NPR's Jazz Night in America, hosted by Christian McBride in Jan. 2022. This episode of Crate Digging highlights McCoy Tyner's progression from his time with John Coltrane, and features McCoy performing at The Village Vanguard in New York City on 9/23/1997, which would have been John Coltrane's 71st birthday. A portion of that concert made it into a commercial release on Impulse. But this episode features other gems that didn't make the album – music that has never been heard outside the club on that evening.
Musicians:
McCoy Tyner, piano; George Mraz, bass; Al Foster, drums
Set List:
- "Mr P.C." (John Coltrane)
- Improvised blues "Port au Blues" (McCoy Tyner)
- "The Promise" (Coltrane)
- "I Should Care" (Axel Stordahl and Paul Weston)
- "Pursuance" (Coltrane)
