We report on the filament of ionized gas found at the NE periphery of M87, the second brightest elliptical galaxy in the Virgo cluster. The object lies at 3.16 arcmin (15.7 kpc) projected distance of the nucleus of M87, and it coincides in position with the Eastern radio lobe of M87. Long slit spectroscopy confirmed the gaseus nature of this object, showing Hbeta, [OIII], [OI], [NII], Halpha and [SII] lines, without any underlying continuum. The redshift of the object, V = 1170+-25 km/s, agrees...

The current philosophy of impact hazard considers the danger from small asteroids negligible. However, several facts claim for a revision of this philosophy. In this paper, some of these facts are reviewed and discussed. It is worth noting that while the impact frequency of Tunguska-like objects seems to be higher than previously estimated, the atmospheric fragmentation is more efficient than commonly thought. Indeed, data recorded from airbursts show that small asteroids breakup at dynamical...

There are different ways for fluid flow to become turbulent, but usually many instabilities take place before that. Among these instabilities the transition from laminar flow to vortex shedding carries significant practical importance. Here we study a flow, where at high enough flow rates, vortices are generated by a fixed obstacle (cylinder), which penetrates a flowing, quasi-two dimensional soap film. We present experimental results that demonstrate that the transition from laminar flow to a...

The effects of the electron-electron interactions in a graphene layer are investigated. It is shown that short range couplings are irrelevant, and scale towards zero at low energies, due to the vanishing of density of states at the Fermi level. Topological disorder enhances the density of states, and can lead to instabilities. In the presence of sufficiently strong repulsive interactions, p-wave superconductivity can emerge.

Scientists who want to monitor the state of our global climate may have to look no farther than the coastal ice that surrounds the Earth’s largest island.A NASA study of Greenland’s ice sheet reveals that it is rapidly thinning. In an article published in the July 21 issue of Science, Bill Krabill, project scientist at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Wallops Flight Facility, Wallops Island, VA, reports that the frozen area around Greenland is thinning, in some places, at a rate of...

I investigate the use of Pearson's chi-square statistic, the Maximum Likelihood Ratio statistic for Poisson distributions, and the chi-square-gamma statistic (Mighell 1999, ApJ, 518, 380) for the determination of the goodness-of-fit between theoretical models and low-count Poisson-distributed data. I demonstrate that these statistics should not be used to determine the goodness-of-fit with data values of 10 or less. I modify the chi-square-gamma statistic for the purpose of improving its...

A bulk polycrystalline sample of YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-\delta} (\delta \approx 0.1) has been irradiated by \gamma-rays with ^{60}Co source. Non-monotonic behavior of T_c (defined as the temperature at which normal resistance is halved) with increasing irradiation dose \Phi (up to about 220 MR) is observed: T_c decreases at low doses (\Phi \leq 50 MR) from initial value (\approx 93 K) by about 2 K and then rises, forming minimum. At highest doses (\Phi \geq 120 MR) T_c goes down again. The...

We develop a semiclassical density functional theory in the context of quantum dots. Coulomb blockade conductance oscillations have been measured in several experiments using nanostructured quantum dots. The statistical properties of these oscillations remain puzzling, however, particularly the statistics of spacings between conductance peaks. To explore the role that residual interactions may play in the spacing statistics, we consider many-body systems which include electron-electron...

We illustrate that both of massless pseudoscalar meson fields and constitutent quark fields are dynamical field degrees of freedom in energy region between chiral symmetry spontaneously broken scale and quark confinement scale. This physical configuration yields a renormalization running axial coupling constant $g_{_A}(\mu)$. The one-loop renormalization prediction $g_{_A}(\mu=m_{_N})=0.75$ and $g_{_A}(\mu=m_\pi)=0.96$ agree with $\beta$ decay of neutron and $\pi^0\to\gamma\gamma$ respectively....

We present extensive multi-colour (UBVR_CI_C) photometry of the optical afterglow of GRB 980519. Upon discovery, 8.3 hours after the burst, the source was decaying as a power law, (t-t_GRB)^alpha, with a rapid decay rate alpha_1 = - 1.73+-0.04. About 13 hours after the burst a steepening of the light-curve to alpha_2 = -2.22+-0.04 was observed. Within the framework of current afterglow models, we argue that the rapid initial decline, the `break' in the light curve, and the spectral properties...

A transport theory for atomic matter waves in low-dimensional waveguides is outlined. The thermal fluctuation spectrum of magnetic near fields leaking out of metallic microstructures is estimated. The corresponding scattering rate for paramagnetic atoms turns out to be quite large in micrometer-sized waveguides (approx. 100/s). Analytical estimates for the heating and decoherence of a cold atom cloud are given. We finally discuss numerical and analytical results for the scattering from static...

Theories which include neutrinos in large extra dimensions can be constrained by nuclear beta decay experiments. We examine universality of beta decay strengths of Fermi transitions. From this we find that the extra dimensional Yukawa coupling for a higher dimensional scale of 10 TeV, and two extra dimensions can be constrained to y < 1. Kinematic implications are also discussed. In particular, an extra dimensional scenario will produce a tritium decay endpoint spectrum with a different...

We extend standard k.p theory to take into account periodic perturbations which are rapidly oscillating with a wavelength of a few lattice constants. Our general formalism allows us to explicitly consider the Bragg reflections due to the perturbation-induced periodicity. As an example we calculate the effective masses in the lowest two conduction bands of spontaneously ordered GaInP_2 as a function of the degree of ordering. Comparison of our results for the lowest conduction band to available...

We studied, theoretically, the optical absorption spectra for a slightly asymmetric double quantum well (DQW), in the presence of electric and magnetic fields. Recent experimental results for a 10.18/3.82/9.61 nm GaAs Al(_{.33} )Ga(_{.67})As DQW show clearly the different behavior in the luminescence peaks for the indirect exciton (IX) and left direct exciton (DX) as a function of the external electric field. We show that the presence of a peak near the (DX) peak, attributed to an impurity...

We study a half filled ladder of spinless fermions. We show that contrarily to a single chain, the ladder becomes a Mott insulator for arbitrarily small repulsive interactions. We obtain the full phase diagram and physical quantities such as the charge gap. We show that there is only a single insulating phase for repulsive interactions, regardless of the stength of the interchain hopping and single chain Mott gap. There is thus no confinement-deconfinement transition in this system but a simple...

The fermion generation puzzle has survived into this century as one of the great mysteries in particle physics. We consider here a possible solution within the Standard Model framework based on a nonabelian generalization of electric-magnetic duality. First, by constructing in loop space a nonabelian generalization of the abelian dual transform (Hodge *), one finds that a ``magnetic'' symmetry exists also in classical Yang-Mills theory dual to the original (``electric'') gauge symmetry....

We review the two sources of hyperon enhancement in the dual parton model: strings originating from diquark-antidiquark pairs in the nucleon sea and net baryons containing two or three sea quarks with a yield controlled by the observed stopping. We show that adding final state interactions (including strangeness exchange reactions as well as the inverse reactions required by detailed balance) with a single averaged cross-section $\sigma=0.2$ mb, we can explain the observed hyperon enhancement...

We illustrate the graphical method that gives the constraints on the parameters appearing in the neutrino oscillation experiments and the neutrinoless double beta decay. This method is applicable in three and four generations. Though this method is valid for more general case, we examine explicitly the cases in which the CP violating factors take $\pm 1$ or $\pm i$ in the neutrinoless double beta decay for illustrative clearance. We also discuss some mass matrix models which lead to the above...

Using RXTE/PCA data, we have studied the time lag (TL) properties of a sample of four accreting neutron stars (NSs), namely 1E1724-3045, GS1826-238, 4U1705-44 and 4U1728-34. The aim of the study is to identify the spectral and timing state(s) in which TLs are detected. Along this work, we have discovered TLs between the 7-40 keV hard and 2-7 keV soft photons from 4U1728-34 with amplitudes similar to those seen in 4U1705-44 (i.e. 2 ms at 5 Hz). We show that the TLs are only seen in the low...

High order perturbation theory corrections to the superfluid transition temperature in a weakly interacting Fermi gas with repulsive interaction are calculated. This involves calculating the contributions of third and fourth order diagrams in the gas parameter and taking into account effects of retardation. The contributions from both second, third and fourth orders result in the effective attraction in p-wave channel. It is shown that the critical temperature is mainly determined by second and...

The functional variation and the Lie variation of a Lagrangian density, depending on components of tensor fields (with finite rank) and their first and second covariant derivatives are established. A review is given of the very recent developments in the fields of real and virtual Compton scattering off the nucleon. Both real and virtual Compton scattering reactions are discussed at low outgoing photon energy where one accesses polarizabilities of the nucleon. The real Compton scattering at large momentum transfer is discussed which is asymptotically a tool to obtain information on the valence quark wave function of the nucleon. The rapid developments in deeply virtual Compton scattering...

After reviewing recent results on symplectic Lefschetz pencils and symplectic branched covers of CP^2, we describe a new construction of maps from symplectic manifolds of any dimension to CP^2 and the associated monodromy invariants. We also show that a dimensional induction process makes it possible to describe any compact symplectic manifold by a series of words in braid groups and a word in a symmetric group.

A 'forward walking' Green's Function Monte Carlo algorithm is used to obtain expectation values for SU(3) lattice Yang-Mills theory in (3+1) dimensions. The ground state energy and Wilson loops are calculated, and the finite-size scaling behaviour is explored. Crude estimates of the string tension are derived, which agree with previous results at intermediate couplings; but more accurate results for larger loops will be required to establish scaling behaviour at weak coupling.
