A new theory for gamma-ray burst radiation is presented. In this theory, magnetic fields and relativistic electrons are created through plasma processes arising as a relativistic shell passes through the interstellar medium. The gamma-rays are produced through synchrotron self-Compton emission. It is found that shocks do not arise in this theory, and that efficient gamma-ray emission only occurs for a high Lorentz factor and a high-density interstellar medium. The former explains the absence of...

We first review previous work on anisotropic flow at the AGS and SPS. Then the physics related to flow is discussed as well as the interaction of flow with other non-flow measurements. From 40k RQMD and 100k HIJING events predictions for anisotropic flow at RHIC are presented. Using the STAR detector acceptance, estimates for the resolution obtainable with STAR are shown. We conclude that it should be possible to obtain good measurements for elliptic flow with either the STAR main TPC or...

We review the experimental constraints on additional macroscopic Yukawa forces for interaction ranges below 1 cm., and summarize several theoretical predictions of new forces in this region. An experiment using 1 kHz mechanical oscillators as test masses should be sensitive to much of the parameter space covered by the predictions.

We give an example of geometric construction (via Hecke correspondences) of certain representations of the affine Lie algebra $\hat{gl}_n$. The construction is similar to the one of [FK] for the Lie algebra $sl_n$. Given a surface with a smooth embedded curve $C$ we consider the moduli spaces $K_\alpha$ of rank $n$ parabolic sheaves satisfying certain conditions. The top dimensional irreducible components of $K_\alpha$ are numbered by the isomorphism classes of $\alpha$-dimensional nilpotent...

We study a 3-parametric family of stochastic point processes on the one-dimensional lattice originated from a remarkable family of representations of the infinite symmetric group. We prove that the correlation functions of the processes are given by determinantal formulas with a certain kernel. The kernel can be expressed through the Gauss hypergeometric function; we call it the hypergeometric kernel. In a scaling limit our processes approximate the processes describing the decomposition of...

We provide compelling evidence that a previously introduced model of non-perturbative 2d Lorentzian quantum gravity exhibits (two-dimensional) flat-space behaviour when coupled to Ising spins. The evidence comes from both a high-temperature expansion and from Monte Carlo simulations of the combined gravity-matter system. This weak-coupling behaviour lends further support to the conclusion that the Lorentzian model is a genuine alternative to Liouville quantum gravity in two dimensions, with a...

The properties of high temperature superconducting compounds, mostly in the form of thin films and thin film devices have been investigated. The main focus of the research was on the use of ozone-assisted molecular beam epitaxy in a shuttered growth mode to produce such films and structures. In addition to superconducting films, non-superconducting mixed-valence manganite perovskites, which exhibit so-called colossal magnetoresistance were grown. The manganites are unique in that their charge...

We compare the behaviour of a small truncated coupled map lattice with random inputs at the boundaries with that of a large deterministic lattice essentially at the thermodynamic limit. We find exponential convergence for the probability density, predictability, power spectrum, and two-point correlation with increasing truncated lattice size. This suggests that spatio-temporal embedding techniques using local observations cannot detect the presence of spatial extent in such systems and hence...

New types of irreducible second order Darboux transformations for the one dimensional Schroedinger equation are described. The main feature of such transformations is that the transformation functions have the eigenvalues grater then the ground state energy of the initial (or reference) Hamiltonian. When such a transformation is presented as a chain of two first order transformations, an intermediate potential is singular and therefore intermediate Hamiltonian can not be Hermitian while the...

We point out that the lower bound on the primordial magnetic field required to seed the galactic dynamo is significantly relaxed in an open universe or in a universe with a positive cosmological constant. It is shown that, for reasonable cosmological parameters, primordial seed fields of strength 10^{-30} Gauss or less at the time of galaxy formation could explain observed galactic magnetic fields. As a consequence, mechanisms of primordial magnetic seed-field generation that have previously...

Compact canonical quantization on the light cone (DLCQ) is examined in the limit of infinite periodicity lenth L. Pauli Jordan commutators are found to approach continuum expressions with marginal non causal terms of order $L^{-3/4}$ traced back to the handling of IR divergence through the elimination of zero modes. In contrast direct quantization in the continuum (CLCQ) in terms of field operators valued distributions is shown to provide the standard causal result while at the same time...

We study the dynamical description of gravity, the appropriate definition of the scalar field energy-momentum tensor, and the interrelation between them in scalar-tensor theories of gravity. We show that the quantity which one would naively identify as the energy-momentum tensor of the scalar field is not appropriate because it is spoiled by a part of the dynamical description of gravity. A new connection can be defined in terms of which the full dynamical description of gravity is explicit,...

We formulate the theory of the perturbation caused by an adsorbate upon the substrate lattice in terms of a local modification of the interatomic potential energy around the adsorption site, which leads to the relaxation of substrate atoms. We apply the approach to CO chemisorption on close-packed metal surfaces, and show that the adsorbate-adsorbate interaction and a variety of other properties can be well described by a simple model.

Memory test data were analyzed to illustrate the Gibbs sampling procedure. Simulated data sets were analyzed using Gibbs sampling and the marginal Bayesian method. The marginal Bayesian method combined with the expected a posteriori estimation of ability yielded consistently smaller root mean square errors and better bias...

The HI Parkes Zone of Avoidance Survey is a 21 cm blind search with the multibeam receiver on the 64-m radiotelescope, looking for galaxies hidden behind the southern Milky Way. The first, shallow (15 mJy rms) phase of the survey has uncovered 107 galaxies, two-thirds of which were previously unknown. The addition of these galaxies to existing extragalactic catalogs allows the connectivity of a very long, thin filament across the Zone of Avoidance (ZOA) within 3500 km/s to become evident. No...

We develop a transfer matrix method to compute exactly the spin-spin correlation functions of Bethe lattice spin models in the external magnetic field h and for any temperature T. We first compute the correlation function for the most general spin - S Ising model, which contains all possible single-ion and nearest-neighbor pair interactions. This general spin - S Ising model includes the spin-1/2 simple Ising model and the Blume-Emery-Griffiths (BEG) model as special cases. From the spin-spin...

In (2+1)-dimensional QED with a Chern-Simons term, we show that spontaneous magnetization occurs in the context of finite density vacua, which are the lowest Landau levels fully or half occupied by fermions. Charge condensation is shown to appear so as to complement the fermion anti-fermion condensate, which breaks the flavor U(2N) symmetry and causes fermion mass generation. The solutions to the Schwinger-Dyson gap equation show that the fermion self-energy contributes to the induction of a...

In any gauge model with spontaneous symmetry breakdown the gauge boson masses and their mixings are not independent quantities. They are interconnected through the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the Higgs sector. We discuss the low-energy experiments, namely electron-hadron, neutrino-hadron and neutrino-electron processes in the frame of the Manifest Left-Right Symmetric model and show the impact of these dependencies on the possible heavy gauge boson masses and mixings.
