trump with a 16-point lead in the state of south carolina. 26 of the last 27 polls taken in south carolina show mr. trump leading in that state. the vast majority of those 26 polls that show him leading show him leading by double digits including all the polls taken in south carolina this calendar year. mr. trump came in second in iowa. he won new hampshire by a mile. unless things change over the next four days drastically he looks set to win south carolina. the race on the republican side will rejigger a little bit because after south carolina we should expect the republican field might shrink further. somebody will quit after losing badly in south carolina. in terms of the president's remarks about our allies around the world being horrified by the tone of the republican primary, but not necessarily more horrified by mr. trump than other republican candidates, there is some polling evidence out of south carolina thanks to the democratic leaning firm, ppp, which suggests that donald trump supporters in south carolina are significantly more likely than the rest of the south carolina repub

the idea was to win there, come to south carolina and win with these voters in south carolina. right now, again, these numbers could change. this is the second wave of exit poll data. donald trump leading with white evangelicals. we can look at it this way. there's a college/non-college divide. roughly splits the electorate in half. those with college degrees, marco rubio is winning among them. trump and cruz right behind them. those without college degrees, trump is winning big, rubio falls back farther. there is also this ideology, the breakdown, how people are describing themselves tonight. again, 82% saying they're very or -- there we go. 82% saying very or somewhat conservative. look at this. see among very conservative, ted cruz is soing whkoing doing wha do, 40% of the vote. ted cruz -- it's supposed to happen. it's not moving. this is what happens on election night. the ted cruz number drops and drops. you get down to moderates, he's in single digits. ted cruz's support is concentrated there. donald trump meanwhile, he's in the high 20s, low 30s every group. >> on those

first place in south carolina. donald trump, ted cruz and marco rubio. south carolina voters are divide on whether they want a candidate with political experience or an outsider. and those who want experience are going to marco rubio. and ted cruz gets 34 percent of those. it is a good night for donald trump. he gets 60 percent of that vote. it looks tight among the top three because voters are split of what they want. winning in november is the most important thing. rub grow gets that group at 49 percent. and cruz at 21. and trump down to 18 percent. and so if elect ability is on their minds they are not going for donald trump. if they share their values, interesting in light of how tough and gritty it has been. ted cruz gets 38 percent of those who say it is important to share my values. and rubio gets 26. and carson?íp gets ten and kasi 10%. & trump in single digits in terms of that measure in the exit polls. for a guy who tells it like it s. trump runs away with those voters. no one is even close. we are not s

what happened in south carolina, there was less of the typical south carolina dirty trick, which is i don't know who did this, and i can't capture it in any way. it becomes a whisper campaign, something that you can't document. it becomes something that is into the wind and nobody has to pay a price for it. we did see things turn in sort of a nasty way, including my favorite not dirty trick but sort of nasty campaign trick, which was a robocall, which has been running the last 24 hours run by a ted cruz supporting super pac. it's an anti-donald trump robocall and it is a hall of fame anti-gay campaign tactic. listen to this. >> a little taste of the south carolina republican primary. that robocall going out to more than 100,000 households in south carolina right before the vote. obviously didn't hurt donald trump too much. >> donald trump ran up huge numbers on ted cruz in new hampshire and now in south carolina. and i would venture to say that none of his supporters have any problem with his positions and his comments. so i think this was a tactic, i would be surprised if he keeps it

south carolina does pick winners. what are we hearing and seeing tonight in these exit polls about the feel of the electorate in terms of the kind of candidate they want? >> i think that's true back to 1980. if you look at that history. >> that's right, ronald reagan. >> i think what is so fascinating about this entire cycle and we are seeing again tonight in south carolina, dana, is what is sort of driving the republican party electorate right now? this number is astounding. take a look at this. we asked voters as they headed to the polls whether or not they felt betrayed by republican party politicians. this is asked of republicans participating in the republican party. 53% of republicans today in south carolina said yes. a majority of republicans in south carolina said they feel betrayed by their own party leaders. 44% say no. that is what is happening underneath this entire primary race. and then we asked, which candidate ran the most unfair campaign? and look at this. donald trump, the winner of this category, if

i'm here in south carolina. he's doing really well here in south carolina. so i don't think the president is really underestimating him. i think the president doesn't like him. period. i mean, don't forget, donald trump originally accused the president of not being born in the united states before he said that ted cruz wasn't qualified to run for president because he was born in canada. and so there's no love lost between these two folks and this is also a president who clearly wants to see a democrat elected because if he doesn't, his legacy is really endangered and that's why i believe he probably wants to see hillary clinton elected because bernie sanders wants to change obamacare. >> and professor, when it comes to the supreme court, the senate can't stop the president from nominating someone to succeed justice scalia, the president can't stop the senate from ignoring his nomination, so does somebody blink? >> well, that's right. i mean, this is a power the framers gave to both branches, so the president does nominate, but the senate must confirm. and if
