Biodiversity of insects is threatened worldwide. Here, we present a comprehensive review of 73 historical reports of insect declines from across the globe, and systematically assess the underlying drivers. Our work reveals dramatic rates of decline that may lead to the extinction of 40% of the world's insect species over the next few decades. In terrestrial ecosystems, Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera and dung beetles (Coleoptera) appear to be the taxa most affected, whereas four major aquatic taxa...

Hello and thanks for stopping by. We are the Pollinators. We are a rock and roll band. We play around the San Francisco Bay Area. We still have our day jobs. The PollinatorsPhilip Swett on guitar, Matt Potter on bass, Dave Stockett on guitar, Greg Barnes on drumshave been making original rock music together for several years now. Our sound comes from a bunch of different sources: from the L.A. punk scene of the early 80's to the anthem guitar rock of the seventies; from the stripped-down...

Using a non-replicated plot design, we experimentally assessed the effects of a locally produced biological pesticide on the abundance, species richness and Shannon diversity of beneficial insects in four forage crops (alfalfa, soybeans, corn, and triticale) in southeastern Kazakhstan. 2-way ANOV tests detected no effect of the biological pesticide treatment on the abundance (N) of either predators or pollinators. However, there were significant differences in pollinator and predator abundances...

On the 22nd of June, beekeepers, organic farmers, and pro-Earth actvists parked a truck carrying the bodies of 2.8 million dead bees in front of the offices of the EPA. The dead bees were from 75 hives destroyed by pesticides sold by corporations like Bayer and Monsanto. On the grass between the truck and the Environmental Protection Agency's offices, speaker after speaker warned that no bees means no food. A third of all food produced in the US is either pollinated by bees or in the case of...

Bumblebee populations have been in sharp decline for several years, threatening the production of a wide range of fruits, vegetables and nuts. Now a new study has shown a clear link between climate change and the loss of bumblebees and other important pollinators. Peter Soroye is a PhD student in the department of biology at the University of Ottawa. He is the lead author of the study, published this month in the journal Science.

Why should we be aiming to increase biodiversity on our farms? What role do pollinators play in improving our crops and the land that we as grain farmers manage? Our host, Scott Beaton, talks to native seed specialist Stephanie Frischie from the Xerces Society and farmer Allison Squires about why we should be thinking about biodiversity, and how we can start to go about doing it. Mike Killewald from the University of Manitoba tells us about the four-year pollinator project he's working on with...

We cannot survive without pollinators. An astonishing 80% of the world's plant species require a pollinator to reproduce: plants that not only feed and shelter us, but are absolutely essential within Earth's ecosystems. This relationship between flora and fauna is being challenged on all sides by habitat loss, pesticides, invasive species, and more. Come together with the experts at this year's Green Matters to learn what you can do- at work or at home- to protect our pollinators! Green...
