"A Brilliant Accident was broadcast in 1993 by the VPRO and not much later in most states of America. It was a series in which six scientists gave their views on their work and the world, with the central theme: where have you come in your understanding of our thinking and doing? What did science actually lead us to at the end of the 20th century: knowledge or understanding? The entire series is collected in this digipak on four DVDs. An almost 15-hour expedition through the frontiers of our consciousness, science and philosophy."

"I loved to play as a child, I think I like to play now. Hampstead Heath is a marvelous place to climb trees, to hide, to play games with others; it's a marvelous place for someone who likes plants; it's a marvelous place for its historical associations because from Hampstead Heath you can look out on a vista which was there in Roman London. Many of my uncles and cousins were mathematicians, and geologists, and physical scientists. I imagined at one time that I might be such myself. It was a place where I had various scientific fantasies. Once, when I was in Hampstead Heath, I went and knocked at the door of Julian Huxley - he lived just by Hampstead Heath - I think he was very surprised. I was ushered in, and this dirty little, rather precocious twelve-year-old boy said, 'Professor Huxley I have some questions about evolution.' I said I didn't see how man could have evolved so quickly by natural selection, everything was happening too quickly, and he said, 'Yes, that's not just nature. There's culture as well.' The instrument of evolution, now, was culture. His answer was mystifying and I think probably at that time my own interests were very much more in botany and zoology, and not terribly much to do with being human."

Oliver Sacks would later write, "That day was wild, strange, and interesting...Each of us has been changed by that day."

Together with the series, a book with the same title containing the text from the interviews was also published. This hardback book, A Glorious Accident, was published in 1999 by W. H. He also spoke about his experience participating in A Glorious Accident. To date, videos, or interviews with the original 6 participants speaking about their experience in this documentary are rare. There are no known videos of the other participants speaking about their experience years later. As of the date of this upload, 2021.12, Daniel C. Dennett and Rupert Sheldrake are the only living participants aside from Wim Kayzer.

Het was een serie waarin zes wetenschappers hun visi gaven op hun werk en de wereld, met als centraal thema: tot waar bent u gekomen in uw begrip over ons denken en doen? Waartoe heeft de wetenschap ons eigenlijk gebracht aan het eind van de 20ste eeuw: kennis of begrip?

Wim Kayzer ontmoette de neuroloog en psychiater Oliver Sacks, de zoöloog en paleontoloog Stephen Jay Gould (ovverleden in mei 2002), de wetenschapsfilosoof Stephen Toulmin, de filosoof Daniel C. Dennett, de biochemicus en celbioloog Rupert Sheldrake en de natuurkundige Freeman Dyson.

Na die ontmoetingen kwamen de zes bijeen voor een daglange ontmoeting.

"Die dag was wild, vreemd en belangwekkend... leder van ons is door die dag veranderd," zou Oliver Sacks later schrijven.

Bij de VPRO stond de telefoon wekenlang roodgloeiend, terwijl de serie werd vertoond. In de Verenigde Staten, waar hij in het merendeel der staten werd uitgezonden, waren de reacties zo mogelijk nog juichender.
