The California State University and Colleges (CSUC) system consists of 19 institutions located throughout the state. As a prerequisite for library automation an analysis and cost study of technical processing functions was undertaken in all 19 libraries of the system. The purpose of the study was to provide CSUC librarians with accurate cost figures for their own operations as well as a means of comparing costs based on a standardized methodology. The study was to facilitate comparisons among...

During the first year of operation, the committee concentrated on the quality of retrospective records input by member libraries, the need for OCLC to give high priority to deferred records, and the definition of a unique record. The establishment of an OCLC Advisory Committee on Cataloging was endorsed and opinions from SOLINET member libraries were solicited through SOLINET Memorandum 1975-32 and a...

The purpose of Cataloging in Publication (CIP) is to provide professional cataloging data to publishers so that the data will be printed in the book. Since CIP will reduce cataloging costs and speed the delivery of books to readers, it should be beneficial to both the library world and the publishing industry. The number of participating publishers has grown from 27 in July 1971 to 157. The goal of CIP is to provide Library of Congress Cataloging in Publication data at an annual rate of 30,000...

Outsourcing cataloging is becoming popular in the library profession, but a directory of cataloging agencies is still lacking. Only a few cataloging agencies are well-publicized, and it is hoped that this directory of 23 agencies will promote a competitive open market, thereby serving as a form of quality assurance. Cataloging services are divided into two sections: (1) cataloging agencies, which normally provide cataloging service based on shelflist cards or title pages, for which book...

There is a fairly large body of literature on the 1967 Anglo-American Cataloging Rules (AACR). Much of the adverse criticism which this literature contains is concerned with comparatively unimportant shortcomings of the code. This paper is a discussion of what the author considers to be some of the more serious defects. Several suggestions are made for improving the Code: (1) to avoid ambiguity, the rules in a catalog code must be based on a carefully controlled vocabulary; (2) a code should be...

The May 1971 issue of "College and Research Libraries" featured an article by Dr. Ellsworth Mason which constitutes an all-out attack on the application of computer technology to library systems. Dr. Mason views the computer-based technology to library systems developed to date (at least the ones he has studied) as unqualified disasters from a cost benefit point of view and librarians who have made the decisions to implement them as naive, incompetent and hypnotized by the siren songs...

During the Autumn of 1975, Northwestern Michigan University Library undertook a survey of the amount of time necessary for the Library of Congress to fill orders for sets of catalog cards. The time outstanding was recorded for over 2000 orders. Response time varied between five and fifty-five weeks. It was concluded that use of Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) tapes through a bibliographic network could significantly reduce this lag time. (EMH)

Since an alphabetically arranged newspaper clipping file often separates those items which should be together, a classified system would be more useful in a newspaper library.
