We model the OH megamaser emission from the luminous infrared galaxy IIIZw35 as arising from a narrow rotating starburst ring of radius 22 pc enclosing a mass of 7 x 10^6 Msun. We show how both the compact and apparently diffuse maser emission from this ring can arise from a single phase of unsaturated maser clouds amplifying background radio continuum. The masing clouds are estimated to have a diameter of

In this paper we demonstrate how pulsating white dwarfs can be used as an astrophysical laboratory for empirically constraining convection in these stars. We do this using a technique for fitting observed non-sinusoidal light curves, which allows us to recover the thermal response timescale of the convection zone (its "depth") as well as how this timescale changes as a function of effective temperature. We also obtain constraints on mode identifications for the pulsation modes,...

We introduce a very deep, R_lim~27, multicolor imaging survey of very faint star-forming galaxies at z~4, z~3, z~2.2, and z~1.7. This survey, carried out on the Keck I telescope, uses the very same UGRI filter system that is employed by the Steidel team to select galaxies at these redshifts, and thus allows us to construct identically-selected, but much fainter, samples. However, our survey reaches ~1.5 mag deeper than the work of Steidel and his group, letting us probe substantially below the...

With the ongoing development of ocean circulation models and real-time observing systems, routine estimation of the synoptic state of the ocean is becoming feasible for practical and scientific purposes. The models can assist in ocean monitoring and regional dynamics studies, but only after they have been validated. For the first time, beginning 1 November 2004, independent ocean model estimates of the Florida Current (FC) volume transport are available, in real time, for cross validation with...

"Well, I was born in Orleans (the old one) in 1971, learned guitar at 15 but never was a hard worker, smoked at 17 and re-discovered the Beatles, Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix with my first psychedelic group: Wired. After we split, I made my own album where I could do whatever I wanted. This was Noises In My Head , recorded more than ten years ago. After two more bands were set up and split, I turned to the technical side of the music but I strongly think about making a second one." ...

We present results of numerical calculations of electronic states of an exciton and a trion in a CdTe quantum well at magnetic fields up to 150T. The exciton state and the trion states were computed using a variational procedure. We estimated the binding energy of the trion in a singlet state with the z-component of angular momentum L_z=0, as well as the binding energy of the trion in a triplet state with L_z=-1. Recent experimental results show that even up to 44T the binding energy of...

Galactic winds are the primary mechanism by which energy and metals are recycled in galaxies and are deposited into the intergalactic medium. New observations are revealing the ubiquity of this process, particularly at high redshift. We describe the physics behind these winds, discuss the observational evidence for them in nearby star-forming and active galaxies and in the high-redshift universe, and consider the implications of energetic winds for the formation and evolution of galaxies and...

Let $2^+S_4$ denote the double cover of $S_4$ corresponding to the element in $H^2(S_4,\Z/2\Z)$ where transpositions lift to elements of order 2 and the product of two disjoint transpositions to elements of order 4 (denoted $\tilde S_4$ in \cite{Serre}). Given an elliptic curve $E$, let $E[2]$ denote its 2-torsion points. Under some conditions on $E$ (as in \cite{Bayer}) elements in $H^1(\Gal_\Q,E[2])\backslash \{0 \}$ correspond to Galois extensions $N$ of $\Q$ with Galois group (isomorphic...

We present an object-oriented geophysical and astrophysical spectral-element adaptive refinement (GASpAR) code for application to turbulent flows. Like most spectral-element codes, GASpAR combines finite-element efficiency with spectral-method accuracy. It is also designed to be flexible enough for a range of geophysics and astrophysics applications where turbulence or other complex multiscale problems arise. For extensibility and flexibilty the code is designed in an object-oriented manner....

We have studied the precession mode, the rotational excitation built on the high-$K$ isomeric state, in comparison with the recently identified wobbling mode. The random-phase-approximation (RPA) formalism, which has been developed for the nuclear wobbling motion, is invoked and the precession phonon is obtained by the non-collective axially-symmetric limit of the formalism. The excitation energies and the electromagnetic properties of the precession bands in $^{178}$W are calculated, and it is...

Noise correlations, such as those observable in the time of flight images of a released cloud, are calculated for hard-core bosonic (HCB) atoms. We find that the standard mapping of HCB systems onto spin-1/2 XY models fails in application to computation of noise correlations. This is due to the contribution of multiply occupied virtual states to noise correlations in bosonic systems. Such states do not exist in spin models. We use these correlations to explore quantum coherence of the ground...

Within a special multi-coin quantum walk scheme we analyze the effect of the entanglement of the initial coin state. For states with a special entanglement structure it is shown that this entanglement can be meausured with the mean value of the walk, which depends on the i-concurrence of the initial coin state. Further on the entanglement evolution is investigated and it is shown that the symmetry of the probability distribution is reflected by the symmetry of the entanglement distribution.

We present a study of spin transport in charge and spin inhomogeneous semiconductor systems. In particular, we investigate the propagation of spin-polarized electrons through a boundary between two semiconductor regions with different doping concentrations. We use a theoretical and numerical method, presented in this paper, based on a self-consistent treatment of a two-component version of the Boltzmann transport equation. We show that space-charge effects strongly influence the spin transport...

We examine effects of encapsulated metal atoms inside a C$_{60}$ molecule on the activation energy barrier to the Stone-Wales transformation using {\it ab initio} calculations. The encapsulated metal atoms we study are K, Ca and La which nominally donate one, two and three electrons to the C$_{60}$ cage, respectively. We find that isomerization of the endohedral metallofullerene via the Stone-Wales transformation can occur more easily than that of the empty fullerene owing to the charge...

It is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally that the spin chirality associated with a noncoplanar spin configuration produces a magneto-optical effect. Numerical study of the two-band Hubbard model on a triangle cluster shows that the optical Hall conductivity $\sigma_{xy}(\omega)$ is proportional to the spin chirality. The detailed comparative experiments on pyrochlore-type molybdates $R_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ with $R=$Nd (Ising-like moments) and $R=$Gd (Heisenberg-like ones) clearly...

The energy associated with bosonic and fermionic pairs of topological spin defects in doped antiferromagnetic quantum spin-1/2 square lattice is estimated within a resonating valence bond scenario, as described by a t-t'-J-like model Hamiltonian, plus a t-perpendicular, responsible of a three-dimensional screening of the electrostatic repulsion within the bosonic pairs. For parameters appropriate for monolayered high-T_c superconductors, both fermionic and bosonic pairs show x^2-y^2 symmetry....

Recent developments in the physics of low density trapped gases make it worthwhile to verify old, well known results that, while plausible, were based on perturbation theory and assumptions about pseudopotentials. We use and extend recently developed techniques to give a rigorous derivation of the asymptotic formula for the ground state energy of a dilute gas of $N$ fermions interacting with a short-range, positive potential of scattering length $a$. For spin 1/2 fermions, this is $E \sim E^0 +...

A 1977 theorem of T. Harris states that an attractive spin system preserves the class of associated probability measures. We study analogues of this result for measures that satisfy various conditional positive correlations properties. In particular, we show that a spin system preserves measures satisfying the FKG lattice condition (essentially) if and only if distinct spins flip independently. The downward FKG property, which has been useful recently in the study of the contact process, lies...

We study metric-affine gravity (MAG) inspired cosmological models. Those models were statistically estimated using the SNIa data. We also use the cosmic microwave background observations and the big-bang nucleosynthesis analysis to constrain the density parameter $\Omega_{\psi,0}$ which is related to the non-Riemannian structure of the underlying spacetime. We argue that while the models are statistically admissible from the SNIa analysis, complementary stricter limits obtained from the CMB and...
