Making use of the quantum Monte Carlo method based on the worm algorithm, we study the thermodynamic behavior of the S=1/2 isotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice in a uniform magnetic field varying from very small values up to the saturation value. The field is found to induce a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at a finite temperature, above which a genuine XY behavior in an extended temperature range is observed. The phase diagram of the system is drawn, and the...

We construct Chern-Weil classes on infinite dimensional vector bundles with structure group contained in the algebra $\cl[\leq 0](M, E)$ of non-positive order classical pseudo-differential operators acting on a finite rank vector bundle $E$ over a closed manifold $M$. Mimicking the finite dimensional Chern-Weil construction, we replace the ordinary trace on matrices by linear functionals on $\cl[\leq 0] (M, E)$ built from the leading symbols of the operators. The corresponding Chern classes...

We study in optimal control the important relation between invariance of the problem under a family of transformations, and the existence of preserved quantities along the Pontryagin extremals. Several extensions of Noether theorem are provided, in the direction which enlarges the scope of its application. We formulate a more general version of Noether's theorem for optimal control problems, which incorporates the possibility to consider a family of transformations depending on several...

We have measured the dynamics of individual magnetic fluxoids entering and leaving photolithographically patterned thin film rings of the underdoped high-temperature superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$, using a variable sample temperature scanning SQUID microscope. These results can be qualitatively described using a model in which the fluxoid number changes by thermally activated nucleation of a Pearl vortex in, and transport of the Pearl vortex across, the ring wall.

We present the study of ten random realizations of a density field characterized by a cosmological power spectrum P(k) at redshift z=50. The reliability of such initial conditions for n-body simulations are tested with respect to their correlation properties. The power spectrum P(k), and the mass variance sigmaM(r) do not show detectable deviations from the desired behavior in the intermediate range of scales between the mean interparticle distance and the simulation volume. The estimator for...

I show that it does not seem possible to change modern nuclear Hamiltonians to bind a tetraneutron without destroying many other successful predictions of those Hamiltonians. This means that, should a recent experimental claim of a bound tetraneutron be confirmed, our understanding of nuclear forces will have to be significantly changed. I also point out some errors in previous theoretical studies of this problem.

A colder than normal North American winter saw the entire surface areas of Lakes Superior, Huron, and Erie frozen over for the first time in years. The cold has delayed the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway and will likely delay the start of the growing season near the Great Lake shorelines. Although the open surface waters of Lake Michigan did not freeze this season, the southern portion experienced a higher than normal amount of ice. Winds and currents drove broken pieces of ice from the...

American (and English language) television has gradually become a more influential factor in the way people are learning English overseas, as access to cable programming has widely spread across cities, regardless of socio-cultural backgrounds. What students watch on TV affects not only how they are learning the language, but also their cultural constructions about their local and international societies. Oftentimes, their visions of reality are exactly those that movies and series portray....

Big bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies independently predict the universal baryon density. Comparing their predictions will provide a fundamental test on cosmology. Using BBN and the CMB together, we will be able to constrain particle physics, and predict the primordial, light element abundances. These future analyses hinge on new experimental and observational data. New experimental data on nuclear cross sections will help reduce theoretical...

Supernova simulations to date have assumed that during core collapse electron captures occur dominantly on free protons, while captures on heavy nuclei are Pauli-blocked and are ignored. We have calculated rates for electron capture on nuclei with mass numbers A=65-112 for the temperatures and densities appropriate for core collapse. We find that these rates are large enough so that, in contrast to previous assumptions, electron capture on nuclei dominates over capture on free protons. This...

This is a survey on the relation between homological properties of the Frobenius endomorphism and finiteness of various homological dimensions of the ring or of modules over it, such as global dimension and projective dimension. We begin with Kunz's surprising result in 1969 that the regularity of a Noetherian local ring is equivalent to the flatness of its Frobenius endomorphism, as well as the subsequent generalizations to the module setting by Peskine and Szpiro and continue up through the...

We analyze $N=2,1,0$ vacua of type IIB string theory on $K3\times T^2/Z_2$ in presence of three-form fluxes from a four dimensional supergravity viewpoint. The quaternionic geometry of the $K3$ moduli space together with the special geometry of the NS and R-R dilatons and of the $T^2$-complex structure moduli play a crucial role in the analysis. The introduction of fluxes corresponds to a particular gauging of N=2, D=4 supergravity. Our results agree with a recent work of Tripathy and Trivedi....

We study the class of endlessly single-mode all-silica photonic crystal fibers with a triangular air-hole cladding. We consider the sensibility to longitudinal nonuniformities and the consequences and limitations for realizing low-loss large-mode area photonic crystal fibers. We also discuss the dominating scattering mechanism and experimentally we confirm that both macro and micro-bending can be the limiting factor.

Heat capacities of Na_N, N = 13, 20, 55, 135, 142, and 147, clusters have been investigated using a many-body Gupta potential and microcanonical molecular dynamics simulations. Negative heat capacities around the cluster melting-like transition have been obtained for N = 135, 142, and 147, but the smaller clusters (N = 13, 20, and 55) do not show this peculiarity. By performing a survey of the cluster potential energy landscape (PEL), it is found that the width of the distribution function of...

The study of Coulomb excitation of 11Be to the first excited state in intermediate energy collisions with heavy targets is presented. The existing experimental data are reanalised by including the probability of projectile survival into the calculation of Coulomb excitation cross sections. The survival probabilities are calculated using a recently developed global optical model potential tailored in line with the double folding model. We try to minimize the number of qubits needed to factor an integer of n bits using Shor's algorithm on a quantum computer. We introduce a circuit which uses 2n+3 qubits and O(n^3 lg(n)) elementary quantum gates in a depth of O(n^3) to implement the factorization algorithm. The circuit is computable in polynomial time on a classical computer and is completely general as it does not rely on any property of the number to be factored. We present a family of algorithms for the fast determination of reaction paths and barriers in phase space and the computation of the corresponding rates. The method requires the reaction times be large compared to the microscopic time, irrespective of the origin - energetic, entropic, cooperative - of the timescale separation. It lends itself to temperature cycling as in simulated annealing and to activation-relaxation routines. The dynamics is ultimately based on supersymmetry methods used...

Our well-sampled light curve, consisting of 18 points in the first 10 min and a total of 28 useful observations in the first 2.5 hr after the GRB, directly shows for the first time a break at $t \approx 10$ min. We study the effect of turbulent flow on the droplet growth in a cloud during the condensational phase. Using the air parcel model, we describe analytically how the distribution of droplets over sizes evolves at the different stages of parcel movement. We show that turbulent random walk superimposed on an accelerated ascent of the parcel make the relative width of droplet distribution to grow initially as $t^{1/2}$ and then decay as $t^{-3/2}$.

We present a simple electronic circuit which provides negative group delays for band-limited, base-band pulses. It is shown that large time advancement comparable to the pulse width can be achieved with appropriate cascading of negative-delay circuits but eventually the out-of-band gain limits the number of cascading. The relations to superluminality and causality are also discussed.

The first goal of this article is to study the validity of the Zwanzig model for liquid crystals to predict transitions to inhomogeneous phases (like smectic and columnar) and the way polydispersity affects these transitions. The second goal is to analyze the extension of the Zwanzig model to a binary mixture of rods and plates. The mixture is symmetric in that all particles have equal volume and length-to-breadth ratio, $\kappa$. The phase diagram containing the homogeneous phases as well as...

We study the frictional drag due to Coulomb and phonon mediated electron-electron interaction in a double layer electron system exposed to a perpendicular magnetic field. Within the random phase approximation we calculate the dispersion relation of the intra Landau level magnetoplasmons at finite temperatures and distinguish their contribution to the magnetodrag. We calculate the transresistivity $\rho_{Drag}$ as a function of magnetic field $B$, temperature $T$, and interlayer spacing $\Lambda...
