A festival show, this time at the famous Montreux Jazz Festival, during the European tour for Up . It's a nice audience recording that gets a little overdriven in patches, but the setlist is wonderful - including two Murmur songs and Michael stumbling his way through Sinéad O’Connor's 'Black Boys on Mopeds' to open the encore. Track listing: Lotus [cuts in] What's the Frequency, Kenneth? Suspicion Pilgrimage So Fast, So Numb Perfect Circle Daysleeper Fall on Me Electrolite The Apologist...

The first show of R.E.M.'s 2003 tour for their In Time best of, playing at a small Dutch venue as a warmup for a festival show in England a week later. It's a nice recording, and the two hour setlist is amazing - only half of the set actually comes from the greatest hits album, with the rest being older songs and deep cuts in a starstudded setlist; complete with Linda Hopper singing one of her Magnapop songs! First show with Bill Rieflin on drums. Track listing: Begin the Begin Animal [live...

Possibly the weirdest place for a band to perform, Hardee's is a fast food restaurant at the State University of New Jersey that somehow found itself host to an R.E.M. show on the Murmur tour. A recently surfaced second source helped make the sound of this show a lot better (although some bits are patched in from the bad-sounding original recording), and it's a very nice show with almost all of the early material in place. Track listing: [intro] Moral Kiosk Catapult Letter Never Sent Shaking...

A muffled cassette recording from the Murmur tour, but it's a very nice 90-minute show. The band (including Michael performing with an eyepatch!) play through a strong setlist with most of the highlights of Murmur and the next year's Reckoning , plus almost all of Chronic Town and a few other B-sides and covers. Nothing particularly rare, but a great closing number. Track listing: Moral Kiosk Catapult Letter Never Sent Pilgrimage 7 Chinese Bros. Talk About the Passion So. Central Rain...

R.E.M.'s return to Brisbane, a city they mentioned in song (although not one they play tonight, and Michael mentions that in the encore), for the first time in ten years. Reasonably good recording, nice setlist featuring tour rarities 'Driver 8' and 'Strange Currencies' (the latter dedicated to Michael Hutchence), and Michael talking about splitting his underpants on stage. R.E.M.'s first Providence show that isn't at the Living Room (and Michael notes this during the set), a frenetic show on the Reckoning tour that includes all but one of that album's songs ('Camera' as a rarity!) as well as a pile of others - an early version of the then-unreleased 'Kohoutek' is another gem. Great audio recording, although it doesn't quite capture Michael's quiet take of 'Moon River' before he storms off in a rage. Track listing: Radio Free Europe [cuts in] Harborcoat...

One from very early R.E.M., this coming at you from the pre- Murmur days on the tour for Chronic Town . It's a great recording, recently upgraded, and features twelve songs from the first EP and album; alongside Beach Boys covers with Peter Holsapple. Plus an interview with Buck, Mills, and Holsapple for a nearby radio station, complete with a story about the band's name's meanings. A newly-surfaced recording of a late-stage Fables show, there are definitely better (and more complete) recordings of R.E.M. from this time but this show is a great one. The setlist gets arranged somewhat interestingly, it ends with an eclectic mix of covers, and the two Lifes Rich Pageant songs performed include the live debut of 'Swan Swan H'. A newly surfaced second source of the first Italian show on the Monster tour, there's a lot of DAT hiss but it's a very nice recording apart from that. Michael banters with the audience in Italian a lot, playing a few pranks; the set features eleven Monster songs (including a rare 'King of Comedy') and 'Disturbance at the Heron House', and doesn't end the main set with 'Star 69'. The final show of the Reckoning tour sees R.E.M. play in Norway for the first time, a strong show with lots of adventure and plenty of songs looking ahead to Fables of the Reconstruction in the set. Two sources are available, a near-complete AUD (missing 'Carnival of Sorts' at the end of the show) and a vastly superior FM broadcast. The Green tour bought R.E.M. to Italy for the first time, the introduction to a country they would find success and fame in (playing there thirty six more times over the next two decades). This recently surfaced bootleg is a good upgrade of the best tape, a nice recording (although with some loud crowd noise) of a great performance in Milan - Michael plays with the crowd by making the same speech three times. Returning to Berlin a month after their last show there, and despite some issues with Michael's voice (he's being very raspy) it's a good show. A very cool setlist from the 2005 summer tour, performing near Dublin. Three songs in the middle of the set are dedicated to Burmese political prisoner Aung San Suu Kyi on her birthday, but they throw in many other rare gems - 'Leave', 'Disturbance at the Heron House', 'Find the River', 'World Leader Pretend', 'Sitting Still', a 'Moon River' cover with Mike on vocals, and a one-line Leonard Cohen tease! Average recording. Track listing: Bad Day What’s the Frequency, Kenneth? The One I Love...

A recently revised version of the second-last show on the North American Reconstruction tour, taking in a newly-surfaced Ferro tape and filling it out with a secondary source (itself taken as filler on another Ferro tape). One of R.E.M.'s last appearances at the Pier, a small Raleigh venue that served them well in the early days; this is also one of the best recordings from the pre- Murmur era of the band, running through the vast majority of the songs they had at the time before asking the audience to help pick songs they couldn't play. Two different sources of a university show in the later months of the Reckoning tour. A show that squeezes a lot of songs into its running time, the first tape is higher quality but misses the second and third encores, while the second is near-complete (misses the first song and a half, and a little bit of 'Windout') but lower quality. Great bouncy show with almost every song from Reckoning (only 'Letter Never Sent' is absent), four then-new songs from Fables and Pageant , and the...

Unlike the previous night , there were no power failures for R.E.M. during an Italian show early in the Monster tour. A famous show from the Monster tour, and one that only recently surfaced - the show is impacted by not just one, but two power failures that cause some nuisance during the show. It's an average recording (although apparently the venue acoustics are abysmal), but it's a neat setlist from the early and sadly aborted first European leg, and we get to see Michael trying for an Italian accent all through the show. After urging everyone, at both performances on the weekend, to show up to the protest march on Monday, Thom Yorke made good on his word, performing 'Street Spirit (Fade Out)' to an audience gathered there. Two sources of it are present - a cassette recording which also features R.E.M. playing 'Losing My Religion' and speeches from Adam Yauch and Sean Lennon, and the C-SPAN audio feed of just Thom.

The advantage of performing at a huge stadium for an event like the Tibetan Freedom Concert is that there's often a proshot available (although unfortunately not for R.E.M.). Shortly after the release of the single "What's The Frequency, Kenneth?", R.E.M. were joined by Dan Rather in Burbank to (try to) teach him how to sing the song he inspired. This was likely part of b-roll footage recorded for an evening news broadcast. The date on the VHS label is 09/08/1995, but R.E.M. had a show in St. Petersburg the evening of September 8, and played a show in Ramat Gan, Israel on August 9, so it's unclear what the date refers to. The last night of the Philadelphia run, and the one with the weakest tape of the three - the video source from the same taper doesn't have a widely available DVD (although it is on YouTube and I've sent an email to chase it up EDIT 2022-02-04: the taper offered to send a raw .avi, but if we paid him $20, which isn't worth it).
