A house does not fall into disrepair unaided. Its supports buckle and its walls crumble often while people still live in them. Longtime collaborators CCI (bass, flute) and n.kra (guitar, sax) present two long contemplative pieces of equal length. Each is a structure built, collapsed, and sorted through the ruins.

Washington, D.C.-based act V.IOLET is Jeff Surak, one half of the duo V. with releases on Bake/Staalplaat, Public Eyesore, and their own label ZEROMOON Recordings (http://www.zeromoon.com). In the vein of cut-paste-loop ambient industrial musics, "ack" is a new 2-track, 17-minute affair which makes adept use of all musical dichotomies: loud/quiet, noise/melody, high/low, tension/release. Surak develops his pieces around the delicate balance of these extreme perceptual thresholds....

In this first installment of the slaptape series, ambient/glitch musician Michael Bentley ( The Foundry , Fällt , No Type ) contributes a one-sided 34 minute work based on some old Russian and Hungarian folk vinyl he found at an Oakland library sale. The work is divided into 3 tracks of various lengths. As a whole, the work combines layered digital processing of samples with elements of slow motion free improvisation to create a moody reflection on a time and place that never actually existed.

Compiled to celebrate the first 10 mp3 releases on slapart, lo and behold our first compilation is now an mp3 release itself. Some gems from the first 10 releases as well as some new stuff by those artists. Even some new artists. For the most part, a documentation of a peculiar slice of Brooklyn electronica, with some well-meaning guests from Cleveland and Canada. Reviews and more info here . The long-awaited return by laptop composer, n.kra. Wait, can I say that about myself? Awaited by me at least. Seven fragments of aural exposition that might describe distinct places, frames of mind from which we perceive music; fragmented blunted shined by memory. To induce a physically emotive response in the listener, most of the melodies are based on harmonics whose overtones create inner ear vibrations, the frequency of which are intended to affect emotional states. The louder you listen...

Who is DJ Shield you ask? An unknown electro-soldier from the Deep South, DJ Shield does for experimental/electronic/improv underground what DJ Shadow did for funk 45s and old school hip hop. Although this artist works exclusively with samples of pre-recorded music, you'd be hard-pressed to discern that from the organic nature of this release. Some of the samples sound like Evan Parker, Blackalicious, Radian thrown in with some Tuvan throat singing, kotos, shakuhachi, etc. but we can only guess...

Every year, municipalities purchase thousands of trains to carry their citizens from one point to another. Each year more thousands of cars are crashed, recycled, rendered obsolete, junked, and purchased anew. But what happens to the discarded car? It stands waiting or perhaps jumbled together with others or perhaps too rusted to move or simply lost. Many lifetimes of utility sit reduced to a vast post-modern sculpture of municipal junk. In what function are the cars more beautiful? Using a...

Mike Berk makes you groove with an imminently danceable 6 track maxi-single. Everyone at the slapart office just can't stop listening to his "idiom neutral reformed." I don't know what you call this kind of music, but it's good. A cross between pop and experimental.

Glomag (formerly on Sire, Mode) takes us on a drowsy tour in a goofy 8-bit wonderland. Created mostly with GameBoy Nanoloop software, naught evokes vintage arcade soundtracks and high-profile fashion queens. Check out "Bleat" for its Journey-esqye synth arpeggios, vocal meanderings, and SHEEP! You can download all five tracks, including one live remix recorded at Tonic NYC.

Albert Casais (0mnid) is another tri-state recordist. His technique on "Muhheakunnuk" is more literal, juxtaposing transparent sound sources against one another to create a separate reality. Places that exist simultaneously and forever but never together.

A friendly listener-performer from the North of Here, Michael V. Farley has been tangential to Slapart since the days of No Transmission. Here radios whizz by vacuum cleaners powered by pigs that CaN fly. Varied experimental techniques with a home-cooked flavor. Not comfort food but 'comfort sound'. Through the static, faintly voices and other human sounds sometime distinguish themselves, suggesting memories you cant quite remember. Call it organic or perhaps analog. The last track even has...

Heavy-hittin funky sampler DJ Sheild (the E before the I please as I was recently informed) brings us a fine new album of variegated sound, a grand follow-up to his first Slapart release "Midnight on an Open Highway." An ambitious full-length effort of 7 long mixes (each is more than 6 minutes long) stringing together a few gigabytes worth of disparate samples of music you may or may not recognize. Whether you identify the samples or not, Pirate Radio Broadcasts stands on its own....

The machine you touch each day is capable of many things. It speaks, it talks, it moves in its own way. 99% of all people though use their machines for their intended use. It never speaks, it never talks, it never gets to move. The other 1% are led by chefkirk, forever searching for their machines' pulse. It is a hard thing to feel a heartbeat beneath the cold metal and copper tracings of most machines for sure. But I assure you it is present in all of them, and Clear Cutting offers 5 fine...

In this second installment of the slaptape series, Jeremy Carter of the jam-improv-rock outfit Carter Bros. explores the more delicate side of his hand-made instruments. This cassette has two sides: one side made using Carter's own uniquely designed electric upright bass (see picture), the other side using a standard 12-string electric also crafted by Carter. The music itself is beautiful... extended Frippertronic guitar drones, heavily bowed bass figures mashed to death by equalizers and...

Multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Carter (guitar, upright electric bass, flute, electronics) corrals his brother Tim to keep the rhythm, which he does very well thank you. The first is a familiar Coltrane tune showcasing Jeremy on the lead on each of his instruments. The second is an original composition. I know it's not exactly "electronic music" but it's still got that improv edge you gotta love.

Like a monkey that dances for his master at the fair. The old man perpetually cranks a magical box, which due to the slight variations in force of the master's turning hand always emits rhythmic melodies slightly in and out of phase with one another. A new territory in Vaughn's work based more on samples and drone-like, forever changing rhythms than his prior release, "Onset" [slapmp3_009] . If IDM can be non-idiomatic, this is it. Then again, what is IDM and what has not been...

Through our association with online music juggernaut NOTYPE we dug up this release from the flatlands of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, which apparently is somewhere in Canada. JON VAUGHN is a young artist who presently resides there. His work addresses the collaboration/juxtaposition of 'different' concepts, aesthetics, and media, approached from both a critical and personal perspective. As a result, this 6-track, 24-minute tour de force runs the gamut of electronic music idioms yet remarkably...

In the third installment of the slaptape series, n.kra composes some prepared guitar pieces specifically for distribution on cassette. Please tolerate it in all its digital preciseness here. Side A offers 6 different soundscapes, all but track 2 prepared in the guitar. Side B is a true b-side. 30 minutes of skittering and radios interrupted by long, extended 60-cycle hums filtered and extended and layered in real-time. The title invokes the feeling Cajuns have digging through the muck and brine...

Music is a type of travel. And as you travel, the soundscape always exist in constant flux. A bird, a tree, a truck, the changing distance of objects from a car window play their symphony and the driver and passenger(s) slip in and out of awareness of their melody. Objects and buildings and people and views one only peripherally notices for a very short time, never to encounter again. v.stevenson's "fromways" is influenced by this wrenching experience of "passing through,"...

Slapart ran across this Alabama native at Mike Berks now defunct ThinkTank party. Like Berks "idiom neutral reformed" (slapmp3_oo4), this release gets its hands dirty equally with both pop and experiment. While Mattinsons programming leans a bit more towards Top 40 tendencies, "backmask" is a solid album-length (2314") mp3 release from an up-and-coming Brooklyn producer. Fans of cut-up and orchestral electronics (Aphex Twin, Mum) wont be disappointed.

In the fourth installment of the slaptape series, v.stevenson crafts two exquisite extended collage pieces assembled mostly from the contents of a corrupted hard drive. Fragments of his prior work are retrieved by the disk utility in various states of corruption. However, as Stevenson's work often centers on error and the repetition of malfunction, there is no way to tell which sounds are intentional and which are corrupted. These pieces are truly crafted for the cassette and much of the...
