Numerous fires (marked with red dots) are burning in Eastern Europe, likely as a result of regional agricultural practices. The body of water at the lower left of this true-color MODIS image is the Sea of Azov. The Sea is bordered by Ukraine to the northwest, west and southwest and by Russia to the northeast, east, and southeast. Running along the far right of the image is the Volga River. Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date: 8/10/01.

Like many bodies of water throughout the world, including the North American Great Lakes, the Sea of Azov (right of center) has been facing problems related to eutrophication over the past decades. Eutrophication is the excessive influx of nutrients into waterways and wetlands most often caused by run-off polluted with fertilizers and other chemicals that spur the rapid growth of algae and plants, which die off and decompose, robbing oxygen from the water in the process. Often these blooms of...

On December 10, 2002, winter seemed to have already arrived in southern Ukraine (left) and Russia (right). The landscape is a dull brown, and dotted with small frozen lakes. The Dnieper River flowing into the Sea of Azov from upper left is beginning to freeze in sections, and the Sea itself is developing a covering of ice. The Sea has a gray-green cast, while the Black Sea to the south appears dark, clear blue. Sensor: Terra/MODIS. Data Start Date: 12/10/02. Data End Date: 12/10/02.

The Dnieper River flows south through the Ukraine into the northern end of the Black Sea, shown here in this true-color Aqua MODIS image from September 15, 2004. On either side of the river, red dots mark the locations of fires scattered throughout the country’s rich farmlands. The fires, some of which show smoke plumes drifting off in the atmosphere, are likely agricultural in nature, given the season, lack of tree-cover, and light smoke. Both the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov show swirls of...

The Russian tanker Volganeft-139 was anchored to the sea floor in the Kerch Strait linking the Black and Azov Seas when 108-kilometer- (67-mile-) per-hour winds tore the ship apart. As of November 12, up to 2,000 metric tons of fuel oil had leaked from the ship. On November 11, 2007, the day the storm struck, the...

A hazy plume drifted over the northern end of the Caspian Sea in early April 2008. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer modis.gsfc.nasa.gov (MODIS) on NASA's terra.nasa.gov Terra satellite took this picture on April 12, 2008. This image shows the plume curving over the water's surface. Underneath the plume, much of the water appears blue-green, thanks to the sea's shallow northern depths. This part of the Caspian Sea has an average depth of just 4 to 8 meters (13 to 26 feet)....

Scientists have observed similar blooms recurring annually, roughly this same time of year. The Sea of Azov, which is the smaller body of water located just north of the Black Sea in this image, also shows a high level of color variance.
