Loops, phrases, and rhythms lurch in and out of focus around each other. As sounds and moods progress, surprises and magic happen. I've never heard anything else that sounds quite like this. Tangent is an artist focusing on electronic, computer based, algorithmic, and process music, although there's still plenty of room for improvisation within this remit, particularly plunderphone improvision. Sam Stephens also releases music as Unknown Rockstar.

Art should reflect the artist’s vision for the world. The world this piece intends to create is shrouded in spectral lights and abysmal darkness, it is a world caught between bestial cruelty and yearning sentimentality. Darkness and Light exist on the same continuum, and art should be willing to reflect the spectrum, between sheer horror and radiant beauty. This album should be seen as an effort to that end. This album is essentially a collection of semi-spontaneous improvisations made over...

"I was walking through Capitol Hill, Seattle one weekend, and encountered an abandoned piano at the side of the road. I decided it needed a final piece of loving, so I recorded it in my phone. The next week I found the piano had been joined by a second, and both pianos had had their keyboards smashed. So I played the strings directly. Both pieces reflect the decay and misuse of the pianos, and the environment they spent a short time in before going to their final resting place." The...

Recorded live at the Festiva of Enjoyment at Enjoy Gallery in Wellington NZ on the 25th November 2002. Jeff plays baritone sax on the first track, and tenor sax on the second. A performance with the aggression of the title. The first track starts with a roaring wall of sax noise, working its way to a power drone tone (that has given me images of Jeff with a saxophone mouthpiece connected to a jet engine), and then to more subtle tonal landscapes. Halfway through the second track, Jeff pulls out...

He loves the grain and whorl, the texture he pulls from his music, and gives to us. A mixture of sample based styles, some sequenced, some more abstract. Wood, Brass, Nylon Part 2 (Reclining Remix) is a very beautiful remix of a guitar track from an earlier Tangent Precipitate album. A solo experimental project, of usually improvised music of different forms. Tangent Precipitate journeyed through a broad range of music production techniques and genres. Generally albums had an emphasis on the capture of the raw and unpredictable creative moment. Tangent Precipitate has been...

Recorded live at the Cross bar on the 12th of July 2003. The assault of sound on this recording calls to mind the Japanese excesses of High Rise and their ilk. A great document of the energy of a Shambolics live performance. The Shambolics made nasty, dirty punk rock music in 2003 and 2004. Started by the core members Dead Boy Shambles on guitar and Stumbly Shambolic on drums and vocals, they invited Sleepy Sam Shambles to play bass for them and then Evil Stan Shambles to play saxophone. They...

A rich mushy bed of chords and floating melody lines warp and shimmer, both oppressive and hazy. A father/son duo that collide their differing ideas and music creation techniques together, and assemble the bits into unusual albums with a whiff of power and madness.

A double CD of improvised piano, influenced by classical music, jazz, and the avantgarde. Recorded on the sly in Massey Conservatorium of Music practice rooms on a day of September 2004. The album is for Ms Ruby Nekk. The current alias Sam Stephens, a musician currently based in New Zealand, uses for most of his solo work. He is an instrumental performing and recording artist.... working with known, unknown, and experimental elements to create recordings of interest to those who are curious...

Hypnotic, dreamy, confrontational, complex - the album travels through many moods and styles. An assemblage of live parts, samples, treatments, field recordings and anything else that can make a complex organic composition like this work. The current alias Sam Stephens, a musician currently based in New Zealand, uses for most of his solo work. He is an instrumental performing and recording artist.... working with known, unknown, and experimental elements to create recordings of interest to...

The sounds of circuits and strings layer, combine and mutate to calming and transcendent effect. The current alias Sam Stephens, a musician currently based in New Zealand, uses for most of his solo work. He is an instrumental performing and recording artist.... working with known, unknown, and experimental elements to create recordings of interest to those who are curious about the manifestations of sound. The Unknown Rockstar is at heart an improvisor, and the albums he releases are single or...

Do This is an album with tracks in a mixture of styles. Do This itself is a collection of samples. Some of the other tracks are made up of samples, such as I Spent My Night, which is a free jazz cutup. There is also some electronic music, and a track of keyboard music, I Spent My Day. A solo experimental project, of usually improvised music of different forms. Tangent Precipitate journeyed through a broad range of music production techniques and genres. Generally albums had an emphasis on the...

Disturbed Bits is a series of long pieces of beautiful and intense power electronics. They investigate the ability of the juxtaposition of treated loops of different varieties to create resultant sounds that are different in character from the source material, perhaps "greater than the sum of its parts" as it were. The second set of five use pure granular superimposition to build tracks, with a different approach to most users of granular synthesis. A solo experimental project, of...

Recorded live at the Newtown Community Centre in Wellington NZ on the 7th of August 2004. Recorded the same evening as the Rick Jensen Trio release the excursionist. Jeff plays baritone sax. Jeff spends most of this performance in a continuous drone of overtone manipulation and investigation of the space he is in, with flurries of notes sneaking in later on. A subtle work that rewards listening. Jeff Henderson is an integral part of the New Zealand improvised music scene. He is truly a world...

An album of beautiful, relatively sparse instrumental playing, on acoustic and electric guitar and on clarinet. The instrumental methods and modes developed through the Tangent Precipitate era are bought to a more focused conception of improvisation and sound under the guise of this new persona. The current alias Sam Stephens, a musician currently based in New Zealand, uses for most of his solo work. He is an instrumental performing and recording artist.... working with known, unknown, and...

Three songs of cowboy style rock music.from a recording session the Opium Cowboys did in 2004. The Insatiable Opium Cowboys were a group of friends who played music together in 2003 and 2004. They gigged together regularly as Richie Rhinestone and The Insatiable Opium Cowboys. The common ground the Cowboys had in their thoughts about rock music, and the contrasts in their individual styles made for good times for the Cowboys and their audiences.

Forceful electronic music, and brute-force sampling. A solo experimental project, of usually improvised music of different forms. Tangent Precipitate journeyed through a broad range of music production techniques and genres. Generally albums had an emphasis on the capture of the raw and unpredictable creative moment. Tangent Precipitate has been retired, and further music is now produced as the Unknown Rockstar and as Tangent.

Recorded live at the Photospace in Wellington NZ in July 2003. With Rick playing alto sax and clarinet, Dick Whyte playing cello, and Sam Stephens playing double bass. The Rick Jensen Trio/Quartet was started in New Zealand 1999, now based in London U.K. The group is a live performance ensemble that has many members come and go throuhg the years.
