This series of animations shows a two-dimensional unstructured mesh particle-magnetohydrodynamic solar wind flow simulation of the interaction of the solar wind with the Earth's magnetosphere. Note: Magnetic field lines superimposed over density for a 2D simulation of the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction. Animator: Liam Krauss (Hughes STX), Andy Acuna (Hughes STX). Scientist: F. Kazeminezhad (NASA/GSFC), Steve Zalesak (NASA/GSFC), Dan Spicer (NASA/GSFC).

This series of animations compares a two-dimensional global hybrid simulation with an magnetohydrodynamic model of the interaction of the solar wind with the Earth's magnetosphere. Note: Magnetic field lines superimposed over density are compared for a 2D global hybrid simulation and a magnetohydrodynamic model of the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction. Topics: Hydrodynamics, Magnetohydrodynamics, Plasma (Ionized gases), Plasma stability
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the acceleration performance of a disk-shaped magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) accelerator and discuss its MHD acceleration effect. Quasi-1-dimensional (Q1D) numerical simulation employing the MacCormack scheme was developed. For shorter channel lengths, thermal loss can be reduced below 20 % owing to the smaller heat and the friction losses. However, too short channel length, accelerator performance was decreased by the MHD compression due to too large...
