This dissertation develops basic theory and applications of statistical multirate signal processing. Specific tools and terminology for describing multirate systems in the time and frequency domains are presented. An optimal multirate estimator is derived in both a direct form and recursive form. The Recursive form of the optimal estimator allows calculation of the relative change in performance when input signals are added or removed from the multirate system. The optimal multirate filtering...

A study of the leeside flow characteristics of the Shuttle Orbiter is presented for a reentry flight condition. The flow is computed using a point-implicit, finite-volume scheme known as the Langley Aerothermodynamic Upwind Relaxation Algorithm (LAURA). LAURA is a second-order accurate, laminar Navier-Stokes solver, incorporating finite-rate chemistry with a radiative equilibrium wall temperature distribution and finite-rate wall catalysis. The resulting computational solution is analyzed in...

During the earliest period of solar system formation, water played an important role in the evolution of primitive dust, both after accretion of planetesimals and possible before accretion within the protoplanetary disk. Many chondrites show evidence of variable degrees of aqueous alteration, the CM2 chondrites being among the most studied [1]. This group of chondrites is characterized by mineral assemblages of both primary and secondary alteration phases. Hence, these meteorites retain a...

Dust grains occur throughout the universe in many systems such as protostellar dust clouds, planetary ring structures and in a near earth environment as the result of man's activities. These grains interact with the local plasma and radiation environment and this interaction certainly influences the evolution of the dust grains. The interaction of bismuth dust particles were studied with a background plasma.

An approximate method was developed to analyze and predict the acoustics of a counterrotating propeller configuration. The method employs the analytical techniques of Lock and Theodorsen as described by Davidson to predict the steady performance of a counterrotating configuration. Then, a modification of the method of Lesieutre is used to predict the unsteady forces on the blades. Finally, the steady and unsteady loads are used in the numerical method of Succi to predict the unsteady acoustics...

The Zero-Gravity Quantity Gaging System program is a technology development effort funded by NASA-LeRC and contracted by NASA-JSC to develop and evaluate zero-gravity quantity gaging system concepts suitable for application to large, on-orbit cryogenic oxygen and hydrogen tankage. The contract effective date was 28 May 1985. During performance of the program, 18 potential quantity gaging approaches were investigated for their merit and suitability for gaging two-phase cryogenic oxygen and...

The preconceptual design of a Space Orbiting Advanced Fusion Power Reactor (SOAR), which delivers up to 1000 MWe for at least 600 s from an orbited mass of about 500 tonnes, was accomplished. The power is produced by a magnetically confined D-3He plasma. Approximately 96% of the fusion energy is in charged particles, and a direct converter has been designed which converts much of this energy into electricity at high net efficiency (about 80%). An advanced shield design allows SOAR to deliver...

Polyphenylquinoxalines are produced by an aromatic nucleophilic displacement reaction involving an activated aromatic dihalide with an appropriate quinoxaline monomer. Polyphenylquinoxalines are high temperature thermoplastics used as adhesives, coatings, films and composite matrices. The novelty of this invention is threefold: (1) some of the quinoxaline monomers are new compositions of matter; (2) the phenylquinoxaline polymers which are the end products of the invention are new compositions...

A theory of solid state fusion is presented based on the formation of a D(+) bosonic Bloch condensate within a metal deuteride. The first step towards fusion is a coalescence reaction which converts a 4-fold occupation state of zero point motion size into a state of nuclear dimensions. Reaction rates for the coalescence reaction are calculated using the Fermi Golden Rule. (JHD)

Muon catalyzed fusion is a process in which a negatively charged muon combines with two nuclei of isotopes of hydrogen, e.g, a proton and a deuteron or a deuteron and a triton, to form a muonic molecular ion in which the binding is so tight that nuclear fusion occurs. The muon is normally released after fusion has taken place and so can catalyze further fusions. As the muon has a mean lifetime of 2.2 microseconds, this is the maximum period over which a muon can participate in this process....

The article explains how it is possible for deuterons separated by macroscopic distances to interact in a nuclear fashion through the formation of a Bose Bloch Condensate (BBC) within a solid. Under suitable conditions, the formation of a BBC may lead to nuclear fusion and a variety of heretofore unobserved nuclear processes. The application of these ideas is used to explain the anomalous heating of Pd through the electrolysis of D2O and LiOD and conclude that only a small concentration of BBC...

Nuclear fusion appears to be the most promising concept for producing extremely high specific impulse rocket engines. One particular fusion concept which seems to be particularly well suited for fusion propulsion applications is the gasdynamic mirror (GDM). An experimental GDM device has been constructed at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center to provide an initial assessment of the feasibility of this type of propulsion system. An initial shakedown of the device is currently underway with...

A possible history of the production of elements in the galaxy is presented, based on assumptions about the end points of stellar evolution and of the general evolution of the galaxy. A wide range of quantities involving the relative abundances of nucleosynthesis products observed in the solar system, and various galactic quantities such as the current rate of supernova production and the present gas content of the galaxy, were considered. These assumptions were utilized in a computer program...
