We study charge and spin transport through an interacting quantum wire, caused by backscattering off an effective impurity potential with a periodic time-dependence. The adiabatic regime of this pump for charge and spin is shown to depend on the presence of interactions in the wire. Using symmetry and scaling properties of the quantum wire Hamiltonian we relate the charge $Q$ and spin $S$ transported through the wire in a period to an integral involving quasi-static backscattering conductances....

In January 2002, the Bush Administration delivered the second Nuclear Posture Review (NPR) to Congress; the first such review was completed in 1994 Long before the II September 2001 terrorist attacks against New York City and Washington, D.C., the Defense Department's senior civilian and military leaders began an unprecedented debate and discussion about where America's military should go and what it should look like in the years ahead. Out of those debates, senior civilian and military leaders...

Military operations since Desert Storm have taken an almost ultramodern style of warfare a step away from the notion of sequential operations of the past, throughout the successful concept of parallel warfare during the Gulf War, toward a transformational strategy of network-centric warfare (NCW) now being adopted by the Department of Defense. The key technologies associated with NCW are information superiority, stealth, precision, engagement, combination of manned and unmanned aerial...

Weak decays of charm mesons has been used for studies of light quark spectroscopy, with particular emphasis on the J^{PC}=0^{++} states. Recent results on light scalars are summarized and some conceptual issues are discussed, especially the relation between charm decays and hadronic production.

The Balloon Borne Experiment with a Superconducting Spectrometer (BESS) has measured the energy spectrum of cosmic-ray antiprotons between 0.18 and 4.20 GeV in eight flights between 1993 and 2002. Above about 1 GeV, models in which antiprotons are secondary products of the interactions of primary cosmic rays with the interstellar gas agree with the BESS antiproton spectrum. Below 1 GeV, the data show a possible excess antiproton flux compared to secondary model predictions, suggesting the...

We report the first observation of azimuthal beam-spin asymmetries in hard electroproduction of real photons off nuclei. Attributed to the interference between the Bethe-Heitler process and the deeply-virtual Compton scattering process, the asymmetry gives access to the latter at the amplitude level. This process appears to be the theoretically cleanest way to access generalized parton distributions. The data presented here have been accumulated by the HERMES experiment at DESY, scattering the...

A unified presentation is given on the use of dispersion relations in the real and virtual Compton scattering processes off the nucleon. The way in which dispersion relations for Compton scattering amplitudes establish connections between low energy nucleon structure quantities, such as polarizabilities or anomalous magnetic moments, and the nucleon excitation spectrum is reviewed. We discuss various sum rules for forward real and virtual Compton scattering, such as the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn...

Effective hadron models commonly require the computation of functional determinants. In the static case these are one--loop vacuum polarization energies, known as Casimir energies. In this talk I will present general methods to efficiently compute renormalized one--loop vacuum polarization energies and energy densities and apply these methods to construct soliton solutions within a variational approach. This calculational method is particularly useful to study singular limits that emerge in the...

We show, in great detail, how the perturbative tools of quantum field theory allow one to rigorously obtain: a ``categorified'' Faa di Bruno type formula for multiple composition, an explicit formula for reversion and a proof of Lagrange-Good inversion, all in the setting of multivariable power series. We took great pains to offer a self-contained presentation that, we hope, will provide any mathematician who wishes, an easy access to the wonderland of quantum field theory.

The scattering matrix was measured for microwave cavities with two antennas. It was analyzed in the regime of overlapping resonances. The theoretical description in terms of a statistical scattering matrix and the rescaled Breit-Wigner approximation has been applied to this regime. The experimental results for the auto-correlation function show that the absorption in the cavity walls yields an exponential decay. This behavior can only be modeled using a large number of weakly coupled channels....

Using optical Ramsey interferometry, we precisely measure the laser-induced AC-stark shift on the $S_{1/2}$ -- $D_{5/2}$ "quantum bit" transition near 729 nm in a single trapped $^{40}$Ca$^+$ ion. We cancel this shift using an additional laser field. This technique is of particular importance for the implementation of quantum information processing with cold trapped ions. As a simple application we measure the atomic phase evolution during a $n \times 2\pi$ rotation of the quantum bit.

We investigate various aspects of the plane wave geometries obtained from D1/D5-brane system. We study the effect of Hopf-duality on the supersymmetries preserved by the Penrose limit of $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$ geometry. In type-IIB case, we first show that the Penrose limit makes the size of the `would-be' internal torus comparable to that of the other directions. Based on this observation, we consider, in taking the Penrose limit, the generalization of the null geodesic to incorporate the...

It has been projected that the need for a short-range mid-sized, aircraft is increasing. The future strategy to decrease long-haul flights will increase the demand for short-haul flights. Since passengers prefer to meet their destinations quickly, airlines will increase the frequency of flights, which will reduce the passenger load on the aircraft. If a point-to-point flight is not possible, passengers will prefer only a one-stop short connecting flight to their final destination. A...

Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer spectra of 22 Galactic halo stars are studied to determine the amount of O VI in the Galactic halo between ~0.3 and \~10 kpc from the Galactic mid-plane. Strong O VI 1031.93 A absorption was detected toward 21 stars, and a reliable 3 sigma upper limit was obtained toward HD 97991. The weaker member of the O VI doublet at 1037.62 A could be studied toward only six stars. The observed columns are reasonably consistent with a patchy exponential O VI...

We obtain a new version of the Uncertainty Principle for functions with Fourier transforms supported on a lacunary set of intervals. This is a generalization of Zygmund's theorem on lacunary trigonometric series to the real line in the spirit of the Logvinenko-Sereda theorem for relatively dense sets.

Particle production in Au+Au collisions has been measured in the PHOBOS experiment at RHIC for a range of collision energies. Three empirical observations have emerged from this dataset which require theoretical examination. First, there is clear evidence of limiting fragmentation. Namely, particle production in central Au+Au collisions, when expressed as $dN/d\eta'$ ($\eta' \equiv \eta-y_{beam}$), becomes energy independent at high energy for a broad region of $\eta'$ around $\eta'=0$. This...

We propose that perturbative quantum field theory and string theory can be consistently modified in the infrared to eliminate, in a radiatively stable manner, tadpole instabilities that arise after supersymmetry breaking. This is achieved by deforming the propagators of classically massless scalar fields and the graviton so as to cancel the contribution of their zero modes. In string theory, this modification of propagators is accomplished by perturbatively deforming the world-sheet action with...

We derive a closed expression for the linear conductance through a quantum dot in the Coulomb-blockade regime in the presence of a constant exchange interaction. With this expression we calculate the temperature dependence of the conductance peak-height and peak-spacing statistics. Using a realistic value of the exchange interaction, we find significantly better agreement with experimental data as compared with the statistics obtained in the absence of an exchange interaction.

In this revised reply to quant-ph/0211165, I address the question of the validity of my results in greater detail, by comparing my predictions to those of the Silberfarb-Deutsch model, and I deal at greater length with the beam area paradox. As before, I conclude that my previous results are an (order-of-magnitude) accurate estimate of the error probability introduced in quantum logical operations by the quantum nature of the laser field. While this error will typically (for a paraxial beam) be...
