We describe degenerations of projective plane curves to curves containing a fixed line $l$ as a component, and show that $H^1({\overline V}_{n,d,m}, {\Cal O} (r))=0, r \in{\Bbb Z}$, where $V_{n,d,m}\subset {\Bbb P}^N (N = n(n+3)/2)$ is the subscheme consisting of irreducible plane curves having smooth contact of order at least m with $l$ at a fixed point p of $l$ and d nodes and no other singularities. Note: the notion of admissible schemes of plane curves, introduced for the proof of the...

The present invention is directed to an augmented thermal bus. In the present design a plurality of thermo-electric heat pumps are used to couple a source plate to a sink plate. Each heat pump is individually controlled by a model based controller. The controller coordinates the heat pumps to maintain isothermality in the source.

We present a comprehensive analysis of a linear growth model, which combines the characteristic features of the Edwards--Wilkinson and noisy Mullins equations. This model can be derived from microscopics and it describes the relaxation and growth of surfaces under conditions where the nonlinearities can be neglected. We calculate in detail the surface width and various correlation functions characterizing the model. In particular, we study the crossover scaling of these functions between the...

We extend our recent work, in which the Dirac equation with a ``(asymptotically free) Coulomb + (Lorentz scalar $\gamma_0\sigma r$) linear '' potential is used to obtain the light quark wavefunction for $q\bar Q$ mesons in the limit $m_Q\to \infty$, to estimate the decay constant $f_P$ and the mixing parameter $B$ of the pseudoscalar mesons. We compare our results for the evolution of $f_P$ and $B$ with the meson mass $M_P$ to the non-relativistic formulas for these quantities and show that...

The main source of \epe pair at $\mu^+\mu^-$ collider is incoherent process $\mu^+\mu^-\to \mu^+\mu^-\epe$ with cross section about 10 mb (at muon energy 2 TeV). The corresponding distributions are discussed briefly. These pairs give the dangerous background. The coherent production of \epe pairs here is negligibly small.

We have calculated the leading color-octet contributions to the production of $J/\psi$ particles in photon-proton collisions. Using the values for the color-octet matrix elements extracted from fits to prompt $J/\psi$ data at the Tevatron, we demonstrate that distinctive color-octet signatures should be visible in $J/\psi$ photoproduction. However, these predictions appear at variance with recent experimental data obtained at HERA, indicating that the phenomenological importance of the...

Chiral perturbation lagrangian in the framework of non-commutative geometry is considered in full detail. It is found that the explicit symmetry breaking terms appear and some relations between the coupling constants of the theory come out naturally. The WZW term also turns up on the same footing as the other terms of the chiral lagrangian.

We have obtained with the SUSI CCD camera on the ESO 3.5m NTT deep images in the BVRI bands of the field centered on the QSO BRI 1202-0725 ($z_{\it em}=4.694$). In the final combined frames the stellar images have FWHM of 1,1,0.6 and 0.65 arcsec respectively. The R and I images show clearly a galaxy $2.2''$ from the QSO, corresponding to $13h^{-1}_{50}$ kpc at $z\sim 4.5$. Possible identification with the metal absorption systems seen in the line of sight to the QSO, including the highest...

We calculate the energy spectrum of an electron moving in a two-dimensional lattice which is defined by an electric potential and an applied perpendicular magnetic field modulated by a periodic surface magnetization. The spatial direction of this magnetization introduces complex phases into the Fourier coefficients of the magnetic field. We investigate the effect of the relative phases between electric and magnetic modulation on band width and internal structure of the Landau levels.

It is shown that under certain conditions the resonant transport in mesoscopic systems can be described by modified (quantum) rate equations, which resemble the optical Bloch equations with some additional terms. Detailed microscopic derivation from the many-body Schr\"odinger equation is presented. Special attention is paid to the Coulomb blockade and quantum coherence effects in coupled quantum dot systems. The distinction between classical and quantum descriptions of resonant transport...

I consider the process $\mu^+\mu^-\to e\bar{\nu}W^+$ in the case when the effective mass of the $(e\bar\nu)$ system than the muon mass. In this case the momentum transferred from the initial muon to the $e\bar\nu$ system (the virtual neutrino momentum) can be both time--like and space--like. Since the path of integration over $k^2$ goes through a pole at $k^2=0$, it gives a divergent cross section. In the ideal case of large enough beams this divergence disappears if the finite width $\Gamma$...

An investigation of the influence of stratospheric aerosol on the performance of the atmospheric correction algorithm is nearly complete. The results indicate how the performance of the algorithm is degraded if the stratospheric aerosol is ignored. Use of the MODIS 1380 nm band to effect a correction for stratospheric aerosols was also studied. Simple algorithms such as subtracting the reflectance at 1380 nm from the visible and near infrared bands can significantly reduce the error; however,...

We consider the scalar form factor in $\tau \to K\pi \nu_\tau$ decays. It receives contributions both from the scalar resonance $K_0^*(1430)$ and from the scalar projection of off-shell vector resonances. We construct a model for the hadronic current which includes the vector resonances $K^*(892)$ and $K^*(1410)$ and the scalar resonance $K_0^*(1430)$. The parameters of the model are fixed by matching to the $O(p^4)$ predictions of chiral perturbation theory. Suitable angular correlations of...

We study the flow behind an array of equally spaced parallel cylinders. A system of Stuart-Landau equations with complex parameters is used to model the oscillating wakes. Our purpose is to identify the 6 scalar parameters which most accurately reproduce the experimental data of Chauve and Le Gal [{Physica D {\bf 58}}, pp 407--413, (1992)]. To do so, we perform a computational search for the minimum of a distance $\calj$. We define $\calj$ as the sum-square difference of the data and amplitudes...

We reconsider the problems of cosmological inflation in effective supergravity theories. A singlet field in a hidden sector is demonstrated to yield an acceptable inflationary potential, without fine tuning. In the simplest such model, the requirement of generating the microwave background anisotropy measured by COBE fixes the inflationary scale to be about $10^{14}$ GeV, implying a reheat temperature of order $10^{5}$ GeV. This is low enough to solve the gravitino problem but high enough to...

The baryon density which may be produced during the electroweak phase transition in supersymmetric models is computed, taking into account the previously neglected effects of transport, strong and weak anomalous fermion number violation, thermal scattering, and a new method for computing \cp\ violating processes during the transition. We can account for the observed baryon asymmetry, provided new \cp-violating phases are greater than $\sim 10^{-(2-4)}$, and some superpartners are light enough...

In the paper with the above title, D. T. Gillespie [Phys. Rev. A 49, 1607, (1994)] claims that the theory of Markov stochastic processes cannot provide an adequate mathematical framework for quantum mechanics. In conjunction with the specific quantum dynamics considered there, we give a general analysis of the associated dichotomic jump processes. If we assume that Gillespie's "measurement probabilities" \it are \rm the transition probabilities of a stochastic process, then the...

We study baryon spectroscopy including the effects of pseudoscalar meson exchange and one gluon exchange potentials between quarks, governed by $\alpha_s$. The non-perturbative, hyperspherical method calculations show that one can obtain a good description of the data by using a quark-meson coupling constant that is compatible with the measured pion-nucleon coupling constant, and a reasonably small value of $\alpha_s$.
