We establish a lower estimate for the Kobayashi-Royden infinitesimal pseudometric on an almost complex manifold $(M,J)$ admitting a bounded strictly plurisubharmonic function. We apply this result to study the boundary behaviour of the metric on a strictly pseudoconvex domain in $M$ and to give a sufficient condition for the complete hyperbolicity of a domain in $(M,J)$. Finally we obtain the regularity up to the bounday of $J$-holomorphic discs attached to a totally real submanifold in $M$.

An introduction into the fundamental quests addressed in space missions is given. These quests are the exploration of the relativistic gravitational field, the Universality of Free Fall, the Universality of the Gravitational Redshift, Local Lorentz Invariance, the validity of Einstein's field equations, etc. In each case, the correspoding missions take advantage of the space conditions which are essential for the improvement of the accuracy of the experiments as compared to experiments on...

We study the acceleration of electrons and protons interacting with localized, multiple, small-scale dissipation regions inside an evolving, turbulent active region. The dissipation regions are Unstable Current Sheets (UCS), and in their ensemble they form a complex, fractal, evolving network of acceleration centers. Acceleration and energy dissipation are thus assumed to be fragmented. A large-scale magnetic topology provides the connectivity between the UCS and determines in this way the...

We build on recent new evolutionary models of Jupiter and Saturn and here extend our calculations to investigate the evolution of extrasolar giant planets of mass 0.15 to 3.0 M_J. Our inhomogeneous thermal history models show that the possible phase separation of helium from liquid metallic hydrogen in the deep interiors of these planets can lead to luminosities ~2 times greater than have been predicted by homogeneous models. For our chosen phase diagram this phase separation will begin to...

I show that a spontaneous electric polarization is developed in the solution of the Falicov-Kimball model (FKM) by mapping the strong coupling limit of the model into an $xxz$ spin 1/2 model with a magnetic field. In this way, I can determine the phase diagram of the strongly interacting model that shows a transition to a mixed valence regime containing two phases: orbital ordering and Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons with a built in electric polarization. The results are extended to the...

Motivated by applications to quantum computer architectures we study the change in the exchange interaction between neighbouring phosphorus donor electrons in silicon due to the application of voltage biases to surface control electrodes. These voltage biases create electro-static fields within the crystal substrate, perturbing the states of the donor electrons and thus altering the strength of the exchange interaction between them. We find that control gates of this kind can be used to either...

We describe a class of algebraically solvable SUSY models by considering the deformation of invariant polynomial flags by means of the Darboux transformation. The algebraic deformations corresponding to the addition of a bound state to a shape-invariant potential are particularly interesting. The polynomial flags in question are indexed by a deformation parameter m=1,2,... and lead to new algebraically solvable models. We illustrate these ideas by considering deformations of the hyperbolic...

The Boolean algebra of regular closed sets is prominent in topology, particularly as a dual for the Stone-Cech compactification. This algebra is also central for the theory of geometric computation, as a representation for combinatorial operations on geometric sets. However, the issue of computational approximation introduces unresolved subtleties that do not occur within "pure" topology. One major effort towards reconciling this mathematical theory with computational practice is our...

The spectral width of the ionospheric backscatter echoes obtained with the SuperDARN radars has been regarded as a useful tool for locating specific ionospheric regions such as the cusp. In this paper we report the presence of ionospheric echoes with high (450 m/s) Doppler velocity and very low (60 m/s) spectral width, observed by the CUTLASS and Syowa East and South SuperDARN radars. These echoes have the following characteristics. (1) They have a close correlation with geomagnetic activity...

We consider five dimensional (5D) supersymmetric SO(10) compactified on the orbifold $S^1/(Z_2\times Z_2')$ such that the SO(10) gauge symmetry is broken on both fixed points (branes), and the residual gauge symmetry is $SU(3)_c\times SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y\times U(1)_X$. We explore one example in which the gauge symmetries on the two branes are respectively $SU(5)\times U(1)_X$ and $SU(4)_c\times SU(2)_L\times SU(2)_R$, and the MSSM gauge symmetry is recovered by the usual Higgs mechanism. In this work we propose two Lagrange multipliers with distinct coefficients for the light-front gauge that leads to the complete (non-reduced) propagator. This is accomplished via $(n\cdot A)^{2}+(\partial \cdot A)^{2}$ terms in the Lagrangian density. These lead to a well-defined and exact though Lorentz non invariant light front propagator.

Electromagnetic wavelets are constructed using scalar wavelets as superpotentials, together with an appropriate polarization. It is shown that oblate spheroidal antennas, which are ideal for their production and reception, can be made by deforming and merging two branch cuts. This determines a unique field on the interior of the spheroid which gives the boundary conditions for the surface charge-current density necessary to radiate the wavelets. These sources are computed, including the impulse...

We derive theoretical upper and lower bounds on the maximum size of DNA codes of length n with constant GC-content w and minimum Hamming distance d, both with and without the additional constraint that the minimum Hamming distance between any codeword and the reverse-complement of any codeword be at least d. We also explicitly construct codes that are larger than the best previously-published codes for many choices of the parameters n, d and w.

Deconstruction of 5D Yang-Mills gauge theories is studied in next-to-leading order accuracy. We calculate one-loop corrections to the mass spectrum of the non-linear gauged sigma-model, which is the low energy effective theory of the deconstructed theory. Renormalization is carried out following the standard procedure of effective field theories. The relation between the radius of the compactified fifth dimension and the symmetry breaking scale of the non-linear sigma-model is modified by...

In the present paper we construct differential invariants for generic rank 2 vector distributions on n-dimensional manifold. In the case n=5 (the first case containing functional parameters) E. Cartan found in 1910 the covariant fourth-order tensor invariant for such distributions, using his "reduction-prolongation" procedure. After Cartan's work the following questions remained open: first the geometric reason for existence of Cartan's tensor was not clear; secondly it was not clear...

We precisely measured pi^0 branching ratios of 5_Lambda-He and 12_Lambda-C hypernuclei produced via (pi^+,k^+) reaction. Using these pi^0 branching ratios with the pi^- branching ratios and the lifetimes, we obtained the pi^0 decay widths and the non-mesonic weak decay widths at high statistics with the accuracy of ~5 % (stat) for both hypernuclei.

We perform coherent manipulation of the SCB by using very fast DC pulses and observe quantum oscillations in time of the charge that persist to ~=10ns. The...

Our Milky Way Galaxy is a typical large spiral galaxy, representative of the most common morphological type in the local Universe. We can determine the properties of individual stars in unusual detail, and use the characteristics of the stellar populations of the Galaxy as templates in understanding more distant galaxies. The star formation history and merging history of the Galaxy is written in its stellar populations; these reveal that the Galaxy has evolved rather quietly over the last ~10...

We perform the investigations of the resonant tunneling via impurities embedded in the AlAs barrier of a single GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure. In the $I(V)$ characteristics measured at 30mK, the contribution of individual donors is resolved and the fingerprints of phonon assistance in the tunneling process are seen. The latter is confirmed by detailed analysis of the tunneling rates and the modeling of the resonant tunneling contribution to the current. Moreover, fluctuations of the local...

We have simulated numerically an automated version of Maxwell's demon inspired by Smoluchowski's ideas of 1912. Two gas chambers of equal volume are connected via an opening that is covered by a trapdoor. The trapdoor can open to the left but not to the right, and is intended to rectify naturally occurring fluctuations in density between the two chambers. Our results confirm that though the trapdoor behaves as a rectifier when large density differences are imposed by external means, it can not...

We investigate some aspects of the soliton dynamics in an alpha-helical protein macromolecule within the steric Davydov-Scott model. Our main objective is to elucidate the important role of the helical symmetry in the formation, stability and dynamical properties of Davydov's solitons in an alpha-helix. We show, analytically and numerically, that the corresponding system of nonlinear equations admits several types of stationary soliton solutions and that solitons which preserve helical symmetry...

We construct Witten-type string field theory vertices for a fermionic first order system with conformal weights (0,1) in the operator formulation using delta-function overlap conditions as well as the Neumann function method. The identity, the reflector and the interaction vertex are treated in detail paying attention to the zero mode conditions and the U(1) charge anomaly. The Neumann coefficients for the interaction vertex are shown to be intimately connected with the coefficients for bosons...
