Cousin Silas’ 34th dronescape is another exceptional longform ambient soundscape. At 1 second under 73 minutes, it is an epic piece of ambience … one the draws you in and encourages to take a trip of profound personal discovery. Where it will take you, I don’t know … but it takes me to a place where I am truly present, providing me with focus for the here and now, helping me find my flow. Dronescape 034 drowns out the distractions of a very busy, demanding world … and let’s me just...

Not everyone can write longform music. It's not just a case of repeating a phrase and stretching it out for over an hour to create your drone; you have to make it interesting, and engaging ... it has to grab the listener's attention and keep it ... and it has to, dare I say, entertaining!  To make that kind of music take time and it takes talent ... and, most of all, it takes patience.  I am so glad Cousin Silas has all three!  weareallghosts are proud to present the thirty-sixth dronescape...

I always love it when the next dronescape arrives and I can dig deep ... I've been really busy with a new project in my day job and have thoroughly enjoyed diving into the detail with Cousin Silas' 37th longform dronescape to keep my company.  Simply put: it is a delight ... sonic healing for a heavy heart and a congested mind, aural balm for the times we can't quite focus; Recently the Guardian did an article on ambient music ... in it they described one particular artist as "ambient for...

Cousin Silas shows no signs of flagging as we reach his thirty-eighth ... he takes his signature longform drone sound and creates another deep, drifting soundscape with all the added flourishes that we have grown accustomed to: the waves of guitar  juxtaposed with the choral synth, the apparently random notes on the keyboard that always appear at just the right time, the flashes of brilliance that keep you coming back for more; I can't get enough of these soundscapes: I find them both relaxing...

waag_drs039 It has been a while since dronescape 038 and in that time waag has released a number of different flavours of our favourite Cousin's ambient music: remixed, one-take guitar-orientated, dub, progressive, and atmospheric; and whilst I love all that he releases, I do have a soft spot for his dronescapes.  There is something about Cousin Silas' longform ambient music that sucks me in and envelops me like a warm Pendleton blanket, comforting me and relaxing me, stilling my busy head and...

When "Of Passing Days" commenced for the first time all those months ago and I heard those first few bars … I was overcome with the sense of the new along with that familiar feeling of the familiar … it was then that it became apparent to me that this album was going to be very special … and very special it is. East (waag_rel021) is simply wonderful … my kind of wonderful … my kind of special. A double-album of music from an artist who is, in my opinion, at the top of his...

Ambientelectromelodica. If I was asked to describe in 1 word the 6 tracks on Cousin Silas' 4th release for 'weareallghosts' I would call it 'ambientelectromelodica' . Not that I need to create a new genre of music just to describe this EP ... far from it ... the music presented in waag_008 fits nicely into the ambient realm with an electroacoustic twist and a real focus on melody. I've had these tracks for a wee while now and wanted to see out 2012 with something special from Cousin Silas. The...

I really enjoyed listening to Cousin Silas' first voyage into Berlin School style longform electronic adventures, Unlimited Boundaries (waag_rel114) ... I still do, in fact, and never thought a follow-up would be so hot on its heels.       Galactic Procession (waag_rel116) follows closely in the footsteps of its predecessor albeit with a sound that is, again, reminiscent of Virgin-era Tangerine Dream or Klaus Schulze. It isn't a rehashing of the work that's come before ... either Silas or...

I have a considerable amount of love for Cousin Silas and his music. He is consistently wonderful, as an inspiration and as a friend, and I am proud to present his latest work: “Geographics 2 (waag_rel075)” … the long overdue follow up to “Geographics” on the brilliant Shaun Blezard’s now sadly dormant Earth Monkey Productions. It was Geographics that got me into Cousin Silas’ music. That and his Ballard Landscapes, which were all on EMP. And it was EMP that got me into Silas by...

Into The Dark | volume ii (waag_rel045)' is the second in a trilogy of dark, atmospheric, and rather sinister sounding ambient albums from my dear friend and everyone's favourite hoarder of electric guitars, Cousin Silas. In keeping with the first volume (waag_rel038), this is an album where Cousin Silas goes back to his darker ambient roots. It continues down the deliciously dark and deeply atmospheric rabbit-hole that waag_rel038 started down ... back before Christmas. Six tracks of longish...

I've released this early ... with no warning because its nice to get a surprise now and again ... and I hope to take a wee break for a few weeks over the Christmas period. “Micro Dronescapes Vol 1” by Cousin Silas A number of people have taken Cousin Silas’ Dronescapes series to their heart, myself included. I find them utterly fascinating and eagerly await each instalment like a child on Christmas Eve. This month, rather than release another dronescape in all its longform ambient glory, Cousin Silas has decided to put out 6 shorter pieces that all sit comfortably within the 11 to 13 minute range. These pieces are an utter delight: they are long enough to...

As I type this on Black Friday I am sitting in my house, at a small IKEA desk, listening to a Czech radio show who have featured the music of weareallghosts. It is raining outside, which is no surprise - it is November in the West of Scotland after all, and I am still nursing a concussion I received last week when I fell in the shower and hit my head on the toilet bowl. Taking this time out has really helped me to prioritise my life: I love my family and my friends, I love my job and...

Owlers Wood is one of my favourite longform ambient electronic pieces from Cousin Silas. It was released on the now sadly defunct netlabel Unsheep and has been unfairly languishing in obscurity until now … both Cousin Silas and I have fond memories of the piece and neither of us wanted to see the piece disappear so the decision was taken to re-release it on weareallghosts. It is an amazing piece, almost 80 minutes in length yet totally engaging. It is delicate and thoughtful, reminiscent (to...

Permutations is the second in Cousin Silas' remix projects. As with Recrudescence (waag_rel094) our favourite Cousin has reworked his original soundscapes (the exact ones he will not divulge to me) to create something wonderfully fresh and new that will enthral all who listen.  Permutations consists of seven tracks that vary in length for approximately six and a half minutes through to nearly seventeen. They all have Cousin Silas' delightfully gentle and languid longform vibe but their...

Cousin Silas has cooperated with some of the best artists in the ambient genre - Phillip Wilkerson, Bing Satellites, emptywhale, Chris Lynn, Gareth Jones, and Daniel Prendiville - to make some wondrous ambient soundscapes. I am particularly fond of Cousin Silas' longform pieces. Whether it is his dronescapes or the rerelease of Owlers Wood, Cousin Silas knows how to make longform music that is both interesting and engaging rather than monotonous and dull. He has raised the bar, at least for me, and graciously keeps feeding what is developing into an insatiable hunger for more. “Swirl (waag_rel082)” is his latest longform creation, one that explores the vastness of space and time within its 78 minute duration....

Cousin Silas sent me this track as a 'thank you' for the work I have done for him in 2012. What with releasing his music and designing covers for both weareallghosts and other labels ... he's a taskmaster ... but a gracious one who rewards me with his trust and with his friendship ... two things I treasure deeply. When I heard it I was overcome ... it is a beautiful track and one I just could not keep to myself. So here it is ... Cousin Silas' 'thank you' to me becomes my 'thank you' to you ......

“Through a Cobweb Strange (waag_rel069)” from Cousin Silas … affectionately referred to as “the disco album” when discussing it with Dave prior to release … is full of beats. In fact, “Through a Cobweb Strange (waag_rel069)” features fifteen downtempo tracks that combine Silas’ particular style of ambient guitar with varying degrees of percussion. I love the variety of Cousin Silas’ music and gravitate towards different elements depending on my mood. He can and does turn his...

Each track on Twang Eight is an improvisation on guitar recorded live in one-take. No edits or overdubs, just one man and his guitar pushing the boundaries of sound. And I cannot get enough! From the opening track, "Movements Of A Celestial Nature", with its otherworldly choir and oppressive dark ambient air through to the spacious, light-filled "Summer Sunrise" with its sustained guitar, this is an album that both surprises and delights the dedicated listener. Not with weareallghosts, although we do have a good share of those 3 digits, but in total. 200 releases. 200 pieces of music brought into this world for folks like you and me to enjoy. I am both astounded by this and grateful that "Unlimited Boundaries (waag_rel114)" found a home with waag. Originally released on the now defunct digitalDIZZY netlabel ... Ornithology is a delightfully dubby collaboration between Cousin Silas and Adrian Nicholls aka The Glove Of Bones. It is an album that is simply too good to languish in obscurity and one I am proud to re-release on weareallghosts. Ornithology isn't your usual release for waag: the emphasis on field recordings and found sounds is atypical ... and the drifting dubby, electronic sounds are new to us.  But, and it is a big but, this...

Weird fiction deserves weird music. When I read H.P.Lovecraft, I must do so with weird music in my ears. Over the years, my go-to for the soundtrack has been Emmalee Crane. That is until now. “Internal Furniture (waag_rel076)” is a deliciously weird collaboration between Cousin Silas, Tim Jones and Kevin Lyons; that was conceived during a long weekend together in Yorkshire. Cousin Silas' Dronescapes bring me considerable solace and the fifteenth instalment could not have come at a more necessary time. As some of you may know, I have contracted pertussis (whooping cough) and have been 'house bound' since before Christmas. There is something magical about Cousin Silas' latest dronescape that makes me think of Christmas and I'm not entirely sure I can explain it. There is an expansive quality about the piece: an openness and a lightness that makes me think of walking in freshly fallen snow, basking in that special morning light that we only see when the sun gently reflects on the white powder ... there is a quietness to this moment too, a peaceful muffled stillness ... just the crunch of your feet as you slowly...

From the opening of “Serenity”, with the piano and synths in delightful collaboration, I knew I was onto something special ... and I was not disappointed: “Into Air (waag_rel134)” by Eric Goldberg aka Er Go is simply stunning, something truly beautiful.  Eric’s emphasis on melody and the warmth of the expansive ambient soundscapes that compliment these melodies really struck me as being very special indeed. His is a soothing, joyous, uplifting sound; the counterpoint to some of the...

According to Ivan Ganza, "LV426 (waag_rel041)" documents the lonely journey to the far off system of LV426 through six utterly delightful longish-form ambient drones. I've had this album for a wee while now ... to be honest, longer than I should have ... this should have been out for others to hear far, far sooner. "LV426 (waag_rel041)" is an absolute delight to me, one for the head as well as the heart. The kind of hypnotic sci-fi drone that I lap up, one that works on its...

The 30th album on weareallghosts is an innovate collaboration between a couple of giants of ambient electronic music: Jack Hertz & Cousin Silas ... two chaps I am proud to call friends. “The Quiet Forest” features six wonderfully emotive and aurally stimulating ambient soundscapes. They are the kind of visually arresting atmospheres that got me into ambient electronic music all those years ago. The minute I heard them … I knew they would make for a fitting release on weareallghosts....

H A P P Y B I R T H D A Y ! ! ! "A haunting we will ghost" is an utterly delightful and slightly spooky 16 minute drone from Jack Hertz who prepared this track to celebrate the first birthday of weareallghosts ... it was a spontaneous expression and I am grateful to him for it. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I do. Tx H A P P Y B I R T H D A Y ! ! !

Jack Hertz is a netlabel hero. His music, particularly for Free Floating, is first class and exemplary of the ambient genre. I was honoured when he approached me with a forerunner to what you have here. I was blown away by the music he offered me and, to be honest, still am. wearenotghosts, as a netlabel, is all about the music and not about personalities. That said, it has some truly wonderful personalities within its ranks who make my life so much richer. I am delighted to add Hertz to this...

What can I say about the music of Dominic Giam aka Ketsa? I'm not sure I have the right words to describe his style of ethnic folk music infused electronica. I could call it 'fusion' but that doesn't sound right. I guess it is his music ... and it is quality music that I am proud to present on weareallghosts . I've been a fan of Giam's for a while but his recent album on Invisible Agent really did sealed the deal for me - 'Al Kemet' is awesome! (...

Kevin Lyons music just gets better and better, in my opinion and "Invisible Sounds, Inaudible Sights (waag_rel049)" is up there with one of the best albums we've ever released on weareallghosts. The album is haunting from the start with the vocal samples used in 'Solstice' taking no prisoners from the off. "Invisible Sounds, Inaudible Sights (waag_rel049)" is an ambient tour de force, each track having its own magical expression. Tracks like 'You will become like us' with...

I do what I do to encourage others bring their beauty into this world. Witnessing Kevin Lyons' growth as an artist and a maker of beautiful music has been a real pleasure for me. I really do marvel at the music he creates - it holds it's own within weareallghosts and further afield - it never ceases to amaze me. I am very proud of the music he has released on waag and am proud to call him a friend. It is with this sense of pride that I present his fourth album - "Lullabies for Strange...

As I write these liner notes, I reflect on the weekend that I have just had ... a weekend of music ... a weekend of cementing social media friendships with physical bonds ... a weekend where I got to meet in the flesh for the first time, so to speak, three chaps that I greatly admire: the musician - Dave Hughes aka Cousin Silas; the painter - Ade Hodges; and the focus of these notes - musician Kevin Lyons. Believe it or not but Dave and Kevin are the only musicians on weareallghosts that I have...

waag_rel036 "St Bertrand de Comminges is a decayed town on the spurs of the Pyrenees, not very far from Toulouse, and still nearer to Bagnères-de-Luchon." And so begins "Canon Alberic's Scrapbook" from Dr M. R. James' "Ghost Stories of an Antiquary" ... or at least my Penguin Books copy from May 1941 does. I received this copy from Cousin Silas when I stayed at his house at the end of August. This was the weekend that I met Ade Hodges and Kevin Lyons, the weekend...

"I suppose I shall have to translate this," said the antiquary to himself, as he finished copying the above lines from that rather rare and exceedingly diffuse book, the Sertum Steinfeldense Norbertinum."Well, it may as well be done first as last," and accordingly the following rendering was very quickly produced … - “The Treasure of Abbott Thomas” by Dr M.R.James Nothing beats a good ghost story at this time of the year … and nothing beats a ghost story from Dr...

Kevin Lyons and I were daydreaming together, earlier today ... dreaming of opening up a space called "The End of Time" where the beer was microbrewed, the coffee was always fresh and made with v60s, and the music was decidedly ambient in nature with Cousin Silas playing live; Every night there would be a sci-fi film on and the kitchen would serve the best pizzas at any time of the day. I guess we can dream. I love Kevin Lyons' music ... it has a special something about it that always...

waag_rel063 Releasing Kevin Lyons’ music on weareallghosts is one of my proudest achievements with the netlabel. If ever there was someone who deserved to be heard, it is him! He has an approach to his craft that makes my heart sing: he is wonderfully imaginative and channels the whole of his very interesting life into his innovative expression. “Night Visions (waag_rel063)” is an utter delight, opening with one of my favourite longform pieces - “Like City Lights, Receding” - a track...

I am a big fan of longform ambient soundscapes … I am also a big fan of Kevin Lyons’ music, so you can imagine my delight when he submitted a longform piece for my consideration. You’d think I would be sick of them after 28 dronescapes but nothing could be further from the truth … I love them! and I love the fact that Lyons was inspired by our favourite cousin to give longform a try. This creative cross-pollination makes me very happy indeed. Clocking in at just under 70 minutes,...

I always delight in releasing Kevin Lyons' music. I have a real soft spot for his music and I'm not the only one, there are a number of others who really do appreciate his Berlin School-inspired take on ambient electronic music. Kevin Lyons' latest release on weareallghosts, entitled "Organised Vibrations", is a wonderfully progressive collection of tracks that take me, as the listener, on multiple journeys of discovery. From the Tangerine Dream flavoured opener, "Aum", to...

Cousin Silas is my A&R man. He is always recommending new music to me and introducing me to some of the fabulously talent people he calls friends. Kevin Lyons is one such friend. I was bowled over when Kevin sent through the tracks that would later form the basis of "The Lost Room (waag_rel019)" , our 27th release on weareallghosts. The depth of expression contained within the 15 tracks simply stunned me … each track stood on its own merits as its own self-contained piece of...

I’ve spoken before of my love for weird fiction and the pleasure I have in pairing the writings of Lovecraft to deliciously “out there” music … with “Thirteen Things That Don’t Make Sense” is Kevin Lyons I now have a new addition to my collection. This is Kevin Lyons’ latest solo offering on weareallghosts, an album full of the kind of atmospheric ambient electronica that Lyons excels at and I just love to consume. It isn’t an album that can be easily described other than to...

waag_rel117 Leftovers. The tracks that make up this album were recorded during the week that Tim Jones & Kevin Lyons spent with Cousin Silas in deepest, darkest Yorkshire. That session, back in 2016, was a wonderful creative outpouring that spawned two albums celebrating Arthur Machen's influential weird fiction. The tracks were recorded at the same time but didn't seem to fit with the theme: they were a little too out there, a bit too noisy, slightly too space for the more earthy nature of...

Mabinogi Taking it's title from the Medieval text, The Mabinogion (a loose translation of this being Juvenile Distractions), this work takes on non-narrative considerations about passing time, the joy of travel & landscape.  Based round film and field recordings made on location in Pembroke, South Wales, this adds three new "branches" to the original stories. Each bears a Welsh language name and are broadly linked to Earth, Water & Air.  In translation:  1- Taith Hir (Long...

I am deeply honoured to present "Without Sin" from Detroit based musician Matthew VandenBrook and am proud to welcome him to the weareallghosts community. "Without Sin" is a fitting piece to be released on Good Friday, 2014 ... and while each listener will make of it what they will ... I, for one, have received remarkable inspiration from this piece as I have walked my own, personal Lenten journey. It is a dark, brooding piece of longform ambient music that threatens to...

Extropy … a noun … the theory that cultural and technological development will expand indefinitely and in an orderly progressive manner throughout the universe, the tendency of systems to grow more organised. I am proud to present a wonderfully atmospheric and very “sci-fi” (as my daughter described it) album from Matthew VandenBrook entitled “Extropy” … more ambient than his previous release, the marvellous “Sound Then Silence (waag_rel064)” release just over one year ago,...

“Sound then Silence (waag_rel064)” from Matthew VandenBrook is a wonderfully inventive album that brings a new dimension of sound to weareallghosts, something uniquely expressive and engaging. “Sound then Silence (waag_rel064)” explores more electronic and IDM-related genres, and does so in a manner that doesn’t negate VandenBrook’s ambient, drone-influenced, origins. In fact, tracks 6, 7 and 9 - “Reincarnation”, “Metempsychosis” and the title track “Sound then Silence”...

“Moirai (waag_rel058)” is the first release on weareallghosts from experimental electronic musician, Paul Randall aka Microvolt. It is a wonderful collection of delicate soundscapes with an intricacy that has captivated me since I first got to hear them a good few months ago. Paul Randall presents something beautiful with “Moirai (waag_rel058)”, something that fits nicely with the emerging waag ‘sound’ and yet broadens it too. This is my kind of experimental ambient: captivating and...
