Steve’s dream of becoming a vocalist began at a very young age as he was sifting through his mother’s 78 RPM records. She had quite a varied collection of talented vocalists, but it was soon clear that Steve’s favorite was Frank Sinatra. To Steve, Sinatra was the ultimate storyteller. He communicated the essence of life to each individual listener like no singer had done before. Today, Steve retells the stories that Sinatra explored, conjuring the essence of the great master of the...

Willie Dixon Jr. has been spinning jazz records on the air for more than 25 years and has been a volunteer jazz host on WKCC since 2007. He heard his first jazz recording in 1946 - Lionel Hampton - broadcast from a sound truck that was driving through his South Chicago neighborhood. He’s been a jazz fan ever since. Listen to In a Mellow Tone and, Dixon says, you will take a step back in time with artists including Nat Cole, Sarah Vaughn, Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra.

Witchpolice Radio episode #299 with guests Lounge FM http://www.witchpolice.com http://witchpolice.podiant.co Lounge FM 's Love Will Let You Down is one of the coolest local records of the year -- a slow-burning, psychedelic blend of R&B, jazz, soul and more. We sat down with three members of the group to talk about their rural roots, finding a place in Winnipeg's scene for their "Friday night bath music", and much more. Thanks to everyone who has supported the podcast thus...

Witchpolice Radio episode #270 with guest Chuck Copenace A conversation with jazz trumpeter Chuck Copenace in a busy mall food court (so forgive some of the background sounds). Chuck has been making a name for himself in the local community for his groove-heavy instrumental sounds as well as his outreach to indigenous youth in Manitoba. He's also headed to a jazz festival in Guatemala to bring his music to an entirely new audience, but before he goes, he's playing a set this Friday at...

Witchpolice Radio episode #305: Chenoa McKelvey and Jacob Letkeman at Mom's House As many of you are likely aware, I've been guest-hosting a (video) show about local musicians from time to time. It's called ' Mom's House ', and it's the brainchild of a group of up-and-coming Manitoba filmmakers called Young Media. We decided to use the interview portions of the episodes I host and release them in audio form as bonus podcasts! This first Witchpolice at Mom's House episode features a great...

SPECIAL EVENT: POEMJAZZ WITH ROBERT PINSKY AT THE TOWN HALL THEATER Robert Pinsky will be performing PoemJazz with his trio of musicians. “In jazz, as in poetry,” says 3-time US Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky, “there is always that play between what’s regular and what’s wild. That has always appealed to me.” Pinsky’s innovative dialogue between poetry and music, PoemJazz intertwines language and instrument, emphasizing the physical and melodic qualities of voice, as well as the way...
