This third-party compilation is one of three put together by an unknown person and spread on P2P networks, and acts as a 'best of' for Monotonik. We decided it has excellent track choice (check out early tracks from Whiskas and Jiva in particular), plus a number of tracks only normally available in .MOD form as .MP3s, so we've made it an official release and added it to our catalog - the Internet and freely distributed music comes up with cool ideas like this if you're lucky. Finnish old-school Amiga demo scene legend Aleksi Eeben, aka Heatbeat, has never really let up on the composition, but has, rather wonderfully, regressed in his choice of hardware over time, from Amiga, through Commodore 64, to Vic-20, with sideways glances to the Game Boy. But it's his C64 equivalent of 'The White Album', the appropriately named 'The White Box', which sums up some of his borderline deviant SID-chip excursions over the previous few years. The actual 'White Box' artifact is a ...

We like it when old friends return to Monotonik, and after his very well-received EP on our net.label last year, Holland's excellent Secede provides a truly epic new track, "The Whistler", ahead of his "Bye Bye Gridlock Traffic" album forthcoming on Merck , and his smart-ola remix work for N5MD and Merck. It's good to thrive on angles, and "The Whistler" plots a course away from your average pure-toned geektronica, edging ever-closer to the template of...

We're proud to welcome the debut release on Monotonik from Stefan Ternemar, the Swedish artist also known as S.T. 'Emotions In A Box' is Stefan's first set of songs released anywhere outside his own webpage, and it's a fitting introduction to his bold, melodically strident idm electronics. First off would be 'Downtown', almost Huelsbeck-ian in its wish to get straight down to brass tacks and blast you with carefully considered catchiness, heaping layer upon layer of gorgeously synthetic sounds...

This first set of free to download, Creative Commons-licensed MP3 releases from our electronica-based net.label, Monotonik ( http://www.monotonik.com ), were originally released from January 1999 to March 2001. They chronicle the period after Monotonik decided to stop releasing .MOD files, and start releasing those new-fangled (at the time!) .MP3s. Some highlights might include Lackluster's languidly beautiful "Bothersome (Mother Mix)", later to feature on his lovely 'Container' album...

Well, we certainly don't release many DJ sets here at Monotonik - in fact, the last one was over 2 years ago, wow. And the main reason for this is that there's very few good eclectic mixes out there. Until now, that is. We first heard the mixing skills of Chicago's ~aD being spread via, of all places, Usenet. So we're proud to present the first of a number of stunning DJ sets we're going to put out from him - hop on the "Pharis Wheel" :P So, why do we love this mix so much? Well,...

This is the end, my friend. mono211 and monotonik will continue to put out the best mp3s, CDs and so on, but MODs on mono211+tonik end here, right now. You wouldn't want us fading away, would you? Better to burn out with this final compilation. It's been over 3 years and getting on for 200 releases on both labels, so the title - pretty suitable, we guess? h0l and the rest of the mono211/monotonik crew would like to extend their thanks to everyone who ever released MODs via mono or mono211 or...

We got our Nine. Mistress that is, not millimetre. Here's a joke: What do you get if you put a vaguely gothic D&B chick, a 303, a female voice choir, the complete Macross saga on DVD and the rhythm section of the Cardiff Turntable Orchestra in the same room for four months? You give up? Well, I don't know either, but there's one crawling down your 'net connection. Welcome to Monotonik's brand new year, courtesy of a debut release (or is it?) from Finn and self-proclaimed cosmic superspy, Aleksi Virta. He fearlessly busts out this supremely accomplished album of jazzy, dubby electronics, originally released on a scandalously limited, horrendously collectible 100-copy sold-out CDR edition, and now, thankfully available to the general public via the wonders of the Internet. So basically, we're looking at everything from the headnodding organ jam of 'Nebulae...

As promised, and as most of you have been dreading/looking forward to, the Subi best-of retrospective has finally arrived. Throughout his 11 years making music in the Amiga 'demo-scene' and outside, Sam Brown, aka Subi, and formerly known as Subculture, has always shown originality and a doggedness that's characterised his excellent output. The typical Subi release blends cheeky samples, breakbeats, and rampant catchiness to produce something that's pretty much unlike most of the other music...

We first released Michigan-based foreboding idm superstar Dead Eros on Monotonik back in 2005, and are delighted to welcome him back with this 4-track release, 'Cycle EP', all slightly spooky, overlapping electronics in a distinctly regional, but distinctly original way. We start out with 'Specific Ocean', which is fuzzed-up angular metal funk, in a laid back way, before going on to the keyboard-flecked, downtempo 'Ignite Alarm', which is heavy on the shuffle, almost half-speed drill and bass...

We're delighted to present a second EP from Finnish artist Planet Boelex, following his first release for Monotonik in the form of the 'Sinking In The Soup EP' . Boelex is also known as long-time .MOD artist Tweeter, a noted alumni of early labels such as Voodoo, and continues to delight allcomers with his beautifully composed, wonderfully melodic idm sound - oddly retro, but somehow still relevant. The 'Second Thoughts EP' starts with the slow build of 'Shower Curtain', all shimmering melody...

Dutch-based artist Izmar has been releasing on Monotonik for a couple of years now, starting with his marvellous pair of 'Aze' albums, which shifted him way away from minimal techno roots into almost Fila Brazillia-style jazzelectronic territory. Now, we get a second follow-up EP, 'Conscious', which shifts his wonderful nu-chill in yet another direction, thanks to his unusual use of a sitar on top of his normal voice and live instrument cornucopia. Thus, we start with 'Walking', a typically...

And the band played on. With the band, in this case, being made up of the rather smart Finnish-type Vae, formerly known as Strala, and boss of the smart Net.label Kahvi (recently resurrected from purgatory, and looking all the better for it!) In any case, "Harry Slazenger" (no relation to Jake, Vae assures us..) is an initially distant, suddenly pendulum-like swing through sweetly toned electronic pop music - like Kraftwerk without the Teutonic bent, or a massively slowed-down...

One of the first all-ambient releases on Monotonik in quite some time, this 3-track EP from relatively undiscovered Japanese artist Akira Kosemura is a beautifully naturalistic drift through what sounds like field recordings twinned with sweet sine waves melodies - reminiscent of anything from Lackluster at his most ambient to fellow Japanese Monotonik releaser Sabii. Thus, we have three delicate treats to enjoy - firstly, 'Forest In The Morning' has a repeated motif and an almost sepuchral...

The latest release for guitar and beat-strewn idm artist Beak on Monotonik, following the 'Amoral Mayor Earwig EP' back in 2004 and 'El Hacedor EP' in 2005, the 'Bishop Whitney EP' continues his extremely unique mix of strongly played guitar, acoustic noises and cut-up percussion in fine, fine style. This time, we start out with the characteristic plucked freneticism of 'Context Clues', before seguing into the languid crawl of 'Teach Texas Manner', further showcasing his totally individual,...

Not necessarily one of Monotonik's most 'normal' releases, but heartily welcomed anyhow, this unconventional glitch-electronic 7-track EP is from the oddly named Gaza F*gg*t, who can best be described as, well, an alter ego of a previous Monotonik releaser. It all starts off with the gentle organ of 'Horse With Gold Teeth', before the latter end of the track gets all warped and Japanese-speech sampling, before the completely awesome 'Rotten Fruit Messageboard Apology' arrives, all explicit...

Quite frankly, there is only one person who could possibly open the proceedings of monoRAVEik as a self-propelled entity, and that is the old fart himself. Subi brings it back after nearly a year (was it?) away from the tracker with the nearly understandable title "Trying 2 B Hardcore". If anyone thought that the cheesemix of "Serendipity City" was representative of Subi's new direction, they are proved wrong by this jet propelled slice of D&B&Rock&Roll. What new...

Oh my. Ever since we at Monotonik heard Swedish bleep-metal group Machinae Supremacy cover Chris Huelsbeck's classic 'Great Giana Sisters' theme in heart-rendingly wonderful .SID chiptune vs. Spinal Tap style, we've been major, major fans. So, after the group completed the soundtrack to (extremely fun) PC indie shoot-em-up Jets 'N Guns ( http://jng.rakeingrass.com/ ), and made the entire higher-bitrate quality OST available to fans on their official homepage ( http://www.machinaesupremacy.com/...

Vae, most excellent proprietor of the net.label Kahvi, kindly gives us his 2nd release on Monotonik, and this one's a treat - melodically beautiful, and complete with ambient duck.qwak action, the key element of any classic song in this day and age. So whether it be the nifty serene organ loop or the shuffle-crack percussion which really give you the chills on this particular number, Vae's friend (the fowl who's silver, of course!) provides a touching, emotion-filled experience for all of us....

After the unexpected and tragic loss of Andi Horvath, aka Ramone/Mono, of a sudden heart failure in June (tribute page here), we at Monotonik+friends were contacted by his friends at Fruitz Of Dojo (the Mac demo-scene group he was a member of) with a number of great unreleased Ramone .XM tracks (playable in WinAmp) which had been composed, in the months before he passed away, for both a demo ('Fistful Of Dojo') and a 'chip' music-disc ('SuperSIDekick Sessions'). So, we're proud to present these...

Mono mainstay and UK breakz+techno-terror Hoffman (formerly known as Dreamfish) gives us another absolute gem of a mix, and this time it's a drum+bass extravanganza taken from the best of the junglistically influenced Mono/Mono211/Monotonik tunes to be released over the past 4 years. This is also unique in that it's Hoffman's first virtual mix - whilst he's a whiz with the ol' Technics, this track was mixed using the Virtual Turntables PC software alongside a Numark mixer, plus an Alesis...

The long-awaited mixes from the number one scene luddite are finally HERE! Yes, the first of Subi's retro DJ sets is upon us. We hope you like. The general idea is to do a few of these, grouping by type. This time around we're concentrating on the proto-hardcore European brutalism sound that started when Joey Beltram came up with "Mentasm" and T99 turned its famous stab into an unholy racket on "Anastasia". So, not quite into the classic period yet, but certainly getting...

That irrepressibly, uhh, irrepressible Subi returns with a new release on his very own monoRAVEik sublabel, and this time it's a 21st century remake of an almost decade-old track of his, "Serendipity City". Whilst the original stayed very .MOD-ish and staccato, this remix smooths out to funky oldskoolinflected drum-roll breaks and an almost progressive breakbeat feel. Could it be that, finally, Subi is coming back in fashion? This track wouldn't feel out of place in a nu-skool breaks...

Wandering and wondering at the same time, artists such as Distance and Jiva define the unique Monotonik style, and this interpretation by Viinikala (of an unreleased Distance track) glides slowly along the same heavenly path. We've got the deliciously pure synthsounds, we've got the pulsing atoms pulsing the atmospherics, and it all adds up to the smallest slice of chilled serendipity. Comparisons? Naaah. :)

A return for Ramone, and it's just as blunted as usual. Mm, in our opinions, rather wonderful - but then, what do we know, huh? :) Perhaps original because it's not afraid to be a bit more downtempo than your conventional hiphop-jungle-hybrid. Then again, it could be the schmokes that make us choke. We'll just slope off then :)

And the 'Reiha EP' is just a sampling of his layered, deceptively complex electronic music stylings. Renzu explains of his background: "My story is very typical of my generation of IDM artists in that I got inspired by BBS/internet computer music and started with trackers from an early age...

A very interesting EP this, sent to us from his sekrit hideaway by Dreamfish in his last dispatch, along with the already-released "Armani's Dreams". These are self-confessedly 'oldskool' jungle tracks, with something of a 1993 spirit about them - but they're actually damn original cos he doesn't sound like he's trying to emulate the Amen b-boy crew. In other words, by going back it goes forward. Amen. :)

This one's been coming for a while, but the latest release from incredibly unconventional Finnish musician Aleksi Eeben (the .MOD artist formerly known as Heatbeat) is the tremendously obtuse but lovable 'Three Times The Music', 8 tracks of offbeat but somewhat gorgeous bleeps and bloops. Aleksi is, as ever, a bit of a jazz fan, and the kind of melodies and stylings he picks makes him an acquired taste, to say the least. But if you dig the odd, odd grooving of first track 'Clockwork', then...
