A chiral U(3)xU(3) Lagrangian, containing besides the usual meson fields their first radial excitations, is considered. The Lagrangian is derived by bosonization of the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio quark model with separable non-local interactions. The spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry is governed by the NJL gap equation. The first radial excitations of the kaon, K^* and \phi are described with the help of two form factors. The values for the decay widths of the processes K^*' --> \rho K, K^*'...

I summarize a series of studies where the underlying theme is to exploit non-axisymmetry disk structures such as bars and spiral arms. By measuring the strength of gravitational forces from these structures we can measure the mass in them. The advantage of this approach is that mass to light ratios can be constrained in a way independent of the dark matter profile. By examining a variety of types of galaxies it appears that a correlation between morphology and dark matter fraction emerges.

A key problem in text summarization is finding a salience function which determines what information in the source should be included in the summary. This paper describes the use of machine learning on a training corpus of documents and their abstracts to discover salience functions which describe what combination of features is optimal for a given summarization task. The method addresses both "generic" and user-focused summaries.

We give ansatze for solving classically the initial value constraints of general relativity minimally coupled to a scalar field, electromagnetism or Yang-Mills theory. The results include both time-symmetric and asymmetric data. The time-asymmetric examples are used to test Penrose's cosmic censorship inequality. We find that the inequality can be violated if only the weak energy condition holds.

This award supported research on modeling nearshore processes as complex systems. This research was motivated by the observations that the processes operating in the nearshore are dominantly nonlinear and dissipative and that the nearshore often exhibits behavior that is not linearly connected to forcing by incident waves. The hypothesis that the nearshore is a complex system was explored by: (1) research on the general properties of complex systems and their relationship to natural systems,...

In his great work ON WAR, Clausewitz struggled with this concept that he called friction . He used this term to describe things that happen in battle that cannot have been foreseen or planned for and which cause the commander to make decisions about events that he did not anticipate. It called for him to possess something he called genius in order to overcome these events. I will argue in this paper that the friction that he describes is intrinsic in the modern mathematical theory of Chaos,...

Quantum descriptions of many complex systems are formulated most naturally in bases of states that are not mutually orthogonal. We introduce a general and powerful yet simple approach that facilitates solving such models exactly by embedding the non-orthogonal states in a new Hilbert space in which they are by definition mutually orthogonal. This novel approach is applied to electronic transport in molecular quantum wires and is used to predict conductance antiresonances of a new type that...

We present the results of a galaxy redshift survey in the central region of the Shapley Concentration. Our total sample contains ~2000 radial velocities of galaxies both in the clusters and in the intercluster field. We reconstruct the density profile of this supercluster, calculate its overdensity and total mass. Moreover we detect a massive structure behind the Shapley Concentration, at ~30000 km/s.

We report the discovery of trailing grand-design nuclear spiral structure in the spiral galaxy NGC 5248. Two tightly-wound red spiral arms, with widths less than 1 arcsec (~75 pc), emanate at 1 arcsec outside the quiescent nucleus of the galaxy, and can be followed for 3 arcsec, appearing to end before the radius of the circumnuclear starburst "ring", which is at 5--6 arcsec or around 400 parsec. Combining our near-infrared Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope adaptive optics results with...

Using the experimental upper bounds on l \to l' + gamma and mu^- + Ti \to e^- + Ti as constraints on the flavor changing slepton mass insertions, we predict the possible ranges of the upper limits on the branching ratios of other LFV processes such as l \to 3l', tau \to l_{i\neq 3} + pi^0 (or eta, rho^0, phi), Z^0 \to l_i bar{l}_{j\neq i}, and...

Rahr's decision in 1887 to increase production by adding new equipment precipitated a terrible tragedy, causing injury and death to several families. August Delforge, who built and maintained plumbing and steam fixtures, was hired by Rahr to repair and install new fittings. These new fittings...

We show that a recently proposed [J. Fleischer and P.H. Diamond, {\em Phys. Rev. We consider two different versions of gauged WZW theories with the exceptional groups and gauged with any of theirs null subgroups. By constructing suitable automorphism, we establish the equivalence of these two theories. On the other hand our automorphism, relates the two dual irreducible Riemannian globally symmetric spaces with different characters based on the corresponding exceptional Lie groups.

We discuss the formal structure of a functional measure for Gauge Theories preserving the Slavnov-Taylor identity in the presence of Gribov horizons. Our construction defines a gauge-fixed measure in the framework of the lattice regularization by dividing the configuration space into patches with different gauge-fixing prescriptions. Taking into account the bounds described by Dell'Antonio and Zwanziger we discuss the behaviour of the measure in the continuum limit for finite space-time volume.

We give a proof of the KAM theorem on the existence of invariant tori for weakly perturbed Hamiltonian systems, based on Thirring's approach for Hamiltonians that are quadratic in the action variables. The main point of this approach is that the iteration of canonical transformations on which the proof is based stays within the space of quadratic Hamiltonians. We show that Thirring's proof for nondegenerate Hamiltonians can be adapted to Hamiltonians with degenerate twist. This case, in fact,...

The mode frequencies of a weakly interacting Bose gas in a magnetic trap are studied as a function of the anisotropy of the trap. As in earlier works the generalized Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov equations within the Popov approximation (HFB-Popov) are used for our calculations. The new feature of our work is the combined use of a mode expansion in a finite basis and a semiclassical approximation of the highly excited states. The results are applied to check the accuracy of the recently suggested...

Extending previous QCD Hamiltonian studies, we present a new renormalization procedure which generates an effective Hamiltonian for the gluon sector. The formulation is in the Coulomb gauge where the QCD Hamiltonian is renormalizable and the Gribov problem can be resolved. We utilize elements of the Glazek and Wilson regularization method but now introduce a continuous cut-off procedure which eliminates non-local counterterms. The effective Hamiltonian is then derived to second order in the...
