and kitchen. The equipment is pure 80s and 90s home recording gear. The instruments are among others the two mini sample keyboards Casio SK-1 and Yamaha VSS-30, the synthesizers Casio CZ-5000 (with the terrific sequencer), the two small Casio CZ-101 and Yamaha DX-100,...
