"The Time Dwellers" is the fourth album from Cousin Silas & Kevin Lyons, an album of considerable beauty, one that further cements their creative partnership. This is music for the imagination, music that will inspire uniquely personal connections in each individual. Silas & Lyons’ pairing particular form of experimental ambient music is tailor-made for listeners who love nothing more than to be fully immersed in otherworldly, expansive aural environments; and it just seems...

It is almost exactly a year to the day that 2 - the second album from Cousin Silas, Tim Jones & Kevin Lyons - was recorded ... the accumulation of a week of creative experimentation and collaboration between three old friends. Unfortunately I was unable to attend that particular meeting of minds but was delighted with the album when it arrived in my in-box. Underpinned by Jones’ samples and loops, 2 is a sonically adventurous and wonderfully imaginative journey into more abstract,...

The idea of collaboration has negative connotations as does compromise … but something truly beautiful can be born from working together, sharing a vision and journeying on the road of creation with one or two close friends. This is evidenced here, on this the fifth volume of collaborations from Cousin Silas and his friends. Over 5 CDs worth of music … 800+ mb of data if you choose 320kbps MP3 files … Cousin Silas and Friends vol 5 (waag_rel088) is a hefty celebration of truly independent...

“Unstable Lands (waag_rel087)” is the latest release from Drew Miller aka Brother Saturn. It features a deeper, more immersive electronic sound that feeds the imagination … a sound that is less drone-based and more melodic with loops playfully interacting with one another to create dense, otherworldly layers of sound. This is an album to lose yourself in … and to help you do this, each track features wonderful artwork from Smashy that will help guide your thoughts, if you want to, to...

“Micro Dronescapes Vol 1” by Cousin Silas A number of people have taken Cousin Silas’ Dronescapes series to their heart, myself included. I find them utterly fascinating and eagerly await each instalment like a child on Christmas Eve. This month, rather than release another dronescape in all its longform ambient glory, Cousin Silas has decided to put out 6 shorter pieces that all sit comfortably within the 11 to 13 minute range. These pieces are an utter delight: they are long enough to...

Cousin Silas’ thirty-second dronescape is dedicated to the memory of Dame Zaha Hadid, the exceptional British architect who died recently. According to Wikipedia, Hadid liberated architectural geometry with the creation of highly expressive, sweeping fluid forms of multiple perspective points and fragmented geometry that evoke the chaos and flux of modern life. I marvel at Hadid’s creations, especially the Riverside Museum in Glasgow (pictured on the album cover) … she was a true...

Thomas: I was deeply intrigued when Scott first pitched his idea for an Easter-themed album earlier in the year … especially considering the darker subject and proposed sound … I was not disappointed. This album is a melancholic delight … one that is perfect for the dark day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. A 320kbps version of this release will be available here on Archive for free with a lossless version available over on Bandcamp for ‘pay what you want’ which does include...

I am particularly fond of Cousin Silas' longform pieces. Whether it is his dronescapes or the rerelease of Owlers Wood, Cousin Silas knows how to make longform music that is both interesting and engaging rather than monotonous and dull. He has raised the bar, at least for me, and graciously keeps feeding what is developing into an insatiable hunger for more. “Swirl (waag_rel082)” is his latest longform creation, one that explores the vastness of space and time within its 78 minute duration....

Extropy … a noun … the theory that cultural and technological development will expand indefinitely and in an orderly progressive manner throughout the universe, the tendency of systems to grow more organised. I am proud to present a wonderfully atmospheric and very “sci-fi” (as my daughter described it) album from Matthew VandenBrook entitled “Extropy” … more ambient than his previous release, the marvellous “Sound Then Silence (waag_rel064)” release just over one year ago,...

I’ve spoken before of my love for weird fiction and the pleasure I have in pairing the writings of Lovecraft to deliciously “out there” music … with “Thirteen Things That Don’t Make Sense” is Kevin Lyons I now have a new addition to my collection. This is Kevin Lyons’ latest solo offering on weareallghosts, an album full of the kind of atmospheric ambient electronica that Lyons excels at and I just love to consume. It isn’t an album that can be easily described other than to...

I am a huge fan of Cousin Silas’ dronescape series and get rather excited when I receive a link to the latest edition … I am genuinely surprised that we are now on the thirty-first edition AND the soundscapes presented seem to be getting better and better. The thirty-first dronescape from Cousin Silas has me in space. It is a wet Saturday in Scotland, the 13th February to be exact … I am sitting in my living room looking out to rainy sleet and a greyish sky … and Cousin Silas has me in...

Brother Saturn continues his “Tales Of Space Exploration” series with a further 8 tracks … picking up where he left off in waag_rel061 and expanding the now familiar themes of travel, desolation, home and of loneliness. Drew Miller really nails it with these tracks … they have a cinematic quality that I find endearing, I found myself playing this album on repeat and losing myself to the moment. I would highly recommend you collate all 42 tracks together into one playlist, they are very...

Owlers Wood is one of my favourite longform ambient electronic pieces from Cousin Silas. It was released on the now sadly defunct netlabel Unsheep and has been unfairly languishing in obscurity until now … both Cousin Silas and I have fond memories of the piece and neither of us wanted to see the piece disappear so the decision was taken to re-release it on weareallghosts. It is an amazing piece, almost 80 minutes in length yet totally engaging. It is delicate and thoughtful, reminiscent (to...

“Let your heart take courage (waag_aa002_3)” is the third of four pieces by Stephen Briggs that are intended for the season of Advent. Courage is the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain, and the like without fear; It is a quality we need desperately today when we consider all that is happening in our beautiful world. The terrorists and the warmongers want us to fear and every Star Wars fan knows that fear is the path to the dark side: Fear leads...

The collaboration of Cousin Silas and Kevin Lyons is an inspired one … fuelled by a shared love of pulp sci-fi and leftfield music. It is a partnership that I cannot get enough of. “Interplanetary Blues (waag_rel079)” is a remarkable release: expressive, engaging and wonderfully atmospheric; it is my kind of experimental ambient electronic music. “The Stars In The Bright Sky (waag_aa002_1)” is the first of four pieces by Stephen Briggs that are intended for the season of Advent. Advent, for me, is about mystery and there is nothing more mysterious than the stars in the night sky. Briggs’ first piece conveys, through a moving looped and layered ambient guitar instrumental, this sense of mystery before settling on a tune that will be very familiar to some. The four soundscapes that will make up this second “Ambient Advent”...

As I type this on Black Friday I am sitting in my house, at a small IKEA desk, listening to a Czech radio show who have featured the music of weareallghosts. Drew Miller aka Brother Saturn is a busy guy, he creates music under a number of monikers including Brother Saturn and Chromadrift. I have enjoyed watching his growth as a musician and am proud of the Brother Saturn releases I’ve put out on weareallghosts. “Sunburst” is his latest work as Brother Saturn and it is, by my reckoning, his most accomplished to date. There is a dreamy, analogue otherworldliness about his compositions here: it is experimental ambient music that feeds the head...

Weird fiction deserves weird music. When I read H.P.Lovecraft, I must do so with weird music in my ears. Over the years, my go-to for the soundtrack has been Emmalee Crane. That is until now. “Internal Furniture (waag_rel076)” is a deliciously weird collaboration between Cousin Silas, Tim Jones and Kevin Lyons; that was conceived during a long weekend together in Yorkshire. When the cat is away, the mice will play and boy did these mice play. Fuelled by horror movies, old TV shows and pulp...

It has been a while since we had a dronescape from Cousin Silas, two months in fact, and in that time I have come to really appreciate his longform work. I know I have said this before but it needs said: they give me space, they give me time out to think and to concentrate. I guess when the one thing you crave is for some down time that when you get it, you cherish it. This dronescape, Cousin Silas’ twenty-ninth is nearly 80 minutes in length. It is a real journey in sound, one I found to be...

You’d think I would be sick of them after 28 dronescapes but nothing could be further from the truth … I love them! and I love the fact that Lyons was inspired by our favourite cousin to give longform a try. This creative cross-pollination makes me very happy indeed. Clocking in at just under 70 minutes,...

Sometimes life just doesn’t go to plan: People you hold in high regard let you down, risks you take don’t pay off and end up costing you dear, and that great idea that you had turns out to be anything but; you know what I mean. When life gets like that I try to retreat, refocus, and restart; and I greatly appreciate music that helps me do that. The twenty-eighth dronescape from Cousin Silas is one such piece of music and, to be honest, it couldn’t have come at a better time. Its rich,...

Rather than single any one track out for praise, I will say this: how can you measure such creativity? Can you even attempt to do so using minutes or megabytes alone as your evidence? It is impossible. What Cousin Silas has done here by not only creating the initial music but by seeking out and bringing together his friends so they can aid him in creating their...

A while back Colin Blake had an idea: to create 30 minute slices of sci-fi ambient, slices that could easily fit on the side of a C60 cassette tape. Since the release of “Cones” I was sold on the idea and I have looked for more. Faith (waag_rel072) is the first in a three-part series that follows Colin’s original C60 idea. Faith is presented as two “sides”: part 1 and part 2, both run near to 30 minutes each and feature some delightfully mysterious ambient music. Over the next few...

"Ancient Ocean (waag_rel071)" is a collaboration between versatile ambient musician Scott Lawlor and neo-Krautrock/kosmische act The Gateless Gate (or one half of it, Allister Thompson). Scott’s drones for this piece strongly suggested the ebb and flow of the ocean. However, making yet another oceanic ambient album wasn’t satisfying, so Allister came up with the concept of a primordial ocean, millions of years before the dawn of man. This opened up the door to all sorts of...

Earlier today I watched a programme that explored sensory deprivation using a flotation tank. The idea of nothingness was an idea both compelling and frightening to the host: sixty minutes of nothing is a rather intimidating prospect … just you and your thoughts. I wonder if that’s what some people think about longform drones … that a post-sixty minute ambient soundscape is, in some way, a scary proposition. I don’t know. Easter is, for some, a period of contemplation; a time for stepping back and reflecting on life, love, death, and resurrection. Whether you observe the Christian faith or not, this time, this Easter time, is precious: from death comes new life, the work is finished, the circle is complete. “Seven Last Words” by Scott Lawlor is a release that will aid you in this deliberation. “Sound then Silence (waag_rel064)” from Matthew VandenBrook is a wonderfully inventive album that brings a new dimension of sound to weareallghosts, something uniquely expressive and engaging. “Sound then Silence (waag_rel064)” explores more electronic and IDM-related genres, and does so in a manner that doesn’t negate VandenBrook’s ambient, drone-influenced, origins. When Cousin Silas sent the .wav file through he described his latest endeavour as rather dark … “’tis a bit dark, m’ lad” was his exact phrase. I have come to expect that when my favourite Cousin says “dark” he means wonderfully atmospheric, haunting soundscapes that thrill and engage me, the listener. Dronescape 023 is no exception. This...

Elegy [el-i-jee] noun, plural elegies. A mournful, melancholy, or plaintive poem, especially a funeral song or a lament for the dead. Tim Rowe’s suite of short, exquisitely mournful elegies are dedicated to all who mourn, all who have lost someone or something precious to them. Just as Henryk Gorecki’s third symphony brings considerable comfort to those in pain, my hope is that in some small way this suite will bring comfort too. "Tales of Space Exploration 25 - 34 (waag_rel061)” marks the next instalment of Brother Saturn's "Tales of Space Exploration" series. Drew Miller picks up where he left off in waag_rel048 … expanding his ongoing themes of travel, desolation, home and of loneliness … and further developing this series for weareallghosts. As before, Adam Howie has expertly expressed these themes in his cover art. His piece - "Detrimentum Sui - Loss of Self" - will be available for...

“Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.’” Luke 2:13-14 The third candle is known either as the candle of joy, or the ‘shepherd candle’, the section above occurring as the shepherds were given the news about the birth of Christ. When you picture the scene, you tend to think of the company of angels singing like a classical choir – eclipsing the...

Following on from where Spero left off, the Messiah’s prophesied arrival is imminent: As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet: “A voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. And all people will see God’s salvation.’” – Luke 3: 4-6 “Regnum Caelorum” is Latin for...

“Spero (waag_aa001_1-4)” is the first of four pieces by Simon Slator that are designed for the season of Advent. The four soundscapes that make up this first “Ambient Advent” collection are intended for contemplation and meditation during this busy period. Advent is synonymous with new beginnings, with the commencement or start of new things. Regardless of how you celebrate this holiday period, my wish is that the music Simon Slator has created will bring something new to you. This...

“Let no two drones be alike must be Scott's motto....at least thus far. Each drone excursion is markedly different from all others.” So says Brian Bourassa in a comment on Bandcamp. I cannot agree more and with the belated 6th instalment in his drone.excursion series, Scott Lawlor proves, if proof be really needed, this point. “Unquiet Spirits Crossing the Rubicon” is a deeply immersive, full-on longform piece; one that paints mind-pictures of wide, desolate spaces interspersed with the...

It has been a busy wee while of late and this week was no exception. When I’m tired I turn to the dronescapes of Cousin Silas - they give me respite, they provide a place to go when all I want to do is turn off the world for an hour and relax. The latest instalment in the dronescape series - the twenty-second instalment in fact - is a marvellous example of this. It’s rich, luscious tone is a balm to my weary soul. It engulfs me with the delightfully paradoxical feeling of the new familiar....

Back in 27 May 2014 waag release “Creation By Inertia (waag_rel052)” by Christopher Alvarado … an album I consider a remarkable recording and one I was proud to release on weareallghosts. I am extremely grateful to Christopher Alvarado for the opportunity to release “Modified by Inertia (waag_rmx002)”, a series of remixes of tracks from the original album along with a brand new track from Alvarado entitled “An Eternity of Eyes”. The remixes themselves demonstrate the broad church...

“Moirai (waag_rel058)” is the first release on weareallghosts from experimental electronic musician, Paul Randall aka Microvolt. It is a wonderful collection of delicate soundscapes with an intricacy that has captivated me since I first got to hear them a good few months ago. Paul Randall presents something beautiful with “Moirai (waag_rel058)”, something that fits nicely with the emerging waag ‘sound’ and yet broadens it too. This is my kind of experimental ambient: captivating and...

I’m a huge fan of David Gerard’s music and to have a 15 minute piece from him on weareallghosts is a personal delight. “Ghosts we all are (waag_sng007)” is his personal tribute to waag … he wrote it especially for my wee label and the community we've built around it ... and I will always be indebted to him for that. It is a vibrant piece that has a distinct ebb and flow, a rhythm that is wonderfully immersive and rather hypnotic. I love this piece and hope David will be back with...

Welcome to the twenty-first dronescape from Cousin Silas, another post-70 minute piece from someone who I personally think is at the top of their game. Coming off the back of his first CD on weareallghosts, this dronescape provides a fitting rest. It is an open and spacious drone filled with wonder and the anticipation of the unknown. It is a delight. I hope you enjoy Dronescape 021 as much as I do. - Tx

In the Green Light (waag_rel056) by Ade Hodges & Cousin Silas is the next instalment in an ongoing series of collaborations between the two artists. It features six earthy, nearly impenetrable walls-of-sound that are not for the claustrophobic. In the Green Light (waag_rel056) is an immense album of truly immersive beauty, one that is as spatial as it is aural. There is both a breadth and a density within these tracks that takes the listener's breath away, it is as if Hodges and Silas have...

Due to some movement in the waag schedule, I am proud to present drone.excursion.005 (waag_dex005) aka 'quiet passage' for your listening please. Scott's 5th drone in his drone.excursion series is another enjoyable longform drone, one that brings a degree of subtly to the table. Twenty. Yes, twenty! This is the twentieth instalment in Cousin Silas' Dronescape series and it sees him exploring the darker recesses of ambient music. Clocking in at 72 minutes, this is a deeply immersive journey into the unknown. I have spoken before of the association I have with Silas' work and the author H.P. Lovecraft, with the Cthulu Mythos, in particular, really sticking with me. This Dronescape reminds me of the first Lovecraft story that I read: "The Nameless City". I read...

When Colin Blake approached me with his idea for his C60 project I was intrigued. He was eager to create 30 minute slices of his particular blend of sci-fi ambient, slices that could easily fit on the side of a C60 cassette tape. When I heard the first cuts I was sold on the idea. These cuts became what you are now listening to: Side A and Side B of "Cones (waag_C60_01)". Think of these tracks in the same terms as you would a mixtape ... they are 30 minutes of continual, unbroken...

Cousin Silas and I connected many years ago when I said some nice things about his work on Shaun Blezard's seminal 'Earth Monkey Productions' netlabel. Silas had released 'Geographics' and his first two Ballard Landscapes on EMP and I had picked them up. They were my kind of atmospheres: dark, eerie & powerfully emotive ... they conjured up desolate spaces and lands dotted with Cyclopean buildings before I had read Lovecraft and knew what a Cyclopean architecture was. "Great watery...

George Carlin once said ... "Have you ever started a path? No one seems willing to do this. We don't mind using existing paths, but we rarely start new ones. Do it today. Start a path. Even if it doesn't lead anywhere." This saying resonates with me for a number of reasons, too many in fact for here & now.
