This great recording is bringing me back to an amazing weekend of Ween in the Bay Area. First we got this special show at the tiny and intimate Independent in SF on Friday night and Saturday we got to see Ween open for the Flaming Lips at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley. The Lips are a fun live act but they should have opened for Ween.
This recording is great and gives you the feel of the intimacy of the Independent show and Ween was peaking in their performances during the early 2000’s prior to the breakup. Geaner and Deaner started this show on acoustic guitars sitting on stage right in front of us all. The acoustic sound lends itself well to the small theater and made us feel they were playing at our own house party.
Ween raged this show with so many great tunes that were first timers for me and many in attendance. They ripped the Independent for over 2 1/2 hours and we all wanted more. The middle of the set is where they thru down the more popular tunes and then went back into tearing it up with some special tunes for me including; Sketches of Winkle, Booze me up, and a 10 + minute rendition of Albino Sunburned Girl. Even if you weren’t in attendance of this show I highly recommend a listen because of the quality of the recording as well as a he outstanding performance.
