Topics: Protons -- Scattering, Nuclear reactions, Scattering (Physics)
The cross sections for the elastic scattering of electrons from atomic oxygen are calculated in the energy range between 0 and 13.6 electron volts. Polarization of the atom is included by using a term in the potential function which has the correct asymptotic behavior and which vanishes at the origin. Previous theoretical and experimental results are discussed.

Inversion techniques are used to infer bottom sedimentary characteristics using AN/SQS-53C Reverberation Level (RL) data gathered during Exercise LWAD 99-1. Analysis was conducted to determine the correlation between sediment type and beam RL time series statistics, including slope and detrended higher order statistics (standard deviation, skew, and kurtosis). A geographic contour plot of the spatial distribution of sediments was generated from the deviation of the RL slope of individual...

This paper presents an artificial intelligence monitoring system developed by the NASA Glenn Principal Investigator Microgravity Services project to help the principal investigator teams identify the primary vibratory disturbance sources that are active, at any moment in time, on-board the International Space Station, which might impact the microgravity environment their experiments are exposed to. From the Principal Investigator Microgravity Services' web site, the principal investigator teams...

The Harris expansion method is applied to the elastic s-wave scattering of low energy electrons from hydrogen atoms and singly ionized helium atoms. The trial wave functions are Hylleraas functions of 22, 34, 50 and 70 parameters. It is found that reasonably accurate values of e-H phase shifts can be calculated but that e-He phase shifts are substantially less reliable. It is shown that the Harris method gives an accurate depiction of the location, but not the width, of the scattering...

In time-distance helioseismology, the travel time of acoustic waves is measured between various points on the solar surface. To some approximation, the waves can be considered to follow ray paths that depend only on a mean solar model, with the curvature of the ray paths being caused by the increasing sound speed with depth below the surface. The travel time is effected by various inhomogeneities along the ray path, including flows, temperature inhomogeneities, and magnetic fields. By measuring...

This thesis describes the performance enhancement of the NPS Transient Electromagnetic Scattering Laboratory (TESL) accomplished by replacing the old HP 8349A microwave preamplifier of the dual amplifier configuration with a new Avantek 13533 5-13 GHz amplifier and optimizing the delay line length for the 1-6 GHz amplifier. New Matlab software was developed to process the signals scattered from canonical and complex targets. This software includes a program to calculate the correct delay line...
