It would be a fair argument to say that there is perhaps no invention that has had as much impact on the world as that of the Internet. The internet, however, was conceived in the minds of government employees. Just as Government influenced the development of the internet, the same can be said of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Technology. The DoD had a very large impact on the development of RFID. Many DoD funded projects and experiments helped pave the way for and significantly...

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a technological advance that has caught the attention of many people. Hailed by some for its ability to overshadow the present day barcode as well as track objects, RFID technology is also ridiculed by many others for reasons that include very little security, minimal privacy, and ethical and legal issues. While RFID has the potential to change the way we interact with items on a day-to-day basis, without proper attention, regulation, and security, this...

One of the main problems that affect the data integrity of passive RFID systems is the collision between the tags. A popular anticollision algorithm which dominates the standards in HF and UHF passive RFID systems is Framed Slotted Aloha (FSA) and some variations of FSA. Throughput and Average time delay of the RFID system which determines the performance/efficiency of the system are reduced rapidly when the number of tags inside the interrogation zone is increased. Using larger frame sizes is...

This MBA Professional Report proves the feasibility of using aircraft mounted RFID antennas to detect commercially available Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags affixed to small vessels. The project was conducted because monitoring small vessels in U.S. coastal and inland waters is considered a gap in homeland security, as well as problematic for marine resource managers tasked with enforcing sanctuary and fishing regulations. The premises of the project are that 1) RFID tags are less...

This thesis analyzes the feasibility, efficiency and usability of patient tracking systems in support of military and Humanitarian Assistance/Disaster Relief (HA/DR) operations by reviewing the implications for implementing a medical technology into the field. The initial focus of this research is on determining the need for such a system. Research was conducted that discusses the strengths and weaknesses of each of the currently available systems. This will be followed by combining the...

The purpose of this MBA Project was to identify and explore logistical frameworks that leverage technology to overcome problems associated with coordinated logistics operations during crisis management. Over the past ten years, there have been significant advances in RFID, satellite and other related asset visibility technologies. These advances are mature enough to significantly increase the probability of achieving a useful common operational picture during emergency response activities....

The purpose of this MBA project is to identify the existing and potential value of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) use in the operations of Headquarters Air Mobility Command (HQAMC) and its worldwide network of aerial ports. The project seeks to determine how the applications of RFID within AMC can add value to AMC's operations and the operations of other DoD supply chain members. In doing so, the project describes the technical attributes of DoD's RFID tags and infrastructure, AMC's...

On a day-to-day basis, security to most Americans means proving their identity by producing a valid government-issued identification document (ID)most commonly a drivers license. For this reason, terrorists on September 11, 2001, (9/11) placed high value on drivers licenses as a mean to mask preparatory activities leading up to their attack. Congress, as a result, enacted several measures, culminating in the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), adopted June 1, 2009. The WHTI requires...

Have you ever attended an RFID hacking presentation and walked away with more questions than answers? This talk will finally provide practical guidance for penetration testers on hacking High Frequency (HF - 13.56 MHz) and Ultra-High Frequency (UHF – 840-960 MHz). This includes Near Field Communication (NFC), which also operates at 13.56 MHz and can be found in things like mobile payment technologies, e.g., Apple Pay and Google Wallet. We'll also be releasing a slew of new and free RFID...

With insecure low frequency RFID access control badges still in use at businesses around the world and high frequency NFC technology being incorporated into far more consumer products, RFID hacking tools are invaluable for penetration testers and security researchers alike. Software defined radio has revolutionized this field with powerful devices like Proxmark3 and RFIDler available for a modest price. 3D printing has also presented new opportunities for makers to create custom antennas and...

Comparison testing and validation of the Zebra and Catapult tracking systems against a Gold Standard on-field measurement system for human physiological performance monitoring. Data shows that the accuracy of the Zebra (RFID-based) system is very good, due to its high sampling frequency, with most measurements being within 2 for distance and 4 for velocity as compared to our standard method. However, the GPS-based Catapult system exceeded 4 error for distance measurements.

Passive RFID tags are attractive for their low cost, small footprint, and ability to function without batteries. The lack of onboard power, however, limits the complexity of operations that can be performed by the tags' integrated circuits, and this limitation prevents the tags from being able to perform typical functions required to support e-authentication. This thesis quantifies the delta between the power that would be required to perform MAC-based authentication, and the power made...

This study examines the possibility of the existence of a Second Chasm in the DoD's Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Unique Identification (UID) adoption. The study focuses on the DoD's small business partner's willingness to conform to the RFID-UID mandates and their reasons why. The compliance information was collected through anonymous surveys of DoD small business suppliers. The study then discusses the results of the survey and the relevance of the data to the DoD, and concludes...

We explore whether benefits are being realized in RFID initiatives that are not being captured by traditional Return on Investment analysis. Utilizing the Naval Supply System Report, which found RFID technology does not create a positive ROI, we surveyed the participants to find benefits they received that were not addressed. 100% of the participants reported increased customer knowledge and increased timeliness of information. While this finding may not be enough to support the implementation...

Locating and securing an Alzheimer's patient who is outdoors and in wandering is crucial to an Alzheimer patient safety. Although advances in geo tracking and mobile technology have made locating patients instantly possible, reaching them while in wandering state may take time. However, a social network of caregivers may help shorten the time that it takes to reach and secure a wandering AD patient. This study proposes a new type of intervention based on novel mobile application architecture to...

Recently, Radio frequency identification (RFID) has been an important and ubiquitous infrastructure technology for smart work system. As RFID tags are affixed to all items, they may be used to support various useful services. Security mechanisms for RFID systems, such as authentication and encryption, are therefore of utmost importance. However, there are many risks involved, for example user privacy violations and service interference. Therefore, security service is required to block these...

This paper introduces a Near Field Communication (NFC) supported school attendance supervision system for school children. Traditionally, teachers conduct students attendance monitoring every time with manual roll calls, and mark absences and thenenter in the backend system. This requires time and effort on every school day. In addition, children beginning school/college travel to school/college independently, either on foot, by motorcycle, or by bus. Therefore, parents of young students...
