Hip-Hop Radio Archive

hiphopradioarchive.org / In the 1980s and 1990s, hip-hop radio was an essential element in the spread of hip-hop music. This collection aims to document the history of that spread in the US and worldwide on commercial stations and small college stations alike.

This set is partly from a 27th generation copy of an Underground Flavas tape out of West London and partly from a rip which had been shared on the web a few years back [and subsequently been deaded in terms of linkage]. We’ve bumped the EQ in Izotope, compressed it a touch and tweaked it for your listening pleasure. This show is a great example of why Stretch is held is such high esteem by his peers within the industry as well as the listeners, he may have been a DJ and a host, but the actual...

The worst thing about this 30 year old tape of the Capital Rap Show is the interference [at some points, opera bleeds in from another station, some things just cant be remastered]. The best thing is that Marley drops FIVE tracks that, to this day, have never been officially released: Marley & Flex/ Pete Rock & CL Smooth/ Intelligent Hoodlum, and one from the Have No Fear Swan Is Here full-length by Biz associate, TJ Swan [An album that according to sources never made it past the demo...

Stretch's Comments (on January 18th, 2007): "I've never listened to this show, with the exception of snippets that KBL had on a tape. On it, you'll find my main stain Crazy Legs of Rock Steady, an unsigned group named Ruffneck Bastards, The Coup, Casual from Hiero and a funny as ever Rhythm X a.k.a. Kool Keith, who rhymes, takes over the hosting duties and then takes phone calls with us for the last hour or so. Maybe tomorrow night / Friday morning at one a.m., you could press play and...

RRR are extremely pleased to offer another previously unheard* Stretch & Bobbito Show from 1991. This is a full 90 minute tape, tweaked and remastered to make that compressed FM vibe, sound as bumpin as poss. Filled with treats from the time, all expertly mixed, blended and cut the f**k up by one of the finest DJs on the planet. DJ Stretch Armstrong takes doubles of virtually every tune, perfectly and succinctly tearin em all up, while Kurious and Bobbito go ‘live to five’ with studio...

Moondswingaz and Saafir are in the studio. On side C, Bob talks about seeing a UFO when he was 9 years old. Saafir is doubtful, but has his own ghost story. Saafir: "I got goose pimples!" Stretch: "Did you see a dermatologist?" He also discusses his work with Fat Joe in an indie movie called Thicker than Water   (which he seems to refer to as "Fish Out of Water"). He drops some bars and discusses a Hobo Junction album which also seems to not have materialized...

In late November 1995, New York witnessed DJ Premier broadcasting live as part of an all-star line-up on a classic HOT97 Mixmasters Weekend. Fatman Scoop was in charge of the presentation, all 326 ‘soaking wet’ pounds of him. Primo got busy on the decks with some truly epic productions of his own as well as some monster indie tunes from the period. This decent quality chrome TDK SF from 1987 is packed with tracks from Black Rock n Ron, Nice and Smooth, Kings of Pressure and the Jungle Brothers, and the only comedian I ain't never heard tell no joke, MC Mitchski! The Sunkist ad is brain-worm, but so is "Do The James Brown," so it all balances out. As well as more classics from Cool C and Big Daddy Kane just rhymin alongside Biz, there's a Pepsi Black Cowboys ad with David Bowie & Tina Turner, and a Fat Boys voiced...

What do we have here then? Oh just some insanely early WKCR action from back when the show was in it's infant stages and Stretch was still going by the name of DJ Skinny Bones... (quality isn't great for the first few minutes but settles down by the time the music starts) Although tons of tapes from the duo's 8 year run have been posted online these sessions from 1990 have proved hard to come by. Even Stretch and Bob themselves have been asking for them, so this was quite a find.  Shout out to...

This is a full 3 Hour DJ Red Alert Goes Berserk show from one of the legendary Saturday night mastermixes on 98.7 Kiss FM. It’s one of the most iconic DJs and shows in the ancestry of Hip-Hop and Rap on the airwaves, Kool DJ Red Alert. When the pioneers talk about the golden area of Rap on the radio, Mr Magic and Kool DJ Red Alert are arguably the first names on peoples lips. Along with co-presenters Diane King and Jeff Foxx, take yourself back to April 1989. On a nostalgic aural trip back to...

If you are from outside of the UK, this may be the first time youve heard of the UK Fresh 86 shows. These were at Wembley Arena [NB: ARENA Rap in the UK in 1986] and were billed as 'The event of the decade'. Following the Fresh Fest template on offer in the US from the previous year, and with only 16000 people witnessing what became a pivotal performance of iconic 80s artists, this has arguably become the largest and most important LIVE event in old school UK Hip Hop history, and was part of...

The September 1995 edition of Westwood & Flex's Rap Exchange. As was the norm for me back then, this was edited down with the pause button to fit onto a 90 minute tape. These days the selection on here could just as easily be the set list for a DJ Lay Z B'$t@rd warm-up set at your local 90s rap night - Danger, Drop, Ice Cream, Livin Proof etc but also includes a few (what are now) deeper cuts like Fat Joe's 'Respect Mine' & 'Bronx Tale' and the dope 'Black Reign' by Ten Thieves. - DJ...

The recording (courtesy of that man Diablo) has been pause buttoned a few times but you get a decent chunk of the interview and some proper bangers either side of it. I loved 'Sun Rises...' and probably played it as much as Illmatic when it came out. Premier on his A-game and no skippable tracks. This classic is a 34 year old recording of the Frankie Crocker breakfast show on WBLS!  Just like Grace Jones' The Apple Stretching, this is a beautiful snapshot of early morning early 80s New York, this time, from 1983. There may only be one Rap tune on this tape, but the recording is about much more than just one track, it's an illustration to younger generations, of how things used to be, as well as bein' a throwback to simpler times for the older listeners. In 2017, so many people are all...

This is not just another old school radio show. The operating room shows from Dr. Dre are very hard to find. And this one is imo very special. It contains an interview with KRS and Scott La Rock (6 months before his death) about the bridge wars, one of the important chapters of hip hop history. Scott is dissing Mr Magic, Shan and the Juice Crew and KRS is talking about The bridge and the reason to write 'the bridge is over'. This is like a time capsule back to 1987. - Dutch

Prime golden era rap radio courtesy of Diablo. P-Fine hosting Rap This! on WNYU from September '87 and the tracklist is just splendid. Certified classics by the likes of BDP, Kane and the Jungle Brothers sit alongside relative obscurities like Vandy C & Bill Blast and Devastator (P-Fine and Livio G's group), plus a Stetsasonic promo over chain snatchers' favourite "Go Stetsa I." Interestingly, P also plays "The Ruler's Back" and says it's "never to be released on...

This tape features incredible substitute mixes courtesy of DJ Mighty Mi,  HUMUNGANOID propers to Milo for sending them over. It's been extended via other recordings from the same evening, and I tried to remaster them a bit… It's chock full full of Golden Era classics and ‘buttery’ demo goodness, promo biz from Cage, OC & MC Serch, High & Mighty and the legendary Feels My Balls promo from Stretch & Bobbito themselves. Stretch was outta town, therefore the turntable action was...

This is a beautiful snapshot of Rap & Hip-Hop life in London during the Golden Era of Spring 1988, it features Simon Harris in conversation in the studio, and in the mix. Simon had been to Groove Records ‘The other day’ picking up "Top Billin'", the Lyte as a Rock album, and the BDP By All Means Necessary LP. SOOOO many iconic tracks get played for the first time. Dave Pearce had so much influence on Rap radio during this period, and it’s so obvious to understand why when...

As you may remember,  Big Tim got shot back in '99 *. The full story behind it was never made public but general consensus seems to be that some gangster types wanted to do some business with him (promoting a show, running security or whatever) and didn't react well when he refused. As a result he couldn't present his show the following weekend so Funkmaster Flex steps up and covers for 3 hours, albeit with no talking just music. The voice you hear before the show starts is Pete Tong, who...

A 24-minute Roxanne mix that aired on Power 99 (WUSL) in Philadelphia. Excellent for its simplicity -- from the basic scratches over the dub version of Sparky D's "Sparky's Turn (Roxanne You're Through)," to the heavily echoed Lady B "oh my goodness!" at the end of "The Real Roxanne," to the dope electro-tinged "Do the Roxanne (Dance)" by Dr. Rocx & Co.. It closes out with a super-rare live Disco C Roxanne rhyme over Sparky D's instrumental. - Laze

New York Rap Exchange from December '94 and the last show before Westwood bounced to Radio 1. Shook Ones part 2 is on it's way to ubiquity at this point, and Group Home's 'Supastar' isn't far behind. This tape is the one that put me on to 'Spread It' by Kamakaze and Rayvon's 'Pretty' and also includes the remix of 'What Can I Do' which might be the last great Ice Cube track. You also get the dope freestyle session with Scarface, KRS One and MC Serch (which has appeared on this blog a couple of...

Opening with a couple of KRS World Premieres [off cassette] and ending with a conversation featuring Flavor Unit alumni Apache and Naughty by Nature, this is a dope set of Rap & Ragga from 1993. And Cool C wasn't the only rapper with a Juice Crew Dis, keep an ear out for the original unreleased version of "Outta Here," and the lines about Mr Magic being a "motherfuckin' coke addict!" Track List KRS-One – KRS-One Attacks KRS-One – Outta Here [Unreleased version]...

This tape may well have the world premiere of MC Shan's "Jane Stop This Crazy Thing," as well as Cutmaster DC's "Brooklyn's In The House" but the highlight is Mr. Magic going full Partridge at 30:50 after running Oran "Juice" Jones "The Rain" back to back with Tommy Boy's answer version "Thunder And Lightning" by Miss Thang... This partial episode starts at a little before 10pm and is easy to identify the date because they speak about a show "this Saturday, August 17th." Lots of disses lobbed at Power 99 and their Radioactive show and their "No Rap Workday." And G does his Lakim Shabazz imitation. Tone, Rahzii Hi Powa, and a silent DJ Kam roll up later on. Eazy's house show ("Eazy's House") is mentioned. The second side of this tape had just a few minutes, so I tacked it onto side...
