Twenty four strains of Aspergillus species isolated from paddy (Oryza sativa L.) of four districts of Telangana State, India were tested for their genetic variation by using ISSR markers. Out of 50 ISSR primers, 16 primers produced scorable and reproducible banding patterns. Sixteen primers produced 388 band positions (loci) and out of these loci 370 loci amplified were polymorphic. Majority of the primers which produced polymorphic bands were GA or AG repeats followed by AC or CA repeats....

The potential effects of climate change on the distribution of Mediterranean plants at their peripheral range make them extremely vulnerable to environmental fluctuations. The northern-most Italian population of Cistus albidus provides an outstanding case for study, as it grows at the extreme northern edge of its range and because phenological data have been available since the early XIX century. In the period 2012–2017, we analysed the population demography and spatial structure, growth and...

Pinus sylvestris (Scots pine) and taxa from the P. mugo (mountain pine) complex hybridize in contact zones producing morphologically-intermediate fertile hybrids. However, the hybrid specimens sometimes express only the P. sylvestris phenotype. Such cryptic hybrids were detected among P. sylvestris and P. uliginosa in the western part of Błędne Skały in the Stołowe Mountains, where the pines grow on the tops of sandstone rocks and phenotypically resemble P. sylvestris , P. uliginosa , and...

Climate change is threating species’ persistence worldwide. To predict species responses to climate change we need information not just on their environmental tolerance but also on its adaptive potential. We tested how the foundation species of rocky littoral habitats, Fucus vesiculosus, responds to combined hyposalinity and warming projected to the Baltic Sea by 2070–2099. We quantified responses of replicated populations originating from the entrance, central, and marginal Baltic regions....

The proposed studies are expected to (1) identify genetic variations in the genes of androgen transporters that are associated with the racial differences in prostate cancer aggressiveness; (2) identify key androgen transporters of which the expression and/or the alteration of expression in cancer relative to benign prostate tissue are associated with racial differences in prostate cancer aggressiveness. Progress in the reporting period includes: 1) Completion of genotyping for all 11 SLCO...

Ovarian, peritoneal and fallopian tube carcinomas (OC) are the most deadly of the gynecological cancers and can be considered together as one entity. While women with early stage OC have an excellent chance of cure, attempts to improve early detection have been largely ineffective. In contrast to surveillance, surgical prophylaxis with risk-reducing salpingo-oophorectomy (RRSO) reduces OC mortality in high risk women. Inherited mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 (BRCA1/2) account for about 15 percent...

A comprehensive understanding of source-sink dynamics can be critical for successfully managing at-risk species. We used field and modeling approaches to better understand the emergence and stability of sources and sinks and assess the implications of future system changes on population persistence. Modeling results identified the types of species and landscapes that are likely to exhibit strong source-sink dynamics and multi-species results indicated that management actions based on assumptions...

The project is designed to test whether genetic and/or tumor environmental heterogeneityis a driving force in progression of breast DCIS. Our project, a collaboration between Duke and ASU, has made substantial progress on all 4 aims and we met our 24 month milestones. Primary achievements for 24 months are: 1) Continued Case and control identification through extensive database and medical record searching at Duke, 2) Development of methods for isolating DNA from archival DCIS lesions, 3) Deep...

Individuals with germline mutations in BRCA1 have an elevated but incomplete risk of developing ovarian cancer suggesting the presence of genetic modifiers of ovarian cancer in this population. A genome wide association study(GWAS) for ovarian cancer in BRCA1 mutation carriers has identified several novel modifiers of ovarian cancer risk for BRCA1 mutation carriers that can be used for individualized ovarian cancer risk assessment.

The theory of evolution is a field of research in which many mathematical investigations have been made and in which many unsolved problems remain. Whatever one's opinions are about the ultimate causes of evolutionary progress (a still debatable problem), it is now clear that an overwhelming part in determining the direction of evolution is played by selection and mutation, and furthermore, that the only empirically testable theory of evolution that has at the present time any plausibility is...

The goal of this research proposal is to characterize the oncogenesis of prostate cancer and to more fully understand the relationship between clinically benign and aggressive disease. With help from my mentors I have identified four areas where I will focus my training during the completion of the proposed project: 1. To continue to acquire a comprehensive understanding of prostate cancer genomics. 2. To develop an understanding of evolutionary genomics and tumor evolution. 3. To develop...
